Wooden Ships - Crosby Stills Nash and Young

- Wooden Ships is a famous song by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. It was on their album So Far, and was one of their greatest hits. The lyrics are as follows:
Stills: If you smile at me, I will understand
'Cause that is something everybody everywhere does
in the same language.
Crosby: I can see by your coat, my friend,
you're from the other side,
There's just one thing I got to know,
Can you tell me please, who won?
Stills: Say, can I have some of your purple berries?
Crosby: Yes, I've been eating them for six or seven weeks now,
haven't got sick once.
Stills: Probably keep us both alive.
Wooden ships on the water, very free and easy,
Easy, you know the way it's supposed to be,
Silver people on the shoreline, let us be,
Talkin' 'bout very free and easy...
Horror grips us as we watch you die,
All we can do is echo your anguished cries,
Stare as all human feelings die,
We are leaving - you don't need us.
Go, take your sister then, by the hand,
lead her away from this foreign land,
Far away, where we might laugh again,
We are leaving - you don't need us.
And it's a fair wind, blowin' warm,
Out of the south over my shoulder,
Guess I'll set a course and go... - Hudba

Just heard the passing of David Crosby. As a young black man who grew up with Motown, so glad I had opened minded friends who also dug CSNY,Zeppelin, The Stones, Yes, Pink Floyd and great 70's bands. Turning 72 this weekend. Rock on!
Rip in peace cosby. My husband was a great fan. CSNY gave him so much joy!! He passed away last year. Hope they meet somewhere now. From Mauritius.
Thank you !! Rock on!On!! I'm walking into studio now !!

You made the world a better place.🙏🏼❤️

The world truly lost a bright light. Yep, he was outspoken, opinionated, gave zero f**ks, but damn I loved him. That impish smile was everything.
His songs & voice defined an entire generation.

Sad, came here to listen to my favorite of theirs
@@childcarelounge4590 Same here. I had to listen to this after I heard the news.
He’s the one who flew his ‘freak flag’ whenever he felt like it, and I loved that about him. Think it was the Acoustic Tour in the 80’s, he spoke out… said they were right about most things, The War, Nixon, Ohio & Kent St. Then he said the thing he got wrong was the drugs. RIP
Amen! He so did
2023, 71 years old, still rockin' this tune Steven!!
76 years old and this takes me back over 50 years to a time when all things were possible. Such a great timeless song.

We actually believed we would change the world. It was a great time to be young.
@@nbenefiel Indeed it was and time passes so quickly.
@@nbenefiel We did change it, in so many ways. Unfortunately, younger people are mad at us for things we had not much control over.
I’m so glad I lived through this era, these musicians with their innovative and imaginative songs are so far ahead of the rubbish they churn out now it’s sad how far we have not progressed. Long live this era.
I just learned of the passing of David Crosby this afternoon.....He was one of the very best guitarists, singer , songwriters to ever grace a stage....From The Byrds to Crosby, Stills , Nash and Young ... He will be forever missed and remembered....😞🎤🎸🔥💪👊🙏
Memory eternal,, oh our brother.
I'm 66 yo and no musician, couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, but I recognize good music when I hear it. This is good music.
You nailed it 👏
I was born in 1968. I wish I was an adult at that time. I would have traveled to the West coast to live fully the atmosphere of joy, love, depth you can still feel listening to this fabulous song now, in 2024. I apologize for my English
Your English is fine, Valerie!!!
I was born in ‘48 and went to Cali in ‘68. It was magic - and that magic is still alive when I listen to this again. Enjoy!😊
One of my all time favorite bands.
RIP David Crosby ❤️
“If you smile at me I will understand cause it’s something everybody everywhere does in the same language.” How perfect is this?!?!?
Although it's the first verse of the song, it's my favorite verse of the song & how I'll always remember it. 👍
I already left a comment. How many comment's do I need to leave for Christ sake.
Met David Crosby and his new wife Jan in ' 87 ' .
They were very gracious and invited myself and girlfriend to their table.
I told him " I played ""Wooden Ships "" last night on my guitar."
He said " Man! Nobody plays that song anymore! "
Almost 35 years later from that night...
Yes.
We do.
😔
I will never get tired of the music of this era.Born with it and will die with it.
I hear ya
Feel the same
AMEN to that
Heard them playing this, probably for first time at a large gathering at Esalen, just above the Pacific Ocean...speakers weren't connecting...then BOOM...unforgetable..(can still hear that...incredible sound...)
Amen!
All these many years later, "Wooden Ships" can still give me the chills to hear. A deep sense of unspoken fear that an entire generation lived with, and this song put into lyrics.
Clarity here yes, it is
Well said.
Unfortunately, Still lives with.
Brother the fear is still alive, and more threatening than ever.
Chills and memories of my youth. RIP David Crosby
I started listening to this album when I was a little bitty 6 year old. Its gold!!
I too am an old hippy who first saw this amazing band at Woodstock in 1969, I was 15 years old (I will let you do the math.)
Last week I visited Nashville, TN. I was fortunate enough to see Graham Nash at the Country Music Auditorium! He was wonderfully right on target with every CSNY song he sang. He also shared intimate stories of the experiences he had from being in the band The Hollys. He is 80 years young. It was another highlight of my life. Thank you so much for over 50 years of magical music.

