I loved it. I get why people don't care for the ending, but I didn't mind it as much. The mystery leading up to it was enjoyable for me.
I think this was one of the best sci-fi films in recent years. It had the wonder and sentiment of Spielberg yet still felt like a Jeff Nichols film.
Alonso always has some arbitrary thing to complain about that ruins the whole movie for him.
Absolutely loved this movie. Shame it's not getting the recognition it deserves.
I think the main concept of the movie is somewhat hard to explain as the reviewer says but let me put it this way. Its a sci-fi or supernatural thriller. The thriller part of the movie is well done. Its well directed, acted, there is a great degree of authenticity in the movie. But the sci-fi or supernatural part is hard to explain or should I say just fails to impress. But its well made though. You can see the talent of the director in this movie.
@@brajeshsingh2391 This movie was a bridge to nowhere, the ending is so disappointing
Michael Shannon is the defining character actor of the 2010s
See "Bug"
THat fucker is terrible.
KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!
Right on. I’ve become a big Edgerton fan as of late as well. Solid actor
Maybe Phoenix but other than that, ya Shannon is great
Leave it up to Alonso to slam a great movie.
+Nelson Espe and then praise garbage like Jupier Ascending
+Nelson Espe Yeah because you get to decide which ones are great movies.
+Movie Lover206 I agree with him here, but the ending to Cloverfeild was great. That was a much more satisfying movie.
He's right though. It's not good. It was boring as fuck.
I agree I hate his perspective on this. I thought it was great! I did a review on my channel that is positive if you wanna check it out!
I'm with Alonso. It all falls apart once we find out what the boy is. It opens up a lot of questions that don't get answered
Not really a turn, just that whenever you bring up aliens, the focus shifts to them. And we don't lean anything about them.
As for Cloverfield, I was disappointed at first when I realized they were going to do the alien thing. For the first 3 quarters of the movie, we think her journey is over when she escapes the bunker. Then we realize her journey won't be over until the aliens are over (personally I hate mass scale invasion movies because they can never end.) There's a feeling of delayed release. But once I thought about it, I accepted it.
This movie looks so good and different so far this Year!!! I'm starting to get really tired of of superhero movies and dumb action We need more like this Hollywood!!!!!!!
It sucked, don't waste your money..
+TWENTY EIGHT No you're kinda wrong, this movie is really unique and interesting, a change from most of the junk that gets thrown into the theatres
+uhRoss thank you well said
Juanscum381 Yeah, I just saw it tonight, and I enjoyed it a lot
+uhRoss it didn't suck but it seemed unfinished. we knew nothing of the boy at all. they could of given us way more detail into his life.. that was the only negative about the movie.
Don't speak for everyone Alonso. I LIKED the 10 Cloverfield Lane ending.
Alonso hates everything ...
+ffunit Not even close to true.
+ffunit yes he hates everything because he’s a self righteous ideologue without perspective.
+Rob Cannon which is saying something given he has four eyes
He liked movie 43 and jem and the holograms...
+ffunit Except Jupiter Ascendign! LOL! He is the worst film critic ever!
Just saw it today and I have to say what a bloody fantastic film it was, it's a right damn shame we can't live in a world like how it was in the ending!! If we didn't have such corrupt governments then we would be I guess!!
+Jonathon Kearney How does fancy architecture make a better world? If those people had no vice then they weren't people. remember soylent green? When you see a utopia, look behind the scenes.
I have no fucking clue why people disliked the ending. It's pretty standard Scifi stuff, but everyone is acting like it's something completely out of left field. It's not, it's a beautifully shot character driven piece that has a nice payoff. And it doesn't need to answer every question you have with the movie, since that's not the point. The point are the characters, and everything involving them were wrapped up perfectly.
A 2016 version of STARMAN with a kid. Very similar overtones and music.........I enjoyed it!!
wow yeah I remember that movie
Jeff Bridges/Karen Allen : All I have to do is dream.
Check it out
What the heck does "official review" mean? What a click bait garbage title.
What a trivial thing to even brother bringing up.
Just watched it, and I fucking loved it. Jeff Nichols is probably in my Top 10 favorite directors now. I loved Take Shelter, and I really liked Mud. The guy is a genius. I loved that this movie leaves a lot of stuff up for the audience's interpretation. The musical score also set the perfect tone for the film. It had a very mysterious sound to it. This movie's awesome. It's a 9/10 for me.
