Man, my friend, I don't know were you went but, I sure hope you're doing well. Unfortunately, I found your channel not too long ago. You, by far, have some of the best video tutorials for the E46 and it's greatly appreciated. People don't understand how tedious and time consuming it is to not only do the maintenance or repair on the vehicle, but also take the time to film and document the procedure. Many thanks! Your videos are priceless! 👍
You are getting the camera shots and the lighting on point man.Your how to is by far some of the best I've ever seen. I always refer to you when I get time to wrench on the e46 . Which is every weekend because it's a 15yr old e46 . Keep it up man you make it so much easier for us all. I'm starting to think your secretly paid by BMW to keep us wanting to stick with em.
I agree - The 50's Kid has skills and the ability to explain everything we needed to know.
I know it's kind of randomly asking but do anyone know of a good place to watch newly released movies online ?
@Josue Conner flixportal :)
@Maxim Curtis Thank you, signed up and it seems to work :) I appreciate it!
@Josue Conner No problem xD
Excellent DIY video! I just did this today and would like to share a few notes...
First: Silicone spray. It works better than the thick grease, makes things slide right on and less messy than the thick grease. Hit all the plastic/rubber hose connections. Second: Get some DeOxit spay and hit ALL the pin connections, male and female. Your car will thank you and it also makes sliding the connectors together easier. Third: Watch the booster hose at the Sucking Pump end. Be careful! Mine broke broke off at that weak connection. I'mm trying an epoxy fix for now but I'll replace it with the updated BMW part.
The hardest part of the whole process was the first hose on the vid, the one that "turns" up underneath the intake runner. I swear that one took me an hour and 8 or so tries. But I got it. After that it was smooth sailing.
This is a fiddly job but not that difficult and made much easier if you watch the video. Thanks 50sKid!
your keeping my past aunt my past mother in laws 330i going for my daughters daily driver with lots of family history. going strong thank you soso much
Great video that makes one thing very clear: the person who designed this system was a terribly evil man.
I guess every engineer has a bad day. But car companies are supposed to have multiple engineers checking each other's work.
Holy shit is that ccv system a pain in the ass. Thinking of going to do a delete.
I, have to agree w/u...that's my task for next weekend...I'm worried couse I got 0 patience..I got to make sure there's not a single type of igniting fluid, lighters or matches wile I'm working on this project.
I couldn't agree more, really bad design, and a PITA to change!
Don’t forget the guy that decided the location of the starter 😂 now that’s a evil man
Hi 50s Kid, just want to say your guides are legendary and have helped me massively. Everything I know I've learned from your vids. But I need to point out that when I inserted the dipstick tube like you have in this video, it wasn't fully inserted! The dipstick moved in as you tightened the nut, and the same was for me, this gave me the wrong dipstick reading by a full quart. I had to come back to this job and bash the bracket of the tube down with a hammer untill the mounting plate was exactly over the bolt hole, when tightening the bolt this time it was perfectly flush and did not move. My oil reading came back to normal and all is well again. Anyway Thanks for the content!
I finally did this procedure myself on my e46. Not by choice but necessity. I have come to one solid conclusion after doing this. I now know exactly why they lost that damn war! I must add this however, your instructions helped immensely.
Panther vs T34 is another working example too.
This is a really awesome tutorial - I’ve watched several others of this job and I couldn’t follow all the details. Great job.
2005 X3 just about the same with a few small differences...
I literally just finished doing this whole job....If it wasn't for your precise and crystal clear instruction and all, I would have never been able to pull this off!
Been working on all my own cars for years but this video series just made this almost a cuss free job!!!
Thanks!!!
THANK YOU! I successfully got the ccv replaced and I'm new to car repair!
This guide has been a godsend for me while doing this job! That bit about rotating the little curved pipe downward to connect to the valve assembly then swivel up through the manifold was especially helpful as there is literally NO ROOM under there at all to push it on with your fingers! It was a bit of an awkward job but well worth doing - My E39 is now idling smoothly, and it seems to have fixed the random misfire and hesitant throttle response I was having too.
There is many other videos on how to do it, but only Yours gave me the courage for it. I did it yesterday on my e60 525i m54 engine with succes. Thank You!
If ever we needed someone to cut the right wire on a bomb .. you’re the right bloke 50sKid
very patient , controlled & relaxed .. it’s a lesson for us. 🙌🙏
Thanks for putting this video together - it really really helped me. I did my son's E46 while I was replacing the Oil Filter Housing Gasket. This gave me lots of room. I did figure out that if I marked the hose (that gets rotated) and the CCV housing in the assembled condition, I would know I had it installed correctly when I did it on the car.
