Rick and Morty is an American adult animated science fiction sitcom created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon for Cartoon Network's late-night programming block Adult Swim. Creating work for its own sake is the stupidest thing I ever head of. Nobody needs a job. People need money, resources to live. Ricks could automate everything and give everyone a UBI.
The writers made it like this to reflect our society.

Ricks hate themselves and many of them hate how isolated they feel from the rest of the universe because of how smart they are. Ricks can't just turn off their brains and enjoy being average, they aren't normal. So they create this pretend society where they can be menial, a form of self-abuse. MC Rick though is too smart even for that, he sees the citadel as just a way to pretend to be average, and wants no part of it, because he's too smart to dumb himself down.

The 'evil Rick' he was controlling showed Rick images of Baby Morty, that made him cry.
Now that doesn't line up with Rick abandoning the family after Summer was born.
So I'm thinking there was a timeline where he had a bigger part in raising evil Morty, it went wrong, and he hopped on to join current Morty.
However the original Evil Morty got hold of a portal gun and started plotting taking over everything (and possibly revenge).

I just didn't anticipate his end goal of scanning Rick's brain. Nobody did.
@@CarpeVeracity No part of the finale implied that evil morty had any connection to rick C-137. It made it clear that he has no connection to him. He only ever focused on our rick because he was the creator of the citadel and was one of the only ricks that knew how to escape the curve.

Why would a Rick agree to joining the citadel and never seeing their family again?

There's several reasons why the Ricks join the citadel and live how they do. The first is they hate themselves and putting themselves through this is a form of self torment, and second is every Rick comes from a universe where they're the smartest person they're lonely not a single person can even begin to approach their intelligence. And being a part of the Citadel is a form of average normalcy. They're surrounded by only the smartest person in the Central Finite Curve and live the "normal" life that they couldn't have with all the in comparison to Rick stupid people. There's also the reason that virtually none of the Ricks care about anyone else let alone their family, all Ricks abandon their family for the opportunity to explore the universe and multiverse. Rick C-137 is one of the very very few Ricks that actually cared about their family and choose to not abandon them. But became the person he is because he lost his family. All of the other Ricks either don't care about their family, want to be surrounded by other Ricks, hate themselves, are trying to escape the government, and more.
Best episode, change my mind.

President Morty didn't need to divide the Ricks and the Morties. He just needed to unite some of them to get what he wanted. And what better method of forging unity than through the ones who the society has abandoned and treated like trash.
He wants to give the Ricks what he thinks they deserve and he appealed to enough of them alongside all of the Morties so he can start giving it to them.
