From last season and some of the games this season, I already think Pep is thinking beyond Haaland. I feel as though Alvarez will be Man Citys next Aguero. He's the one that will be there for easily another decade and he will perform even better than what he currently is

Bernardo Silva was essentially playing the KDB role. That's why Grealish was undroppable at the important end of last season. Grealish's job was to draw players and freeing KDB.
Saw this coming with Citeh signing all the dribbly bois this summer in Kovacic, Gvardiol, Nunes, Doku. And I believe he got the idea from Gundogan leaving a giant hole in that team, as he was so instrumental to their success last season.
I also believe facing so many low blocks was part of why he went for the dribbly boys

I got mad durning the game seeing Gvardiol pass inside, when there's simple option of Grealish out wide. Now i see why. Thanks mate.
Honestly I saw a different shape. I saw three distinct units of three players holding their positions in the back, left flank, and right flank, with Haaland working alone as the tip of the spear. These triangles play much more within themselves and then once they generate space and draw defenders in, they distribute to another group or to Haaland to use the space created by that unit’s creativity. Numerical overloads in very specific parts of the pitch that constantly have better structure and attacking impetus than United’s defense could deal with.

James, its what Pep does, he knows people study his formations and tactics so he alters them every year. If you look at every year of his tenure their are subtle sometimes easily discernible changes in either formation, build up or personnel responsibilities both in game tactically or position based. The man is a genius ans is ALWAYS one step in front. Listen sometimes he tries things and they don't work but they are instantly altered if they don't achieve the desired outcome.
I think it was last season that we saw the true extend of pep's tactical greatness. He changed his formations 5 times. 5 TIMES!! All in a season! Then created a system that no one could cope with and had no answer to. While Arteta and many now are trying to have big physical pivots and strikers and inverted full backs, He started buying playing who can dribble in tight spaces and now this. If they are anywhere near the top of the table when kdb returns, They'll run away with the league.
Pep and Cryuff are two of the biggest reasons I’m proud to be a Barca fan.Their imprint on football evolution is just outstanding from other managers.(Sacchi is up there too)

Good analysis. To me, Pep uses Haaland's reputation as a goal scorer to distract / occupy the center backs attention which opens up space for City to exploit. It's like having an extra man on the pitch. Given Haaland's size, he's like two players anyway.
Some of that City football, slick passing, and continual movement at Old Trafford was exceptional, and an absolute joy to watch.

That's wild, I hate watching Pep's teams I feel like they suck out any sense unpredictability or uncertainty out of a match and that for me is what football is all about. I can appreciate what he does and his teams work so hard to be the well oiled machine that they are but I find it so dull to watch

This was implemented with the mahrez and KDB combination which where he will go round the outside of mahrez. Haunting the defence. This was KDB’s prime. Pep is trying this move on the opposite side. Looks like he’s brought back the old tactic back to life but with a lil tweaks.
If i remember corectly pep also use Mahrez and Kdb as a Second striker with halland

Pep’s genius:
1. 4.3.3 false 9
2. Buy GK who can play ball
3. Buy as many Left footed CB as you can
4. Play RB as a LB
5. Inverted Full backs
6. Inverted CB
7. Play all CB in your defense
8. Get rid of all the pacy wingers
9. False wingers
The reason why Silva plays this way is because Stones and Rodri are compact and cover zones correctly. All Silva has to worry about is creating offensive scoring options.

It’s crazy to think that statistically pep is the best manager to ever live and we can currently watch his beautiful football.
People may talk about how much he spends but I think pep is a genius of the game,it's not just who he buys but what he coaches he's just too good and those that always moan about his budget will realize this when he finally leave City
The Premier League was so behind Tactically that any tactic Pep re-uses is seen as a new revolutionized Tactic...The inverted wingback was the craze of last season 😂😅 but that role started way back at his Bayern days and he also rarely used it at Barcelona, it wasn't a new thing but to the Prem it was.
He did this when city lost 1-0 at spurs, sterling and grealish did this pattern, but they were not in sync
When others figured out what Pep thinks, Pep already knew they knew and counter that.

this is a great video and me as a city fan in to tactics highlights some things that i havent thought about, like the playersa standing on the lines to dribble in to the half space is really clever from you, it does make sense even if its not right, but the bernardo grealish partnership, the thing about gvardiol passing to bernardo first is really interesting, but the isolating grealish then overlapping with beranrdo, we have done that to an extent before, especially wwith mahrez and de bruyne last season, were de bruyne often made the half space run to drag the fullback to isolate mahrez with all the space cut in and attacked the fullback to then have de bruyne come back around and overlap around the same position as berarndo to then played the pass across the back post cross or a cutback, but again, great video

As a city fan, I’ve watched this team change slightly every year. Pep has actually taken a page out of De Zerbi’s book and made it better in his way. The way we make the pass at the right time is so similar to Brighton last year. The Walker-Foden combo is also so good on the other side. Sometimes Walker playing RCB and other times he’s so high and wide. The same “false winger” style tactic on the right side but it’s also so different.