Good to see Tim Grierson back.
Agree that the preceding mystery is more interesting than the final reveal...but with these types of things the journey is more important than the destination. :)
The problem with the ending is - what's the point? Who cares if they have fancy architecture and nice landscaping? So they live in a weird parallel universe version of Dubai, so what? Does that mean they don't get nose bleeds and ear infections? Don't have war? Social unrest? Wealth inequality? Homelessness? Disease? Famine? Suffering? Death? (Might get pretty crowded if there's no death.)
So what is the point of just moving to an address with a nicer view? How is that a good ending for a movie like this which is full of portentiousness up to the end? Surely it should portend more than just a material upgrade to one's living conditions.
Utterly deflating.
I thought the ending meant that these things lived bigger and better than us and were so close. We couldn't see them because we as a people haven't attained that level of awareness or potential. The Kid is the promise of what we can all become. Fully aware (or WOKE). haha. the kids are the future, and they can achieve what we have failed too.
And the last bit with Michael Shannon symbolized how we all have that potential to be aware in all of us, but missed opportunities, the world, and limitations restrict us from being this "god creature thing". Whole things is an allegory
Ian Smart
That's all very well and good, and no doubt that was the intent of the film makers.
My point is that if you are going to show better, it has to amount to more than 'bigger'.
How do we know anything was better just because they had fancy-shmancy buildings. Does that mean they had no crime? No war? No exploitation? No disease, suffering and death?
Who the hell did the construction work for the rich fucks who lived in those fancy shmancy buildings? Some poor exploited pricks on minimum wage, that's who. That's my point - it was utterly meaningless to show such a banal and mundane final destination.
Elbownian haha sure. I look at this the same way i saw 2001. It's not meant to b taken literally. Everything is meant to represent something else, so the final destination was meant to seem advanced and "above" but very tactile and vague.
And the idea that this innocent kid free from hate or judgement was able to reach that place probably says something about the virtue of the higher world. I think that's the point. Only someone as pure as the kid was worthy of being in this place, so i took it as a given that they were "better".
The point is the mystery and beauty of another dimension we do not know about. We were never supposed to know anything about their world, since that's not the point. It's pretty damn simple.
Whatever their world is like... it sure looked very peaceful and beautiful to me. Without a doubt far superior to ours.
Considering the intellect of this child one can only imagine how intelligent these beings must be and what their society is like. War? Maybe they are a hive-mind with a collective consciousness which allows them to live in harmony. Wealth inequality? Maybe their world isn't even based on matter but shaped by their collective mind instead. Famine and suffering? No need to suffer if you have no physical body and exist out of pure energy. Death? Maybe this utopia is where all humans go when we die? (which is suggested at the end when his father's eyes start glowing in the sunlight.)
I loved Mud and Take Shelter but this movie was.... eh. Visuals were great, but the characters were boring and the mystery behind the boy wasn't very satisfying
Michael Shannon WAS Boardwalk Empire, for me. Nelson Van Alden is one of the greatest TV characters of all time. And despite Alonzo's prissiness, I'm really looking forward to this movie
Well hey if you wanna see a positive review check out my channel. I loved this movie!
The performances in this movie were excellent. I enjoyed this movie, even the ending. However a portion of the ending reminded me very strongly of a 2015 science fiction/fantasy movie. To avoid spoilers, I will not name that film. I wonder if that is why Alonso disliked the film's ending.
I'm guessing your talking about Tomorrowland.
Ryan Proctor Affirmative.
great movie ...and the ending was awesome
disappointing movie. the government just ignored the whole fact that buildings appeared out of nowhere.
Wasn't there an implication during the FBI interview at the end that only certain people could see the buildings?
No
Some ppl didn't see them and the ones that did, wouldn't admit it. Kind of a crazy thing to cop to in the real world. Like spotting a flying saucer or something.
And Clarke Kent looked just like Superman but nobody cared. It's a movie not a documentary.
Midnight Special is one of those films that stay true to human emotion. and I think that is why people find it boring. It doesnt focus on typically sci-fi themes. But when it does focus on sci-fi naturality, it goes beyond the viewers expectation. Sometimes thats bad, sometimes its good.