This Video saved my cross country roadtrip, followed all the steps and got it done in couple of hours. Great stuff! Can't thank you enough!
Thanks for sharing!🤙🏽 After watching part 1&2 about 10 times I finally feel confident enough to solve this puzzle! I live in Alaska so I'm replacing my old ccv to a winter one on my 03' 325xi
And yet again you've saved me a ton of money with a super helpful, well explained, and just perfect guide for my E46 convertible. THANK YOU!
You’re very welcome
dealers trying to charge 900$ for this job. you are a god-send. thank you tons.
I recently bought an 03’ BMW E39 100k miles. Thanks for all the very detailed and great tutorials. You’ve helped me fixed/replaced al the work out parts.
Absolutely the BEST video on how to do this. However, I found that I don't have to loosen the dipstick tube. I was also replacing the leaking oil filter housing gasket so I had it all off which made all this a bit easier. Many thanks.
Almost done installing the cold weather kit. Much harder to install because of the insulation over everything so there is even less room to move, particularly in a freezing garage. I have to use a hairdryer to warm up the connectors or they won't snap in place. It sucks to be me this time but when I turn the key, and it all works, then I will forget all about the PITA it was so I'm thanking 50sKID now in case I forget later. Thank you 50sKID.
I’ve changed my ccv system successfully thanks to your videos !! I cant thank you enough! Also i bought the cold weather version and i couldnt fit the valve because of the rubber cover on the valve. Its a really tight fit. I just wanted to mention this so if anyone wants to buy the cold weather version expect it to be really difficult. The hoses are okay
Ugh, this!! I'm replacing mine with the same thing and I'm raging at the tight fit vs the old one.. Glad someone else feels my pain. Next time I have to do this, I'm gonna replace the intake manifold gaskets and just take the whole damn thing off lol
I had to take the cold weather cover off the seperator. God bless anyone who can get it installed. I snapped one of the screws putting it in because even the screw couldn't suck it into fit....
You’re awesome man! Finally someone who clearly shows all the steps clearly and the video quality is top notch
All of your videos are very informative. Everyone appreciates you making them. I hope to see you jump back on the paint works soon.
I just did this last week, you made it look easy. I ended up taking the intake off. The connections I struggled with literally took me 2 seconds after the intake was off. Another good video my friend. Thank you
Great Tutorial! Actually I started changing the CCV on my e46. As this work is not so easy, I decided to do it on several days. The idea of how to get the first hose through the hole and then rotate it to get it connected to the CCV is awesome. I did it like this and I was suprized how fast I got it in place. But I added just a small detail to help me beeing sure that the hose is perfectly connected: I market the starting and the final position (after rotation) of the hose on the CCV (with a marker). Now I have to continue with the rest of the hoses.
Just wanted to stop by and say thank you ... I did the ccv done in 2 hrs... thanks for the tip on twisting the pipe onto the ccv... save me a big pain in the ass
This is great stuff. Good lighting and camera work to capture some really difficult views of this job. I very much appreciate it! Thank you so much!
Thank you for this. Currently raging at my bmw because I am replacing mine with the cold weather one and the fit is super tight. Your videos give me faith that I'm doing the right things. Next time I'm doing this at the same time I'm doing the intake manifold gaskets 🤦♀️make my life easier. Thank you for the tips
thanks a lot for the video. I was able to complete the repair today. Advice to people: Budget a lot of time if you're a novice. It took me probably 10 hours over 3 days. (Most of it trying to get the intake boot off, whoever installed it last had the hose clamps facing an awkward direction). The hardest part of the repair is definitely the curved tube at 4:45. Before installing, play with the hose (attach and detach) until you're familiar with the mounting orientation - seriously play with it for at least ten minutes. Feed the hose through the top of the intake manifold, and get it so it is touching the separator. Then you'll need to tilt the hose down ("away" from you if you're bending over the driver's side) while tilting the separator towards you. If you memorized the orientation of the hose you'll know if you're close to the angle needed to attach the hose. Once attached, twist up to lock it in place.
Interestingly, the step you say is hardest, the hose at 6:30, was actually really easy for me.
Thank you! This is the best CCV replacement video on CZcams!
Great job of explaining, not blocking the camera, having sufficient light and not going off on unnecessary tangents. You made me a believer and a fan.
