    A young woman wakes up after a terrible accident to find that she's locked in a cellar with a doomsday prepper, who insists that he saved her life and that the world outside is uninhabitable following an apocalyptic catastrophe. Uncertain what to believe, the woman soon determines that she must escape at any cost.

    This movie was awesome. The chick was a more subtle and smarter kick ass than your regular final girl and the twist was fun. John Goodman was snubbed for an Oscar btw.

    I agree pretty strongly with Will Bibbiani on this one; the movie was going incredibly strongly up until the final ten minutes. It has nothing to do with the reveal of what has happened outside the bunker (which initially added to the depth of the story that preceded it), but it is entirely to do with the absolute tonal shift. In the space of a few seconds, we've moved from a tense human story to a wild unbelievable action plot that looks to want to set up some over-budget sequel. This film really needed a bleaker, more ambiguous finale (something more akin to The Mist) than the feel-good Hollywood action fodder we received.

  • @MauroRincon
    @MauroRincon Před 8 lety +8

    This movie should have ended with her leaving the bunker, climbing and top of the truck and seeing something really fucked up in the distance, so she thinks "maybe staying was best after all?". No need for a big awkward reveal that makes the movie funny.

      Well this was the original ending:
      In the original script, Michelle escapes the shelter and is chased through the farmhouse by Howard, who still wants to "protect" her. She blinds him with bathroom cleaner, he tells her about his tragic life (dead wife, missing daughter, treacherous Nate, etc.), and then she shoots him in the kneecap and runs away. He ends the movie alive, entreating Michelle to "be careful." Later, after traveling down empty roads and finding no one around to help her, she crests a hill and sees the Chicago skyline, smoldering and destroyed. No explanation is given. We don’t even know what she will do next; only that she now knows that Howard, for all his oddity, was correct. The final line in the script is, "She slowly pulls down the mask on the hazmat suit before taking a breath.

    SPOILERS
    I loved it, and loved the ending. I don't really get why people aren't enjoying the resolution. If you know Cloverfield you are expecting something not from this world. I think the ending was full of suspense and kept me on the edge of my seat. When she turned to Houston, I wanted to see more and it was just as fantastic as the first two acts. Oh, but because it's aliens people thing they're above it and it's silly. Whatever.

    • @kristopherschermerhorn998
      @kristopherschermerhorn998 Před 8 lety +1

      +Brandon Rodriguez First of all - aliens are so overdone, and so cliched at this point. It was a bad twist. The fact that the aliens looked downright laughable didn't help things any. Had it been the Cloverfield monster outside of the bunker, that would have been neat (if not a bit predictable, but still neat). Had it turned out that Howard, while homicidally crazy himself, had been right the entire time - that too would have been satisfying. Had it turned out that Howard had lied about the entire thing, that too would have been satisfying as well. But the aliens twist was stupid, cliched, overdone - and poorly executed to boot. Bummer, as I am a big JJ Abrams fan, was a big fan of Cloverfield, and was really looking forward to this film.

    • @kristopherschermerhorn998
      @kristopherschermerhorn998 Před 8 lety

      Well yeah, someone is always going to complain as everyone has their own tastes, so something is always going to appeal to one and not to the other. I for one had very high hopes for this movie. Howard thought a foreign military had attacked our air to wipe us out and take over our land, he never thought that it was an alien invasion.

      SPOILERS
      I think fans would have appreciate if the 3rd act was her leaving the bunker only to realize that part of the world(not necessarily the whole world) was being overrun by small and large Cloverfield monsters. Having her run from and kill one of the smaller ones would be believable but when she runs toward the house, that could have been when the Cloverfield monster comes from behind the house after hearing the car alarm, and sees her. Maybe you could actually make up some creative way to explain it being able to emit blue light or something. Having her kill it would be a none starter but maybe having John Goodman come out and destract it allowing her to escape would have been a good ending, and then seeing it eat Goodman, and while shes driving down the rode she stops cos the lightening strikes and she just sees a sea of cloverfield monster ahead of her and the movie ends on that cliffhanger wondering if she survived. But who knows maybe you guys are right, people would probably still have complained. Its clear now the Cloverfield franchise is a anthology and not a franchise about the monster.