I went to this film with some people who thought the explanation at the
end was "pretty straightforward", but it's not consistent with any
mythos I've heard of. The explanation kind of reminded me of a bad
Disney film I'd seen in the 90s about these sisters who lived on the
moon and had pink hair. And honestly, it wasn't that straightforward an explanation.
The ending was so ambitious!!! I loved it, its unexplainable, and I think that is why people hate it. Because they dont understand it, and no one ever will.
The two on the left were actually discussing the movie in depth, but the guy on the right pretty much had nothing to say but "I DON'T LIKE THE END!" Simething tells me he's like those people who decide they hate stuff solely to be better than the people who like it. The ending wasn't as good as the rest of the movie, but it still didn't feel forced to me and it worked well with the falling action leading to the very very end.
Ok.. so how does it end? I just googled and couldnt find a spoiler.
I like that this guy sides with the finale of 10 Coverfield Lane over Midnight Special. 10 Cloverfield Lane had to shoehorn in an 8 year old movie (that wasn't that good) to get box office returns, over the original finale of Midnight Special. So it's okay to whore out a good script for money, but when you want to step outside the box it doesn't work?
There's a balance to be struck between slowing a movie down for atmosphere and making me wish it would end.
To me the movie sucked, it tries to portray a depth that simply isn't there. It just floats on the mystery of the kid, but that's pretty much it, you don't actually know the characters, their struggles, their past, it comes off as shallow by the time you reach the end. Take for example the dad, the only thing he says in the whole movie is "Alton is the only thing I have ever believed in", and that's the extent of his character. At the end of the movie they make this shot of him looking into the distance but its empty because we don't know his arc or anything, it's just a movie about a dad protecting his son it doesn't goes further than that.
There is no deeper meaning at the end of the day Alton is just some random character with powers as many others we have seen before in TV and movies, and we are supposed to feel astounded by the reveal at the end but it doesn't work because it really doesn't mean anything. Alton isn't actually revealing some deeper truth or solving any question aside from the mystery of his origin.
Anyway that is my take on it, it will be forgotten as another movie about some guy with superpowers.
As this movie was 6 years ago now I don't think it would be any great spoiler talking about the ending . I liked the movie , and thought the ending made good sense . I'm not sure what people were expecting to be honest , maybe people were wanting a space ship to land like Close Encounters . When most of the ancient texts from all around the world talk of entities from other worlds , They are not geographically somewhere else , but inhabit the same space , just on a different frequency or in another dimension. This was shown in the scene where the alien building was seen emerging from within the one in our reality . They both inhabit the same space , but with no knowledge of each others existence .
I also liked what came after when even when faced with the knowledge of another world , people were still carrying on with ordinary life pretending none of it had happened , as it was either their job to , or as it would otherwise overturn their view of reality to think differently . How accurate of the mindset of 20th century humanity .
These people remind me of my dad getting annoyed with From Dusk Till Dawn because it had vampires in it.
This movie is a classic waiting for it's recognition. A modern day Close Encounters!
I hope these people feel embarrassed when it finally reaches people!
Just saw it. And holy boring. Got 8 hours asleep last night and it took everything in me not to fall asleep during this movie.
interesting film. it had me guessing the whole time, kind of thought it was alien related but wasn't so sure, I kept thinking the boy was either an alien or a god son. or even the devil when he brought down the sateillite at the gas station. but I like how they kept the viewer guessing without boring us. it reminded me of e.t. and close encounters of the third kind. and I love sci-fi films like that. I think they should've had more of a backstory. like why did he land on earth from his home planet, and how did he end up with his parents. that probably would've explained the film a lot more to people rather than just starting the film the way it did with the boy and his dad and friend on the run from the govt. but other than that I enjoyed the film. I wonder if they plan on having a sequel or prequel for this film.
yeah I agree it definitely needed more back story ....I couldn't wait to see this movie ...it could have been better but I liked it
The ending to this was exactly like Alex Proyas' "Knowing". I loved the premise and mystery surrounding the kid, but I thought it was disappointing to see this film settle, and go in a very familiar direction at the end.