Bro someone needs to show this to Ten Hag. Imagine with shaw in the gvardiol role, ive seen shaw drive into midfield before, with bruno occupying the silva role on the left of midfield, leaving rashford to cut inside all the time or on the right with mount and antony, especially since antony is only kinda effective exclusively on his left foot cutting inside and curling. Idk sounds like a fun proposition.

I think the little adjustment that everyone talk that pep made. Last season haaland just stay close to goalkeeper. He is big but not much he can do. But in order to use haaland aerial ability i think pep adjust haaland to move side post if other position ripe for a cross header. So even with haaland record last year pep still able to improve haaland chance to score more goals

It's so simple in the eyes. I would wonder why other opposition teams don't move like that in the top corner of the box. But only, it's not simple. 😅 To force the opposition to fit within the width of the box so as to execute the move is only easy in theory.

I won’t be satisfied as a City fan until Pep does the fales goal keeper tactic by just having Ederson scoring bangers
During Pep's final season as Bayern Munich manager, he wanted to play Manuel Neuer as a midfielder but the Bayern board intervened because it would be disrespectful to the opposition. But at City, the board rarely interferes with Pep's work. So we might see Ederson as an on-field player at some point, probably in Pep's fInal season as Man City manager, whenever that might be.
Pep knows how important it is to keep evolving to retain the PL or any league title. All it takes is generally one season for a new style to be found out, Brighton for example. Pep just keeps evolving his style and other managers cant help but follow it. By the time they get a hang of it, Pep has already moved on to something new.

So basically Pep played Silva, in his version, at LB. Which isn't actually unusual.
Bernardo Silva's average position is that of the inverted LB we are used to seeing. His heat map suggests he made some overlapping runs as a LB.
If you look at Zinchenko's average position and heat map against West Ham, it is similar. The reason I suggest to look at Zinchenko, is because Arteta and Pep have philosophically similar approaches.
I like the stuff James, but I think this might be a bit of over analysis. Nonetheless, I am in agreement that Pep is a genius.

Ive been doing this since fm22 with 2 cms who can both cross. 1 as a Mezzala, other as an inverted winger. The Mez overlapping causes chaos

I think in Liverpool's last game against Nottingham Szobo and Salah had a very similar partnership.
Everyone expects Salah to cut in on his left, and they swarm him, creating ACRES of space for Dom to run to the byline.
Whether it was an overlap or underlap, Dom was providing what Trent used to down that right side.
He had TEN crosses, 4 key passes, 2 big chances created and 3/4 successful dribbles.
Heat maps for Grealish, Silva, Dom, and Salah all look very similar with the "8s" over and underlapping and the "winger" providing width, cutting inside to the corner of the 18, before distributing and laying balls of to the overlapping "8s."

Have you ever thought about coaching youth football? I know you are busy with youtube but I think it would be a great experience for yourself as well as a lot of fun. Maybe not now but maybe something to consider in the future? One to think on.
As a City fan feel Peps progressive build Backfires when they can't score early o first half, chasing the game till 80',90' opponent team attack will attack hard conceding atleast one which leads to draw o loss
I think whatever improvised tactics or technical Pep is implementing, City will struggle to get past the likes of Liverpool, Spurs and the Gunners. These 3 teams always know how to dismantle Pep's Man City. Fourth place this season for Man City. Next season they will bounce back.

one thing i want to add is your take on stones being a decoy, i think depending who man city plays he isnt much of a decoy. for an example of what i mean, is the second leg of champions league semi final against real. first goal from bernardo silva came from silvas run and stones run which stones recieved that ball, reshuffled to de bryune and de bryune found bernardo 1- 0 and the rest is history. great content tho glad i found this video

Hi James, I’ve noticed that Liverpool have already been doing this with the combination between Salah and Szobozlai (see Nunez goal against Forest). The amount of players City are able to get into the box however as you pointed out is amazing and could be the thing that sets them apart from the rest.

Wont say that this is something new in the pl! Newcastle has been doing this in a lot of games this season... on the right side with Longstaff/Almiron (Almiron playing as a 10 at Atlanta before he came to newcastle). Longstaffs goals against PSG and Crystal Palace a clear example of this. Also on the left with Gordon/Anderson (Anderson natural position beeing left or right wing). and Gordon/Joelinton (Gordon played as a false 9 with England at the u21 euros, Joelinton has been playing as a winger and inside forward at Hoffenheim) at times. Heck they even did this last season, an example beeing the 6-1 game agains tottenham. Where Joelinton and Willock where switching all the time, Joelinton coming inside and Willock going out left in the channel.
Thats true but also Pep used to do this style 4 seasons ago with KdB, Mahrez & Aguero..... He then stopped & rarely uses it since.... But good eye for noticing..
How is this different from a regular overlap? is it just unique cause its the "8" thats doing it? To me it just seems like using an old tool because people are getting used to the new tool you've been using.

I dont think Pep has ever believed in any specific formation... He just knows how to adjust to situations and creat formations that serve his players best. I guess due to him having to rely on playwrs like Bernardo Silva and Foden, he probably has no choice but to use inverted wingers on the right.