    SPOILERS
    The tagline to this movie is "Monsters come in many forms." When viewed through that lens, one realizes how brilliant the ending is. The entire film, you're left wondering if there are monsters outside or if John Goodman is the monster. But the ending plays off your expectations of a binary, one-or-the-other answer. The answer is both, and that's what, at least in my eyes, makes the ending so special.

      Suit Ninja! The original script always had the ending in mind, clearly you haven't read about the origins of the movie, look up what the director says, it was always the intention - it just so happens the title fit in with the film, and hey, why not? If you were a producer, why wouldn't u use a name to can increase profit for a film that's already solid on its own? The director will possibly have far more opportunities now and increase his salary - if this was called anything else, it could've gone under the radar.

    A great "Twilight Zone" episode untill the ending was dictated by marketing reasons. The very title is a Spoiler, of course, so the ending wasn´t all that surprising for me. But I liked the film up to that point a lot. John Goodman is amazing.

    Just saw it, one of the best thrillers I've seen in a very long time. I'm usually good at calling out what may happen next, but I couldn't in this one. It's a 100% complementary film for Cloverfield. To be honest coming out of the first one I knew it wasn't going to be found footage, but I thought it was going to be from a military perspective. Can't wait to know more about this alien invasion, I feel like that one will give us more.

    I think this movie was good, better than the reviews I heard about it, everyone I know that saw it didn't like it, but this was truly a good film, word of mouth probably ruined it for some people but I waited to see it and wasn't disappointed, I could care less what other film it was suppose to be, a good film is a good film, regardless. john goodman was good in this film, he was creepy,menacing, smart, he was the star of the film ,the whole child killer thing I didn't care for that angle but it fit the type of character that he was, mary Elizabeth was good as well. sad to see john Gallagher's character die, would've loved to see how him and Mary's character both got away, but I think this definitely set up a real cloverfield sequel. I hope they bring back mary Elizabeth's character for the sequel.

As the ending was happening I was sitting there still wondering if something was happening and then the movie would do a 180 on me and switch it. It still surprised me, and the ending was 10x better because multiple moments Goodmans character kept mentioning Aliens and Martians, and when the ending happened, it had really gave me a sense of "WHAAAAT?!".

    Honestly, this movie was AMAZING. Acting was great, you didnt know what was going to happen, who is right/wrong. Some people may be turned off by the ending, but it's just a matter of PREFERENCE. The people on here saying the movie was bad are honestly just being dense. What Bibbiani says about the tonal shifts is also just wrong. The characters are consistent and the score throughout the movie and tenseness is the same through the ending, Bibbiani just didn't like the end, doesn't mean the end was bad.
    Objectively, the movie was REALLY good the acting is REALLY good. But you might not like it based on preference.

She did not want to repeat what she regretted in the market when the little girl could have used her help. And considering what she just went through & survived, I think she feels like she is ready for anything. That was really the whole story behind Michelle. It's about one woman's journey to come to grips with her demons & not run when she should stay & fight.

    Let's clear this up:
    Cloverfield is not really a series now. 10 Cloverfield Lane doesn't even take place in the same universe/time. Cloverfield has become a brand name now for something like the Twilight Zone. Cloverfield (original) takes place in around 2006, and then 10 Cloverfield Lane takes place in the year 2015-2016 (you see an iPhone 6 in the movie). Now we still MIGHT get a sequel to the original Cloverfield, but 10 Cloverfield lane has nothing to do with the original other than they are suspenseful disaster movies with a cool name.

      +Cody Ruffenach I don't agree. The i-phone was probably just a slip up. It's fairly obvious that "10 Cloverfield Lane" is taking place in the same universe as the first movie. First of all, you have the big Slusho neon sign in the window of the gas station. That was the drink that Rob was going to Japan to promote in the first movie. Second, you hear the radio reports of the catastrophic blackout on the Eastern seaboard. Along with that, Emmett talks about seeing several bright flashes that looked like something biblical. Well, when nuclear explosions happen, it knocks out the power grid for many miles away. And the bright light from the explosion can also be seen for many miles away. It's very fair to assume the reason for the blackout is because the military has initiated the Hammer-Down Protocol all along the East coast which was the last thing we knew about from the found footage in the first movie. Remember, there was MULTIPLE SIGHTINGS of the monsters/aliens that the military was going to attack. Third, Howard was involved with the satellite that ends up crashing into the ocean. Now that we know aliens are involved, we can reasonably assume that the reason the satellite crashed was because one of the huge spaceships knocked the satellite out of orbit. There was a few other references to the events from the first movie as well. So even though it's not a direct sequel, it is withing the same universe.

