The P0171 and P0174 codes will plague every owner of an E46 or E39 BMW at some point in their lives. So, 99 times out of 100 they are caused by a vacuum leak and on the M54/M52 engine there are a few common causes of vacuum leaks. So common that I'd say 95% of cases will be covered by what I go over in this video. I also talk about what a vacuum leak is, how a MAF sensor works, and so on.
One thing I don't cover in this video is how to test your oxygen sensors to see if they are working. I will do that in a future video.
Please also take a look at these other videos I've published:

Man I'm a mechanic myself and your videos have helped me so much with my car. Thank you very much for your time of making them. A lot of people including myself are new to BMW's and you help ALOT man.
You are one of the finest teachers I have come across and I used to be one. Such clarity of logic and sequence of causation is a gift. With greatest appreciation, please keep this ability going strong!
thank you very much for the compliment, I will.
I agree completely. Very crisp and definitive, logical flow to all.
I just started throwing a P0174 too. Smoke test was good, MAF was clean, recently rebuilt my DISA. All the usual stuff was good. Turned out to be the air pump control valve and gasket. So keep that in your diagnostic arsenal for future reference. And it's an easy fix/replacement too (beside the exhaust manifold near the front).
Thanks! It cost me 20.00 to fix my leak following your method, the stealership wanted $140.00 just to look at it.
I was about to say the same thing lol
Lol at stearlership 😂😂😂

CZcams should have invented a DONATE button on every video. Why is this not done yet? Why would you not donate a buck or two for a good video that helped you? Some videos make money by views but most usefull videos don't get that many views but are gold to those who need it.
i know you wrote this 3 years ago but this guy has saved people thousands in labor costs and giving even 5 bucks would make his day and wont effect youre life much at all... i do agree there should be donate button on every video because most useful ones are not getting much views unless people need to find out "how to" something
yes agree it wouldn’t be greedy i personally feel the need to atleast shoot a couple bucks
Sorry to be so offtopic but does any of you know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?
I somehow lost the login password. I would love any help you can offer me.

What a delight to have someone explain the principles and image the locations clearly enough for me to do a proper diagnosis. Thank you.
You are Hands Down The Best instructor Ive seen in years -
You make trust worthy eye contact somehow and you can easily sense you know your shit.
The way you describe or note any relevant details, tips or cautions with detailed why's are very much needed to create a solid longterm memory.
You should instruct in tech college or an automotive school. One that pays what you are worth.
Video and sound guy ~excellent job as well.
TY for Being and Doing.
thanks so much man!
@@50sKid hey man thanks for the video. Hearing a sucking noise from around the intake manifold. Not sure if it is normal but. Would a bad disa ring cause this?
exactly what i was going to say
I love how you clearly explain things big plusss.... Deff subscribing
Super underrated videos mate! Your CCV one was great, this one too!
Picked up my first BMW a week ago... Totally different from my old Pontiacs and Jeep's. Found more problems than I expected, getting better thanks to your videos. Great job appreciate em.
Thank you for your much appreciated time and effort in producing these videos. I'm that personality type that needs to know how things function to fully understand the purpose and vice versa. Simple questions and answers don't quite cut it for me, as there's always a "why?". Needless to say, your videos have helped me immensely! Funny thing is I'm around guys who know a whole hell of a lot more about cars than I ever will and half the time they can't help me for crap!
After watching numerous youtube video's of a similar issue, this is the most informative & clear. Really helpful & thanks for sharing.
Agree! I have a similar video on my channel but 50skid is a real pro!
My go to CZcamsr for anything on my 325i👌🏻
He really is. I always look for him first.
Is there a trick to getting the bottom hose off, both clamps are kinda blocked and there’s a rip in it, or do I gotta remove that brick looking piece in the way?
You make some of the most well thought out, complete, and understandable how-to car repair videos on CZcams. I will use this later to diagnose the codes on my '05 325i. Thank you.
Your Character!... Your compassion, Your love, your crystal voice simply made you one of the best coaches around... You are a born giver... keep up the good work and may God bless....
