Hey Chris. Thanks again for the class professor. Much appreciated. Rockclimbed alot and can attest to ropes needing lots of care. Keep them clean, don't step on them, tell them you love them... Peace

Thanks a lot! I am on the market for my first boat. This is really helpful insight. On top we might add checking for soft spots on deck and check of hull for osmoses as basics.

Could you do a program on engine life, diesel v gasoline? Also the recommended engine size for various size boats?

Buy a low-cost boat and fix it yourself. They are low cost because lazy people don’t want to fix them.
“But I don’t want to spend months in a boat yard.”
Sailing a boat that you have restored yourself gives you a deep sense of fulfillment. That feeling is gold.
Comfort breeds boredom and it makes you lazy and fat. Consequently it does not fulfill its purpose.
It just breads a different kind of pain that will cost you money and take up your time in the long run.
Seek Discomfort for a richer life.

5k is where it's start for standing rigging. It goes up with the length of your vessel. 10k and up is more realistic.

Should you get a boat after 1990,2000,2005? Really stuck on this dilemma. Want to save money on the long term, by not having to shoehorn refitting and repairs constantly. Also thank you for your videos and all the amazing information, you also scare me when you get aggressive ❤️

Don't lay off the need to replace standing rigging to the insurance companies, they are all different. Also, what about chain plates? Replacing the wire is one thing, knowing your chain plates are good is another. 10-15 years is my max, as a surveyor.

Excellent video! Just out of curiosity, if you don't quite trust the seller's claim on the age of the sails, is there a way to tell how far into the lifespan the sails really are? I mean, if it is your own boat, you have a frame of reference but going in cold, you can't really judge their performance. (?)

I can tell you , they usually want to balk at it however when break it down in simple terms as explained in this video they can't get upset, its just factual information, they can decline offer and hold out, counter or cry, makes zero difference, there are hundreds of thousands of vessels for sale all over at any given point. The trick is don't fall in love with a vessel you don't own

Never been asked by my insurance company the age of my standing rigging. Neither have any of my sailing buddies. 2 years on a set of sails? C'mon man. If you take care of your gear, it can last almost indefinitely.

@ABC gang Current boat is a Cal 34-3, insured through Progressive. Guess I should ask what boat you are sailing to be fair? Perhaps there are different requirements for comprehensive coverage vs only liability, but since my boat is paid for I only carry liability. Same goes for my buddies on their Ranger, Gulf's, Catalina, etc boats.
Seriously dude, I'm still running some 40-45 year old sails without any sailtape or patches, and still race when I can get off work.