    It;s REALLY cool to see John Goodman getting so much praise everywhere for this film...whether they like the movie or not, it's undeniable how good he was here. His character was multi-dimensional. I have to say (without spoiling)...outside the bunker is actually to me the most underwhelming part of the movie. Luckily it mostly takes place in the bunker where all the suspense is found.
    (now you might not want to read this until after seeing it because I still highly reccomend checking it out):
    NOT that nothing happens outside the bunker, but what does happen I only felt underwhelmed by because it was something I personally felt was slightly unoriginal. I mean sure, we haven't seen...'what's out there' before, but it just seems poorly designed. I felt like it was too 'War of the Worlds' only slightly modified. I did however like the last 2 minutes outside the bunker..when a decision is made. I thought it left open plenty of ideas and just felt complete at that point.
    Also...you may be thinking "Well you were just expecting something more like Cloverfield", but that's not the case. I went into this actually assuming it was going to be unrelated to Cloverfield almost enitrely (after hearing it was more like an Anthology which made more sense)...so actually the 'Reveal' at the end just made me almost sorta letdown that it was tied-in to Cloverfield at all.
    People are either going to love or hate the reveal in the end. Then again I don't hate it neccessarily, it made me atleast curious of their nature and purpose...but it honestly felt like something more out of a SyFy movie rather than Sci-Fi. It was like "Meh" as in I know I haven't particularly seen this in other films, but yet I felt like I have a thousand times. Even the bigger reveal of the reveals (you'll know what I mean), seemed even more generic...I mean sure it had 'features' but like a combination of everything we've seen before.
    For me, everything fantastic about this movie was in the bunker...everything dissapointing came outside. I would still give this a strong 8/10. Or let's put it this way...The Bunker: 9/10 Outside: 5/10

      +Tracy Gilbert Apparently not. She survived one obstacle after another throughout the movie. And the "new" ending just gave us another reason to fear for her safety. Will she live? Will she die? Will she outsmart yet another protagonist? It's actually a very brilliant ending. Let's face it, if all she did was get in the car & drive away towards a destroyed city, I think the audience would have felt cheated. Once the audience knows without question that something truly terrible has indeed happened up above, we will expect that Michelle won't be out of danger wants she makes it to the surface. And even when she gets out of the bunker, we are still teased for several minutes. Is the danger gone? Was there really any danger to begin with? It's all staged so well. The ending did not feel rushed to me. I can't wait to see it again. lol

Then you saw that ending, you'd be kind of shocked by this sudden shift in tone. I am 100% with William Bibbiani. Here is my problem, I went in expecting a Cloverfield sequel. I didn't get one for the first 90 minutes. But honestly what I got was better. I absolutely loved the first 90 minutes of this movie. However, the ending just absolutely killed the movie for me. if you are going to make a Cloverfield sequel, then make a Cloverfield sequel. If you aren't, then don't do it, or at least leave some more mystery to it. I'm fine with the direction they went, I just feel like these were two entirely different movies that didn't fit together in the end. It just felt rushed and like something they had to do at the end for fans, even though what they did probably hurt more than it helped.

      +Jason Miller that's fine, that isn't my problem with the movie. I don't care whether it was a sequel or not. My problem is that they wanted people to think the movie was a sequel. That's why they have Abrams presented first in the trailer with a Cloverfield name. If they aren't really doing a sequel then don't do it at all or leave it more mysterious. Movie would have been so much better without that ending. Instead it was like they wanted to do fan service and show aliens so there is some relevance to the original Cloverfield, when in reality that "fan service" was more insulting than anything else.

    • @JTube571
      @JTube571 Před 8 lety

      amachikas11 They never wanted people to think it was a sequel. Only the people that didn't read about it before seeing it would think that. If you or anyone else had read about the movie before hand, you would have seen the multiple interviews from JJ and Dan telling us that it's only a blood relative and/or an anthology film. Cloverfield is only the name of the movies, the monster in the original was never called Cloverfield, that was a name given to him by fans. With that said, going forward if you see "Cloverfield" in the title, think of it as a sci-fi film made by Bad Robot. Nothing more.