I wouldn't say it's like knowing... The earth gets destroyed in that haha.
haha, true. I just meant in the sense that the kids in both movies have to leave their parent behind on Earth and go with some sort of aliens because "they don't belong" Knittel Man
what a snoozefest this movie
The answer is perfect!!! This is one of the best films of the year!
For once I sorta agree with Duhlanzo... SORT OF. I didn’t love the reveal of what Alton is but by no means did I hate it. I would’ve liked to know exactly how this kid was born to a couple ordinary human beings though
but like... if you want to know what's going on the whole time, isn't that wanting an answer? so why is that a negative?
i mean look I'm all for leaving endings up to interpretation and I love endings that are ambiguous and abrupt, not answering anything. but c'mon.
Kristen Dunst was excellent in this
Alonsa takes really extreme judgements mid-movie-experience... clearly. He's not one to care to re-evaluate his thoughts when the movies finished. He's one to kind of chaotically decide whether or not he likes the whole when experiencing a piece of something. It's a flawed pattern, he kind of wears openly. So as much as I think he is way too biased at times, at least he doesn't try to hide his bias through slimy tactics like some far worse critics do.
It killed me that this movie was a disappointment. The majority of the characters and side plots were pointless. It was beautiful and certain parts were truly well done. It simply wasn't a full movie at all.
5:07... but nobody (and I've read all the comments here and on Rotten Tomatoes) NOBODY wonders how Adam Driver and the kid escape the (presumably) Top Secret military bunker... like, everyone seems to have missed it? One moment he's Captured, next, he and Adam are out... and Adam doesn't even lose his job!?
I dunno what's more baffling, that it happened, or that no one and I mean no one noticed this ginormous plot hole! 😮 crazy.
The 3rd act reveal in this didn't bother me that much. 10 Cloverfield Lane's third act reveal almost ruined that movie for me.
I agree with Alonso, the reveal was so lame and so poorly told and uninteresting that I just could not give less of a shit. The whole light gimmick in general was annoying me, it felt so cheap and overdone. It's all just kinda bland and hollow.
Anyone know what the music in the trailer is?
Alonso gets very into this "not knowing" thing but I just don't think it's possible for mainstream films.
Reminds me a bit of Firestarter.
The 'answer' is closer to the truth than people realise.
Remove the guy in the glasses and this is a thoughtful review by two critics who were paying attention to details.
Tim Grierson never looks at Christy when he talks. He is always facing Alonso...
+lolsih101 yea, it bothered me a little, lol. He should have given both looks from time to time to create a balance, maybe he just loves staring into Alonso's beautiful eyes, lol.
Spoilers: He is found by Charles Xavier and joins the X-Men.
This movie is "Firestarter" meets "Road to Perdition"
I loved Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton and the boy actor. The ending was solid for me. I cared more about the characters than the answer the ending gives us.
Go find it? It was in 5 screens I think.
Ending ruined the whole movie for me, I think he's being generous giving it a 6/10 to be honest. I'd give it a 2/10.
I don't usually agree with Alonso, but I'm with him here. I was really digging it and then when that reveal came, I was just kind of like "really?"
i was really hyped. watched and it kinda disappointed me. first act was amazing tho, great craft and acting.
Dude with glasses…
It’s a story of a ranch/cult that believes Alton is the savior. Shannon plays his father who broke out the ranch to lead his child (by any means) to find the true path. Both the government and ranch are chasing them for Alton. Not that hard bro. It’s prolific.
Alonso looks like the werewolf dad from the Teen Wolf movie lol
Wheres the Gotham reviews
I like the idea of the ending, but not the execution so much. There was a much better way to show it than what they chose to do.
I was looking forward to this and then watched it and wished i hadn't! such a shame as looks lovely with great acting but becomes ponderous and the end is a let down with terrible effects.
you need to ask your camera men/‘women’ to get their cameras in focus
I agree the ending and all supporting cgi was a bad choice and spoiled the experience for me too. Totally unnecessary and too literal ending, and though it attempts to hold the mystery, it destroys the purpose in the process.
I thought that when adam driver went into that room to talk to the kid he was gonna say. "Tell me about the droid?"