Hi Norma and all,
As a white woman of 71 I so agree with your comments ! Kept waking up frequently last night with opening lines of Wooden Ships replaying in my head. My daughter frequently tells me how lucky I am to have been born a "" child of the 60s" and she is right!!! Keep on listening !

Farewell, Mr. Crosby. Thank you for being part of my youth and life. Love.
I just put this on the stereo for the first time in years. I’m 70, and felt it appropriate to pass it on to my granddaughter, who at 16 is playing cello and guitar. It never hurts to share the classics from my young days.

Amazing group. Stills doesn’t get enough praise for his guitar playing.
Neil Young drowned him out! No offense intended to Mr. Young.
and his distinct vocals and organ playing and probably also production.
He does among working guitarists. He’s understood to be a founding original among rock guitarists. Four notes in, you know who’s playing. Not many for who you can say that.
Nothing today can compare to the vocals of these guys! Such sweet sound and lyrics of days gone by.

My 'soul' lives in the 60s and I knew this song in my mind. I heard it recently on a Woodstock documentary and started weeping. I went to bethel to see the Woodstock site and I never wanted to leave. What energy this song brought to my spirit.

most of us never never met or talked to David but we loved his spirit in the music he wrote and performed. at 65 i will never forget the first time i heard him and csny and the truth it spoke to me.
Rest in peace, David Crosby. I was born in '73, and have loved this genre of music since childhood. As I am approaching 50 this June, my appreciation of your music and that of your cohorts has created an indelible mark on my psyche. Thank you for the joy that you've all brought to the planet. 🤟🏼
I’m from New Orleans and damned lucky to be. My mother swore I was dancing before I was born and haven’t stopped yet - nor singing, either. My family loved ALL music. My first records were Edith Piaf, Eartha Kitt, Yma Sumac, Chopin, Burl Ives, Bach, Tom Lehrer, Papa Celestin, then it was Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint, the Meters, Professor Longhair, Dr. John, Ernie K-Doe, Fats Domino…that was my foundation. And I have never stopped adding to that list, thank heaven.
I grew up on that stuff.
Still in high school and I'm in love with this song. Sounds so 60s and so pure and beautiful. Truly can hit the soul and that's the purpose of music.

Beautiful and timeless. One of my all-time favorites.
In an interview, one member of the band said that Stills played just about all the instruments on this album. The soul is profound! Pure genius, with inimitable solos woven throughout. The harmonies rival a medieval Gregorian choir in their ability to evoke a religious feeling. And, as has been said, timeless. The theme of the song, post-nuclear apocalypse, also speaks to what I believe is a root cause of the youth rebellion of the sixties, fear of annihilation by their elders' folly, and a wish to recover sanity. That menace, of nuclear-tipped missiles, still hangs over us all today, and this song thus holds its meaning.
The rest of the band gave Stills the nickname Captain Manyhands. Great collaborative effort. Paul Kantner wrote most of the song, Crosby wrote the intro, and Stills added a verse for the CS&N version.
I’m a working musician who plays this song regularly at events. And I’m sure David Crosby plays the strong rhythm guitar on the main verse portion of this song, and that he contributed the unique jazz oriented chords of that section. Those are pure Crosby chords, typical of his musical signatures , which is also evident in Guenevere on the same album. That’s not Still’s musical style. So I’d say your assessment of is mostly correct, but let’s give Crosby his musical due.
Thank you for this insight. Yes, he deserves great credit for the overall composition and feel. The reference to Guinevere is apposite in this regard, as is the comparison with the Jefferson Airplane version, which is inferior in my opinion, in its ability to evoke a freedom that is bittersweet, paid for with civilization’s destruction. David Crosby belongs to the ages for his legacy and I credit his compositions with having wrought a portion of my innermost psychological framework. What a shame he was so troubled, but to play the blues, you’ve got to live the dues.
I wonder if the youth of today could catch the meaning of songs like this.
@@nancydemoss2945 Once we introduce the song live by saying it’s about the downside of nuclear war, we get both a laugh and some new appreciation for the song from some younger folks listening. Probably somewhat due to the recent nuke rattling of Vlad Putin.