LOL, thanks very much.
Dude you have officially made it to the top 5 people I’m going to for engine specifics! You are so knowledgeable! Thank you for the video!
your videos are amazing. they have helped me bring an 323ci back from the dead. from check engine issues to trans issues and fluid filling. thanks again
This was excellent dude, thank you! Such a good explanation of the M54 vacuum system. For anyone wondering, this information also applies to 2004-2006 BMW X3 E83.
Excellent video. For the other 5% of cases, there are also three less common o-ring failures you might want to check before buying a new MAF: Dipstick tube upper o-rings (x2), fuel injector lower o-rings (x6), air distribution piece o-rings (x6).
Also, if you have a 330 then you have a vacuum actuated exhaust. This is a 3.5 mm line that runs down from the back of the intake manifold to a vacuum canister and through the firewall to the rear of the car.
There is also the throttle body gasket and idle control valve grommet, which may leak if reused and not seated properly, respectively.
Finally, if your lean codes are set at highway speeds rather than idle then it is more likely to be a soft failing MAF than a vacuum leak.
clabcon Interesting. The dipstick tube O-rings you refer to are on the dipstick itself, rather than the tube it goes into, correct?
50sKid Yes, the dipstick upper o-rings are on the dipstick rather than the guide tube. There are two of them measuring 9 x 2.22, which is smaller than the lower o-ring that goes around the dipstick guide tube and sump. My upper o-rings were not leaking, but looked worn and flat compared to the plusher new ones and offered greater resistance to removing the dipstick from the guide tube i.e. a better seal. Obviously if you do not check your oil weekly like me, then your upper o-rings will be less worn. It is always good practise to replace the lower o-ring when pulling the dipstick guide tube. For proper installation, lubricate the new o-ring and put on the dipstick guide tube. I have heard they can easily tear and give you a vacuum leak if you put them on the sump and force the guide tube into place. Tolerances are tight so it may take you 30 mins of wiggling to properly seat the new o-ring even when lubricated.
clabcon Yeah pulling that dipstick weekly'll sure do it! Mine sticks in that tube like an SOB and I gotta pull hard on it. I've got about 170k miles on my car and the dipstick tube o-ring was in quite good shape--I replaced it in my CCV videos that I recently did "just cuz," but it honestly was just fine. I think it all depends on if you've gone and left the o-ring in the pan and tried to shove your dipstick tube in that way. But, to anyone reading these comments, Harbor Freight sells a pack of Metric o-rings for $5 and it has the proper size.
50sKid Almost 120k miles here and I have the revised design single walled dipstick guide tube. The damb dipstick snags on a ridge in the bottom and has to be rotated 180 degrees to remove! I think the second batch of these was made in China instead of Germany...
" if you have a 330 then you have a vacuum actuated exhaust. This is a 3.5 mm line that runs down from the back of the intake manifold to a vacuum canister and through the firewall to the rear of the car."
Ah, interesting - the pipe is well cracked on the end of my one where it connects to the exhaust. Suppose it's worth me cutting that off a bit and getting a better seal (or just popping a screw in it, etc - my exhaust butterfly is completely seized so it's not doing anything) before I start tearing the engine bay apart....
50s Kid- you rock! You helped me a lot by doing this video, since I learned where to look to fix a big vacuum leak(s). I just got done replacing my DISA valve and also repaired a crack in the lower boot (just used electric tape around the crack so I wouldn't have to wait to get a replacement boot). Car runs great now.
Thanks a lot for this video. I had just got out of the hospital when my grandsons 2001 325xi started giving him p0171/p0174 codes. I took all the hoses I could get to off and looked for vacuum leaks. I had even taken the intake runner out to get better access to look for other leaks! Didn't know enough to look at the gasket at the time. I only knew that when I sprayed brake fluid into the general area of the intake, I could occasionally get the engine to go rich for a while. It was so tight an area that it was hard to locate exactly where the spray was impacting the leak. I almost gave up and had the car taken to a shop to be smoked when I ran across your video. One viewing of your video and I knew it was the seal on the intake runner. Borrowed an incorrect sized seal from my neighbor and managed to prove it was leaking(couldn't quite get the intake runner shoved back into it's slot-but the seal held). Have ordered a new seal and will be in next week. In any case, your video was instrumental in my fixing his car. BTW, I too broke a rubber housing taking it apart(ironically, BMW had that housing in stock for $22 but wanted $400 for the intake runner because they didn't sell the seal by itself! Thanks again!