Caught this movie on the weekend and loved it. The story of boy wizard Alton Towers being pursued across 1970's Americana by Darth Maul from Girls was absolutely brilliant, and the part at the end where he finally makes it to Mega-Hogwarts and has to say goodbye to his mother Hermione was heartbreaking. Best JRR Abrams movie to date, 9.5/10.
How would one know when an Act ends??
wide release is when?
Nichols says the first weekend in April is when we should expect a wider release.
I still don't like Christi for giving a crappy review in tdkr. I loved Spider-Man of steel: the force exodus
this movie is the love child of spielberg and mann
Let me guess, the kid is an alien? Just guessing, I don't know. I REALLY want to see this but it's not playing near me. It doesn't appear to be playing in the ENTIRE Philadelphia area.
+movieman82us Very limited release right now.
I will tell you this movie is like the new ET. But he's not an alien. Wanna see a positive review, check out my channel!
What's the point of this review!? When obviously they mentioned two grate movies and they are complaining... What do they want ghostbusters and ninja Turtles.. Wow "film" critics
"grate"
So, the boy who beeps has a new super power in this movie.
one of the worst (intentionally serious) films I've ever watched.
I bet people who like this movie have a tendency to like things that need no explanation... Like religion
One of the most pointless movies you will ever watch, hands down.
Did anybody else get a gay vibe from Joel Edgerton's character? I thought there was going to be a point where he was going to admit he was in love with Michael Shannon's character.
+sonicjrjr14 I feel like you could be right. I don't know if I would say love but there was a devotion there between them that made me think maybe he could have had a crush on him when they were younger. Or he could have just wanted to help Alton because of what he showed him.
YES!...No!...YES!...(faces the audience) I should stay longer...(twisting the knife) I guess. lmao Alonso saying things.
lol how was this movie about character? Those guys had like no layers besides "we care bout this kid because reasons"
Alonso is such a whiny.
He takes the fun and magic out of the movies.
Perhaps he should look for another job...
I agree with you. If you wanna see a positive review on this movie check out my channel
i was hyped. then i watched it and was disappointed.
Don't see how... It was a REALLY solid movie and I thought the 3rd act was great.
Why were u hypee
Michael Shannon is a poor mans Ray Liotta.
+J.A. Contes
lol what? I like Ray Liotta but come on
+J.A. Contes Shannon is a better actor than Liotta
I really don't care for either...
I think Alonso just hates modern architecture.... : P
I think he just doesn't get it. I look at this movie as the new ET
I like to use Mr. Plinkett's character test on this film. Describe one of the characters without saying what they look like or what they do in the film. Go ahead! Try! And in keeping with the theme of Star Wars prequels, every actor in this film should be good, but isn't even trying. They all just grumble and stare into space, and the kid plays the pronoun game. I mean, what was the point? Of any of it? The kid shoots lights out of his eyes for no reason, they drive around for 2 hours, and then he gets teleported into the sky. Who CARES? Some of the editing was terrible as well. This movie was just an absolute mess and a waste of time.
Fantastic movie very Carpenterish music
Is Alonso always like that? Jippers.....
I thought it's Hodor... omg
LOL, another Alonso classic!
love this movie. great review
I loved this movie! I did s review on my channel if anyone wants another persons perspective!
+J Man if you could, check out my channel. I did a review of the movie too. I would love if you told me what you think.
Cyclops
Exactly what I thought immediately after watching the trailer
You guys dislike almost everything lol
5 mins and i'm bored.
This movie starts great and the. It becomes absolute dog shit
STARMAN.... but way crapper
this movie was horrible, i wouldnt recommend it to anyone, slow paced, some high levels of retardation of social interactions when characters take more than 5 seconds to reply to eachother, no plot twists, no tension. i don't know, this movie it's just drama, don't expect suspense, thriller, or anything about it, it is just pure drama. it is pretentious enough to catch the attention of hipters but it is a mediocre movie, 5.0 / 10 for me.
Another unprepared, unprofessional, unreviewed movie from these people. You should do this in your couch, not in a CZcams channel.
Piece of crap movie. So glad I did not see it in theater. Half of the movie's dialog is in the trailer. Most of the movie is just people looking at each other and occasionally saying one to three word sentences. There is no real explanation of anything and then the movie ends.
😘😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Tim Grierson is the gayest straight guy out there. And way to high, for this movie.