Excellent instructional video. Also on a side note, when there are multiple connectors with the same number of contacts and shell body size you will see that they are all keyed. You can note the two different keyed bodies of the connectors at 14:03 and at 14:09 as you point out the connector you will note the keyed external tab on the body of its mate. You cannot mate the wrong connector even if you tried.
A suggestion and some praise. First echoing the positive from below. Thanks for the efforts. I just did this and thanks for the help it made all the difference. I did discover one thing. I pulled the 2 bolts for the Power Steering reservoir and moved it toward the headlight as well as the bracket that holds the electronics box. its just 4 extra screws but opened up a ton of room making getting to all those plugs and hoses so much easier. Keep up the good work and detail you've truly made a difference with my E46 330CI experience.
Worked great - thanks. Much easier than removing the intake.
I put some white correction fluid on the hose and the CCV to get the orientation right before I turned to lock - Also had to remove the lower bolt for the Vanos oil line as I kept catching on that, and also took the bracket for the purge valve off so I had a clearer view, but this is a LOT easier than removing the intake.
My dumb mistake for this job - Forgot to put the dipstick in before the intake boot!
I think the only reason to remove the intake to do this is if you changing those hard coolant lines behind, which I did on my other car last time I did this.
Thank you for your videos! They`re great! I just changed the CCV these days, bought the updated cold weather part. The hardest part was fitting the twist on hose to the valve unit, but with your instructions in mind, soon enough, it all went along just fine. The top of that same hose, went on the manifold with quite a bit of force, as it would not line up otherwise. I found fitting the insulated ccv pretty straight forward, then I cut a little of the foam off, just around the area where the ccv meets the throttle body, to allow it to seat properly. The dipstick went back on pretty easy, after a good clean of the bottom section, to make shure there is no sludge in between the walls, a little bit of engine oil around it, where the new o-ring goes does help slide it up to the groove. Clean the throttle body and ICV while you`re in there, and try to remember the position of the intake boots, so you don`t undo them again. Looking into doing the VANOS repair next. All the best!
This was very good advice, you indeed need to cut the foam/insulated thing off of the cold weather separator to fit the throttle body, otherwise it would be almost impossible to fit it.
Bro just letting you know that you are the BMW E46 mechanic savior lol. Sure appreciate everything and the way you describe the necessary steps unlike everyone else not getting to the point. Hit me up Id love to go over a couple things.
2004 BMW 325i 330i and 2009 M3 owner
Thanks bro. I'm sure this is exactly what's going on with mine. I'm gonna do it tomorrow.
Thanks, you are most patient human on CZcams
This works with the X5 E53, with a few minor differences. Thanks 50sKid.
Very nice set of instructions Jason. And fantastic close-up camera work. Thanks!
When I did my M52TU a few years ago, I got lucky with the twist on tube. It just went right in.
Took me a good 9 hours to do cause I took my time on it thanks for these helpful videos it saves me lots of money
If you heat that after-market plastic tube with a hair dryer you can get your 90 deg. hold at 90 until it cools a bit
Brilliant tutorial 👍Absolutely fantastic. I have an e39 530i black.
I have a hole in the right angle that goes to the valve cover . The car has thrown an EML, weak idle, sounds like a misfire and I've had a look an I've found this hole on the underside of that right angle an praying that doing this ccv project will sort this car straight out.
Once again brilliant 👍
Excellent vid.......changed my CCV today. I did put some oil on the rings before seating to make the connection easier.
Brilliant video. Thank you from New Zealand. I will do our 523i this weekend.
What up 50sKid thank you for this video good sir, this will help me out a lot. you learn something new every day, you made this line be real for me today i appreciate the time you took to make this. very helpful and informative all at once.
I replaced mine with a catch can (thanks to your instruction) and couldn't be happier. Works great!
I'm in Canada so not sure about the laws there. 50's kid would know though.
ninjadude2000 I need
Thanks mate. Allredy 2 ccv changed from your video .
I enjoy watching your step by step on your video process. I learn a lot how to replace Pcv system. I have bmw 528i 1999 needs to replace Pcv system and temperature coolant sensor, new hose for vaccum system. Thank you for your wonderful vlog.
Massively helpful videos. Knew exactly what parts would trip people up, and explained them well. Not a horribly difficult task after watching.
Excellent video with super camera angles and lighting of repair. Also, nice job explaining what needs to be done in detail.
Awesome video as always. Keep it up! I like how you showed how all of the parts go together outside of the car and the little tips and tricks to get them to go back together.
This guys is literally a fuhgin life saver! My 2003 325xi (275K Miles) and myself THANK YOU!!