The dreaded codes for all BMW owners. Solid video, thanks for sharing your experience with identifying the sources of leaks.
Looking forward to more of your BMW videos!
Great video! I suspected a vacuum leak but it ended up being a completely failed DISA valve (O-ring was fine) on my 2004 330xi. Replacing that should fix my P0171 and P0174 codes along with random misfires. This video saved me a lot of time. Thank you for taking the time to make this video! Keep up the good work!
Did replacing the DISA valve fix your problem? Im about to replace mines
Dude, you're a hero. I've owned my 325Ci for 7 years, and you've helped me through a lot of jobs. Just had these codes pop up in the last month and need to have a look around. Hopefully it's one of the easier problems to fix, I've put off the CCV for so long. 145,550 miles probably on the original CCV!
I've used a number of your videos to help me out several times. Very clear explanation, very matter-of-fact, very informative. Thank you. I discovered a sneaky air leak... When rebuilding my DISA valve I noticed that the seal on the actuator arm was badly damaged. This is easy to overlook and is not included in the repair kit and leaks a lot of air. I purchased a standard oil seal 22mm dia, 12mm shaft, 6mm thick to fix this.
seriously dude.... I wanna ship you a fucking 12 pack. My BMW has been running like shit for years... So much so I was gonna sell it... I fixed everything.... MAF, all the hoses, all the boots, the Disa.... Never knew about the oil separator hose... You made my car start back up like normal, after 2 hours of trying to get the damn stupid ass BMW connector off, hate those black squeeze ones... EFFIN A++++++.
Thanks!
I'm in the exact same boat at the minute, going to check those plastic hoses when I get a minute.
50sKid hi have a 318i e46 with p0171 code. it's a m43 engine and im located in France and it gives "problems de transmission du carburant". I need help
I have a feeling this is going to be me
This video is just what i was looking for . Is Tons of Help .
Thank you .
I just Got my DISA valve O ring Gasket. Installing tommorow
And cleaning the Maf air flow sensor . Might aswell.
Thanks for an excellent and concise vid. I was able to detect the cause of my vacuum leak on my 2005 BMW Z4 2.5i thanks to you. I bought the whole kit and had everything replaced by an independent BMW guy.
You are the man! Did a temporary fix to one of the hoses until I get a replacement for it. Never thought some of them would get brittle like that. This video is very helpful! Thanks again!
great video. One thing you can do to find leaks faster is to attach a glove on the intake boot and attach a hose to the glove. Then i used an electronic cigarette to blow some smoke through the hose i attached to the glove and i found my lower boot and the disa o ring was leaking.
This might be a stupid ? , do you do this with the car on, just idling or with the car off?
Car off!!!
Please do a video!
Crazy! I just did this the other day. Only thing I did different was I took the f connector off, stuck a straw in the intake boot, and started puffin
Having some difficulty with my e46 with a rough and weird idle. I diagnosed it and it came back as these codes. Im having a tough time finding the leak.
What did you end up doing to it
Having the same issue rn
Many thanks for a very useful video. My 1999 Z3 2.3 was throwing "O2 sensor adaption limit" codes (as per my Peake R5 FCX3 scan tool). Using this video I was able to quickly isolate the problem as a hole in the lower intake boot which was creating a colossal vacuum leak. I replaced all of the intake boot parts, cleared the codes, and all is now well.
My P0171 and P0174 problem was a DISA unit. I replaced DISA and checked every things else as your video. The car is running so far so good. Thanks!
53 dislikes? really? probably all from disgruntled stealerships, the game is to be told not sold.