    • @amachikas11
      @amachikas11 Před 8 lety

      First off, the average movie goer isn't going to watch interviews before the movie and do research to see if it is a sequel or not. Having Cloverfield in the title should be sufficient reason enough to believe it is a sequel. I get you're point, but you are smart enough to understand that it is kinda false advertising. You shouldn't have to research the movie to understand it isn't a sequel. I'm not actually upset that it wasn't a real sequel which is why I think you are missing my point. I actually liked the movie as is. I just think the end made it a half ass sequel rather than either being a sequel or not being one.

    • @JTube571
      @JTube571 Před 8 lety

      amachikas11 A half assed sequel would be having a different big monster or having the same one but only showing it for 5 minutes. Also, those in the know are keeping an eye on a movie scheduled to release next year that may tie the first two movies together a little more.

    Just saw it. Consider this your spoiler warning for my comment.
    Great movie. As others have commented, Bibbs opinion is surely solely his own. Usually a few minutes into a movie, I can feel it out, see the plot arc, the possible "twists" upcoming, etc. and it gets really boring for me, really fast. Especially if you throw in some bad, cliche writing. Thankfully, this movie had none of that. I mean, if you're gonna introduce aliens into a movie, this was a great way to do it. I think there was enough mystery left to the aliens, and everything else at the end of the movie, that it kept you engaged. I didn't see this one coming, and much of what the other two reviewers said was on the nose, I think. It was a clever way to go the direction they did, plus I don't know about everybody else but while I was watching this, I kept wondering if this had any connection to the previous "Cloverfield" movie, but I guess no, it didn't...? Anyway, that helped throw me off too, and I like to be thrown off in a movie. Like I said, if I can guess how the whole thing is gonna unwind with fair certainty and or accuracy, it gets boring real quick. The movie set out to keep audiences guessing, and it did that well, and in spades. If they want aliens at the end, then aliens it is! I would have also accepted the Russians, or Chinese, or... whatever! The setup (i.e. the whole rest of the movie!) was that good I think.

      +antonio rodrigues Thank You!!! I was thinking the exact same thing. It's like "it's not a sequel per se, but it does follow the CLOVERFIELD universe. So the ending totally would fit. Totally agree

      +antonio rodrigues What should you expect? A shaky camera & a monster that you really only get to see for about 20 seconds if that. LOL. I'm glad a different approach was taken with this second movie in the franchise. I loved the first movie. But this one is just as good if not better. The heart of the story is about a girl trying to deal with her demons & become the strong woman she so desperately wants to be. That is exactly what we get & Mary Elizabeth Winstead gives an Oscar worthy performance. So does John Goodman. Both should be nominated for an Oscar.

    I d like what you had to say about this movie. I also feel that you really do not need to see the film in order to enjoy this. I also did a review of this movie .

      +Aviri Char if that last part did not happen I would of felt cheated a little even though it's not like the first one but still they should never even put clover field in the title if you think her just leaving the place and nothing clover fieldish happens people would feel pissed either way

    • @BilboB
      @BilboB Před 8 lety

      +Lexcool25 it's not a cloverfield movie just because it has the name, the movie was originally going to be called The Cellar, until JJ Abrams bought the script and attached the cloverfield title to it.

      Aviri Char a lot of rambling not much sense made in that post. It's fair point people are making that the ending feel like a different movie, which was made to make stupid people like you enjoy the movie. ok thanks bye

    That's it . . . for every spoiler-free reviewer I stumble upon to get the meat of the film, since sitting through tense dramas aren't my thing despite my interest in Cloverfield, there's a downvote a-coming.

    This movie was great. I watched Cloverfield when it came out, so I knew since this film was named after it that the aliens were going to be real. Maybe being prepared for that coloured my perception of the movie, but I was fine with the ending. There were still plenty of things I didn't see coming.

    Its like a twilight zone episode and worthy of the title unlike the horrible series revamp with FOrrest Whitaker. The joker in the middle thought Prometheus was good and that sucked