Amazing Step-by-Step!!! This vid is some of the best i have ever seen. Quite Detailed, thorough, and super informative. 50's kid should be working for Chilton, Hanes, or Bentley. 2 Thumbs Up👍👍
Mr you are a awesome human I got not word to thanks personally I appreciate it for teaching us god bless you
Thanks again for really good video.
This is the style i do replace M54 CCV systems. As long you replace all hoses, and know which is the correct way to remove/install new hoses it is not so difficult as someone says.
Helped me to secure the hoses eaisly in a super tight places. Thanks jason ur the man
You know your fricken amazing thank you for all the knowledge I recently purchased my 1st bmw being mechanical inclined and your videos combined HAVE SAVED ME THOUSANDS thank you so much 😊
Great job! Helps ALOT now I don’t have to pay someone to do it for me thanks to your videos.
Your videos are very informative. Saved me around $1,500 in shop fees.
Thank you for patiently explaining everything so well.
I would strongly suggest pouring warm/hot diesel into the dipstick return "branch" while it is off the car, to make 100% sure it is not clogged - it is a very thin "double skin" that can be VERY difficult to unblock... I'm talking compressed air and SERIOUS solvents.
thanks for very informative videos this is the is best video for working on my 328ci 2000 , I need to replace bad cooling hoses , you take your time to explain everything real nice , thanks again
Thanks very much!!! very well done - 2004 330ci. I especially like all you fine details - it made the job very enjoyable.
THANKS for this! Would not have been able to do the job without it!
With the cold weather version, it is REALLY cramped and hard to connect those pipes/tubes.
I have just watched part one and 2 and that was super helpful full marks for that thanks
Designed to make money, they know most people won’t know or touch shit like this! Great work!
I believe the torque spec you're referring to in your video is the German standard of "guten tight".
Nice job explaining this step by step.
50 Kid you're the man still......
Amazing !! Very informative, after watching both videos you will know everything you need to get this job done.
Hey, Just wanted to say a huge thanks for this video, did it yesterday! :)
Hi, could You tell me how long did it take you to do it?
K Mosionek I took my time, really didn’t want to fuck it up, hate working on engine stuff. However overall it took about 3 hours. But I also rebuilt the DISA valve while I was there. This video was so helpful!
Thanks for answer mate
You are the E46 King! 👑 Love your videos Sir.
Thanks a lot for making and sharing all these great videos. I learned a lot from it. Your effort is highly appreciated!
Just did this job. I followed this video step by step. Could not have done it with out this video.
Thank god for this guy
my car still smokes a slight bit any solutions? btw great video im 18 and was able to do this with the help of the video
Great video. Hardest part is getting the new lines to snap in. They need something. Line that goes up to the intake seems to be too short to snap in. My 2003 lines just snapped off while trying to remove. Very weak and poor design.
ok so on the 2 connectors that look the same you said something about prongs? nevermind that. each one is slotted with one being in the middle and the other one off to the side. super simple with just a glance.
All videos are great!! I think i have that problem in my N42B20A, but not sure is the same process! I'll be thankfull with a bit help from you!! ✋👍
Best video for A ccv job!! Thanks
Many thanks for this great and clarifying video :) Very helpful for my E46 328 Ci too :)
Very clear and detailed. Thank you The Best videos are yours E46 M54 Give you 5- Stars Appreciate you!!
Nice camera footage.
I love you. Thank you for taking the time and making this video!
This is going to be so much fun!
Hey I love your videos, thanks to you I’ve saved thousands! I have one quick question... what make is your inspection lamp? I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find the same model
Best vids on the subject...thanks, man!
Exelent video, amigo God bless you.
quick question for you there 50sKid. Got my first e46 a week ago as a project car (all previous bmw's have been e36 with M42, M44 & M50 motors. The guy i bought it from has the vacuum system completely jimmy rigged so i wanted to know... The hose from the suction pump that goes under the intake manifold, what does it connect to?
You're a good man, brother.
Great video. I’ll be using this to help me when I film doing mine.
Amazing watching your videos.
Love your videos man wish you were my buddy get my ccv done by you looks really complicated and I'm from UK???
#1, Thank you, #2 regarding check valve. I believe it will work once a vacuum is applied. It needs negative pressure to work. What size fit in the tube? 12mm? or 14mm???
Just did this, and pls pls pls make sure to get genuine bmw parts for this. Terrible fitment with these SKP ones from RockAuto it’s really biting me in the as now.
I just want to thank you so much for these videos! Really helped out!