Appreciate the support. It just comes with the territory, someone is always going to click dislike. ;-)
Awesome video. Very informative without getting bogged down in the details. You may have just saved me a ton of money. Half a millions views -- this vid has probably saved millions of dollars in needless repairs. Great job man. Subbed.
dude, your videos are amazing! you've helped me so much throughout this e46 journey so much! keep it up man! you awesome!
This is one of the best vids on this issue bar none. I can tell you are a software developer for sure! Thank you very much for helping us all. Jimbo
By far the best, most informative bmw videos I've viewed on youtube. Has help me immensely repairing vacuum leaks on my e39 m52tu.
You are the MAN!, thanks for your videos 50's kid. Add a donation link to your youtube page, you deserve some rewards for your good advice!!! i had this issue for years, sent my car to mechanics and kept changing sensors, and i gave up, until i saw your video. I followed steps by steps and got it fixed. I am not mechanic but you made it so easy, anybody can do it. I had vacuum leak on top air boot, my disa also was leaking and the bottom boot was also fixed with electrical tape!!!, i fix these 3 f(including the cabin filter) or less than 50 bucks!!!. Thank you for being around, we E46 fanatics will appreciate it.
this man will make you way more confident in trying do the work yourself and be comfortable doing so knowing you have got the best instruction to tackle any job. thanks bro
You have the best e46 repair videos. Thank you for what you do, man. i just got a 04 325ci that sounds like a vacuum cleaner sucking air, on start up. The guy I got it from, lacks the mental faculties to diagnose an untied shoe string. lol. So, I'm going to go through the entire car. These vids will help out greatly!
I’m so glad I came across your channel. Best e46 videos around. I’ve learned so much about my car
I just Donated 50 CENTS to this Video...JUST BY WATCHING IT...GREAT VIDEO..GREAT GUY...very Educated Video for BMW owners ....
I have these codes now and my valve cover just started leaking. I will have the gasket replaced on those, hopefully it will fix the issue but will still inspect for other culprit for vacuum leaks you mentioned here. Very informative. Keep it up!
youre videos have been so much help in my quest to get rid of my power loss rough idle issues. Thank you so much for taking the time to help and share your knowledge.
Very resourceful video. I have both of these codes on my e46 and now I am confident I can do this repair myself now.
i'm a new owner of 325i e46 from indonesia, i found your videos and this one is my fav. i have no experience about the engine, but you makes me confident to fix my own car. The most important, I'm not good in English but I can understand what you said even without subtitles. Thank you, brother.
A big thanks for your video here and the one about how to remove a bunch of key components. You guidance helped me diagnose the massive air leak in my lower air intake boot and another minor hose issue. Couldn't have done it without you. Thanks!
Nice, good going.
Had the codes. Lower intake elbow damaged. Thanks for the tutorial great work!! Your oil change video helped me loads as well. Annnnnnd your instruction on diagnosing a misfire and replacing spark plugs! Great videos.
Hoollllyyy smokes. This was the explanation i needed. In all honesty, this is making the fault deduction process way easier when its explained this way. The mechanics of how these systems operate. I just replaced my alternator and had to remove the air flow system to get to it, (sounded scarier than it axtually was) and aftet i placed everyhting back together, these 2 codes popped up the next day. 2 days after when i had time, i re-removed the air flow system again to make sure EVERYTHING was tightened back correctly, (and replaced my air box filter in the process) then the code dissapeared right after. Fast forward 5 days later, codes are back. So at least i know what im lookin at now after this videos details. TYSM 😊
Excellent - wish I had this handy about five years ago...when I stumbled through just these areas! Well done, and fine explanations
Fantastic! This is clear, intelligent, and very helpful in understanding the engine, and finding possible vacuum leak points around the engine. Thank you for you effort here.
Dude these videos are unbelievable helpful. Bless you bro for all the hard work and information you've given us!
