  • FAST's LSXR set the standard for aftermarket LS intakes when it was first introduced, and now it's available with two new shorter internal runner lengths in addition to the original design to match different RPM and displacement combinations. We test all three back to back on a 5th gen Camaro to see how the powerbands compare.

    Wasn't that a pushrod engine? How'd they get over 7k without valve problems? Did they use tricks they and just not mention it? The torque band looked weird on the 3rd run.

    • @Dr_Xyzt
      @Dr_Xyzt Před 6 lety +1

      You can wing the engine a little higher for short periods of time. Just because it's a pushrod setup doesn't mean it's going to fly apart at high speeds. People just don't understand that putting cams in their engines requires them to rev higher. If you add 30% more cam timing, the engine has to go 30% faster. 6000rpm becomes 7800. That in itself is hard on parts, Pushrod or DOHC have the same pain. So, we get around that with stroker kits and tuned headers. The factory setup runs at about 96% V.E. With a stroker crank, you get 110% v.e. with 10% more displacement, for a total of 5% more speed, or 6200 RPM. You'll find that every cammed Ls7 will make peak torque below 6200, and every street driven one will start to flatten out at around 5500, with enough over-rev to make the shifts feel stronger.

    • @sxgreene
      @sxgreene Před 5 lety

      Because it’s a LS for one lol. I see pushrod engines hit 7 grand a good amount. Guns cars and digits Explained it well In my opinion. It’s not like it’s a old 455, 454, 428 Or most of the old big blocks that when they over rev your basically playing with fire. May I ask if your more of a ford guy. Personally I despise overhead cams no matter what configuration I just think they’re unnecessary Expensive more Complicated For no reason and I think they were just a selling point for ford basically they’re play separating themselves from GM and Mopar. The 426 Hemi Could even have that sad about it if the engine Truly wasn’t a brilliant design except for the weight. They got the title of the elephant for a reason powerful and heavy. Also look at Ford’s new engine in the shelby If I’m not mistaken. It revs out to the Moon close to 9000 RPM I think but from everyone’s review that I’ve seen without driving Personally say that Even though I was a man so high they lack so much torque That if they didn’t have the extra Rpm’s to make up the gap when the LS’s or Hemis have to shift they would just be blown out of the water. Call the other end a sound of a Nice V8 With those different exhaust modes Could sell the cars on the road their own they should just play that in the showroom instead of music LOL.

      It is not always about Valvetrain to make it spin fast, Yes valve float is important but Piston speed has a lot to do with it.
      Take a Ferrari 360 for example, Big pistons small stroke! Bore & stroke: 85 mm × 79 mm (3.35 in × 3.11 in) 400HP and only 275 ft.lbs but turns 8500 RPM,
      Suzuki GSXR :74.5 mm × 57.3 mm (2.93 in × 2.26 in) 1Liter displacement 156WHP and only 76ft.lbs. with max RPM 12,000, the 600 turns 14,000. all without pneumatic valves like in 18,000RPM Formula 1 Cars.
      I know of dirt circle track pushrod V8's that turn 9-10K RPM. And There are some LS Chevy purpose builds that can turn 10K even 11K RPM. A lot of them are Destroked engines like a 6.0 Block with a 4.8Liter crankshaft.

      My LS6 can handle over 7,000 easily, i have the limiter set 6,600 since it does not really make much power after that. I put in dual beehive valve springs to handle the load of a bigger cam. Also I have installed chromoly push rods with a better oil pump.