This video is amazing, thanks for all the valuable info. I deep cleaned my air filter, air box, and tightened the intake boot to the MAF. I got these codes after driving my 2004 BMW X3 3.0i through some crazy muddy logging roads, puddles, mud. Can’t seem to get the codes to trip now. Definitely going to check the connection to the oil separator, I think mines broken. Have a shaky engine upon startup, and 700ish RPM at idle. Cleaned oil from underneath the oil separator today and didn’t even realize that could be the issue. Thanks for the video, seriously.
great video one of the most professional i have seen. Thank you.
Thank you, great video! I had both codes P0171 and P0174 for a few weeks now and finally found the reason to be number 3 on your video. Breather hose coming from oil separator/CCV to oil dipstick looked like it was trampled... Changed it and after that no fault codes referring to air leaks.
I kept getting those codes and I kept resetting them with my bluetooth scanner. I knew that it was some sort of vac leak due to the fact I would hear a whistle sound under acceleration. Now that I have time; I will be addressing these issues. Great informative video!
Let me just say Thank You, You are a great help! Keep the camera rolling and your mind speaking. BMW owner in Alabama...
+Paul Zapata Will do, thank you!
Best channel for e46 owner's ever!!
I really enjoy your videos and learn from them, keep up the good work!
Bro 5 years later your video is a life saver. I bought a wild shit project, tell me how I just went out and everything you just pointed out leaks.....
Many thanks, brother... I knew my E36, inside and out. Bought an '01 E46 325xi, and the M54 engine bay has me stumped at times. I want an original Owner's Manual, and the Bentley repair manual, but your videos have been SO HELPFUL
Such a fantastic breakdown homie. Concise, organized, and well-spoken. Thank ya !
Thanks to you I found the intake boot was torn at the places you said. Replaced it. So far so good. Thanks
Thank you so much for your detailed explanation. I am a female and don't know much on car repair. Your a godsend. Great job.
Dude, your video and explanation of everything is so awesome! I have an 04 330ci and though I;m not having an issue, This is just great info to have an consider. Infact, you made me think out an issue I have with my 01 f150 w/ 358k.mls Same codes, running to lean. With so many things replaced on my truck top wise, the head gasket makes so much sense after listening to you. Thank you!
The best video for explaining and diagnosing the problem! AWESOME
great vid just fixed my buddys e46, found the oil drain tube at the dipstick was cracked causing lean codes, cleared codes and no more problems thank you again!
One of the best oilseparator explanation video , thank you very much !!!!
Excellent information. I have owned my 2002 BMW 325csi since new, and am having the vacuum fault code occur regularly, and now a rough firing engine, with the fault code on my OBD reader indicating this problem. This is excellent information for me, and as I am a long time hobby mechanic, I will check out all the potential sources of the cause. Thanks again... ... Fortunately, my 1966 Lotus Elan does not have these type of problems.... Dual Web Carbs and "O" rings on the intake manifold are all that I have to check.... oh well !!!!
Thanks for the video, it was my oring that you showed and I also replaced the valve cover gasket, it was leaking. I could give you a hug. Goooood video.
50's kid- you are the best! Its great that I am able to back to this video after four years to get a refresher. Love my '05 330xi- had it since new. Now i just have to figure out whats causing the odd rattling sound coming out of the exhaust pipes on cold starts. not too worried cuz it goes awy when it warms up.... but....
Wonderful video and excellent explanation
Your video really is a eye opener on things to know about these engines so I appreciate your time with your food for the brain on e46 motor, thank you
you are very thorough with your explanation of everything. Thank you.
wow this is the most solid video I've ever seen! I was just searching cleaning maf but this covers alot of good stuff. thanks for the clear explanations and nice video quality. nice to be able to see everything youre doing without shakes or dark spots.
+Aaron Hunt thanks, bro
Had P0171 and 174 for the last 6 months... engine just started to idle horribly and starts to die if I don't let it idle until warm (while pushing the throttle above 1k RPMs because it's sitting around 500 RPM shoddily otherwise).
Replacing the DISA, ICV, and intake boot tomorrow using your videos. Thanks so much for such quality material.
Great video , Planning on getting a 330ci. Gonna do all the work my self if anything is needed, and your vids really help. Thank You
+TheMeChaNic55 Hopefully you've seen all the things you need to look out for. Especially the CCV system, right? Use that as your bargaining tactic (ie. oh man that's gonna cost a thousand dollars to get repaired at the BMW dealer), lol. That's what I did.
Very helpful thank you for this video my car has been having a rough idle and had fuel trim
Will do this tomorrow and check that bottom vacuum hose
I needed this video. Thank you so much for all of your videos!!
just would like to thank you for your videos, thanks
form a mechanically incline friend
this man makes the best videos because he teaches you the knowledge you need to diagnose the problem yourself the as best as possible without a professional
yet another great video, i dont go anywhere else for help after finding your channel. thank you
First of all, thanks for running more than excellent channel. On my euro spec (no aux air pump) e46 330ci, I had a whistling sound under partial load and occasional lean codes. I have since replaced my CCV, intake and throttle gaskets, intake hoses, checked the ICV and pligged ports, checked the brake booster line amd check valve, EVAP lines etc. Disa O-ring is tight. I smoke tested it with a glove over the MAF (which I also cleaned out with the designated spray) and it seemed al right, the nitrile glove even remained inflated. Still, I can hear a whistle under partial throttle/load and it will occasionally throw a lean code (both banks). Vanos was overhauled/resealed and valve cover gasket replaced at the same time. Oh, and both O2 sensors are new. I'm out of ideas, please chime in if you could. FPR vacuum lines maybe?
Hi 50s kid .. buying this 2004 3.25i for my kid has been quite an experience. going from GM to BMW was like swiching from APple to Anroid!! Here's an idea that worked for us to put the car in great condition .. you've never mentioned a smoke test .. but it sometimes would make sense. But I didn't want to do that because I thought of a simiar test .. I bough some 16 inch punk sticks. They are meant to make your house smell good .. but they generate a lot of smoke. I started the engine then moved the punk stick nes possible leak areas. In my case it was the Oil cap leaking. No doubt why it was leaking .. The ccv diaphragm was ripped before I bought it. With your video it was easy to find and fix .. but it must have been that way a long time because the oil cap gasket had a GIANT depression from being sucked in all the time. Thank you so much for the videos.
Awesome video very informative and helpful. Really appreciate it man!!!!
Just went through my E46 to fix a vacuum leak and update the ignition system at 141000 miles. After replacing the valve cover gasket, DISA valve, fuel injectors, and several vacuum hoses I still had a rough idle. I finally broke down and replaced the lower hose on the CCV and O-ring on the oil dipstick tube to finally get the vacuum leak fixed. Thanks for pointing out those parts as failure points. Maybe I should have started there first!
Great job 50'skid!!!! Keep then coming
This information is right on spot, This guy knows his stuff
HATS OFF TO YOU...THE BEST VIDEO IVE EVER WATCHED ON CZcams...
Very thorough video. Thanks for your time.
Great video, very informative, thanks for sharing
glad i found this...such a great presentation!
You explained everything so nice, I’ve had a issue where a plugged in MAF sensor makes car run rough and die after a while with a EVAP Large Leak, yesterday before this video I did a smoke test and found a leak by that little hose near the throttle body, fixed and still same code and it’s driving me nuts after I’ve replaced 75% of the items you’ve said. You did mention some other that I haven’t checked that I will definitely be checking now like the o ring on the oil stick!
So clear and informative. Great job .you are a great teacher I can say. Bravo and thanks
Wow! Incredibly helpful. Definately gave me a better idea of what to look for with the 'dredded' P0171 and P0174. Thanks. Just Subscribed.
nothin to say but... ur freekin awsume dude!!! freekin awsume!!! u have deep passion for helping others
This was a great car repair lesson .
I liked it a lot..
This guy is Seriously Amazing.!
Thanks for the reply. I managed to figure out the problem. Cleaned the ICV and that did the trick.
Thank you so much i recently got my engine leak fixed and then the same codes came up again
