- Have you ever wonder why the Ethiopian bible is different when compared with the rest of the world? This video attempts to answer just that question!
Although an official council of Jamnia may not have existed, there was no doubt conversations taking place around this period about the cannon of the Bible.
In Ethiopia there are many paintings of "black" Jesus and yet most of the popular images used are that of the European (i.e. while) Jesus. This may have to do with the impact of Western influence on the region.
According to early Christian tradition, the authors of the gospels were indeed believed to have been written by these same individuals. But modern day scholars now believe it may have been written by others.
So King James only have 66 books while the Ethiopian (African) Coptic Bible is 81.
But most Black people in the West receive Christianity during and after slavery and most Africans by European colonialism we both get the King James Bible or the Catholic Bible. But parts of Africa like Sudan, Egypt, Carthage (Tunisia), Eritrea and Ethiopia was Christians before all of Europe.
Blame Islam! I firmly believe that but for Islam Africa would be Coptic and Ethiopian Orthodox Christian. The slave trade in the West most likely would never have happened.

@@collinhenry9996 The Ethiopian Catholic Church has 81 books.The Eastern Catholic Rites like my Byzantine Catholic Rite include 3 Maccabees and 4 Maccabees.The original 1611 KJV Bible had all of the books and in the 1800's the British Bible Society removed 7 books from their OLT canon.

I have had the wonderful pleasure of befriending Ethiopian families in Springfield, Missouri in 1990 and Kansas City in 2012. Both times I enjoyed dinner and long evenings chatting with Ethiopian Orthodox priest. Very holy man. Great respect to your church and traditions from your Russian Orthodox brother!

@@Trailblazer_music wow very nice , I've been trying to find someone to talk with about what you said and in fact you know more about all this than me , about 5 years ago I found out about the letter J being added to the alphabet and when I found this out I found more , they translated His Name 3 different times the first time they translated His Name was to Iesous then to Iesus then to Jesus and this blew my mind away big time , in Acts 4 vs 12 it says there's no Salvation in no other; there's no other name given under Heaven given to mankind for us to be saved , then I started thinking about how they put The LORD instead of Our Heavenly Father's Name so I prayed to our Heavenly Father and asked Him to show me what His Name is and I heard a voice in my right ear saying learn It and I was like what and then it hit me learn Hebrew alphabet so I looked up the Hebrew alphabet and a lady was showing the letters and meaning and showed how to do the vowels and as I was writing all this down my remote quit working I thought it was my batteries but I pressed a button and it went off of what I was watching so I thought ok let's go to Hebrew text , now I got down to number 11 in the alphabet before my remote quit working and I got to the first word and I was looking at my paper with what I had written down and I saw the first letter was an A but didn't know what the second letter was because I wasn't down enough in the alphabet so went to the 3 rd letter and it was a D then looked at the second word and was going to say the letter but what came out of my mouth brought tears to my eyes and as I'm writing this I've got chill bumps and this is what I said , Yehovah , and that's what I call the name of Our Heavenly Father , then everything was coming to me from The Holy Spirit to me like God , a god is created but Our Elohim was not created then I looked up our Savior's Name in Hebrew and what I found out His Name was Yehoshua , Hamachiach means our Messiah but His Full Name is Yehoshua Hamachiach Emanuel of Nazareth then I found out that The Holy Spirit has a Name as well and it is Ruarch Hakodesh and your right about what The LORD means and yes that's calling to baal so now I don't say Lord I say Adonai and in Jeremiah chapter 23 Vs 27 our Heavenly Father Yehovah Elohim said they would change His Name to Baal and they did and now I know you're going to think I'm crazy but I was led to the truth of the mystery of the Gospels and now I'm on a quest and it won't be long till I really do as our Savior did but I know that when the time is right at the appointed time and place I'll here our Heavenly Father say here I am , sorry I wrote so much but I had to tell someone and I thank you for reading my message , I'm hoping to hear back from you my friend , may you be blessed with the knowledge and understanding of the Gospels

Ethiopia orthodox church...have its own calendar system...its own numbering system...its own language...its own alphabetic system...Ethiopians are mentioned in the bible even...the oldest and full bible is found in Ethiopia orthodox church...Ethiopia as a country is the oldest country in the world..they were existed even before others were not known...The original birth place of human kind...their skin colour is amazing...not white,not black...still am amazed that Ethiopian is the only country in the year 2013 now. Still following the Ethiopian orthodox church calendar system.

We are definitely black and don’t forget that Ethiopia shares its alphabetic system etc with Eritrea and there are multiple ethnicities therefore multiple languages in Ethiopia. Also every country has their own language.
What makes you think these people are not”black?” Africa had the greatest genetic diversity on the planet when people emerged from there to populate the world. We look different depending on the religion of Africa we come from but we are phenotypically “black.” Some Ethiopians have very dark skin. Much darker than many people from South Africa.

I am Russian Orthodox but I love learning about the Ethiopian texts. It is impossible to fully understand the Bible without at least being somewhat familiar with the Ethiopian canon.
For example, Enoch is not in our canon. But Saint. Paul quotes from Enoch, so one should be familiar with it in order to provide context for what he is saying.

This was such a good explanation and breakdown. I have a book with some of the Ethiopian Bible books. Makes really good reading. Some is intense but it confirms the canonical too. Will look up more of these books

I have learned things I have never heard before I have studied the protestant Bible and the Catholic answer Bible I would like to be a member of Ethiopian Orthodox church and study The Ethiopian Bible because it is the complete Bible on Earth.

Interesting video (and great advice about reading the nearest Bible) but I don't think it answered why Ethiopian Orthodox canon is different. The sequence of events for the Catholic and Protestant canons seems pretty laid out but I didn't see any positive evidence for why most of the additional books are canonical besides Jude 14-15.
I'd be interested to know if the Ethiopian Orthodox church went through a similar process as the Catholics, like did they have councils or some other definitive event that set the canon? Or why did the Catholics omit those books? As it is, the argument seems to be that the additional books are canon because they were regarded as canon by the Fathers but there's no detail for me to buy that or to understand why other churches don't accept those additional books.

Interesting points about the (rather uncertain) translation from mostly Hebrew. However it’s not true to say that the vowel-less made Hebrew difficult to read. In Hebrew you seldom need to specify the vowels because it’s fairly obvious what they are. Hebrew is a mostly consistent, phonetic language. And some consonant letters double up as vowel sounds, so the spelling and structure of a word often tells you what the vowel sound should be… :)

I needed to see this, when I read Book of Jude and the reference to Enoch prophesy immediate thought well why have they taken Book of Enoch out?? Just didn’t sit right with me, then I listened to some audio of Book of Enoch and was blown away if I’m honest!! So thank you brother for clearing that up! The earliest manuscripts of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were written between 100 to 200 years after the lives of the Apostles and the actual writers and the means by which they acquired the accounts of the four Apostles are unknown. The earlier followers did not document and keep chains of narration, as far as Bible scholars have discovered.

@@BrentBestwick The apostles were illiterate, the Bible literally says this. The language used in the manuscripts show that the authors were very well versed. Not only that, in none of the four canonical gospels is there a mention of the author. The authorship of the gospels is anonymous and the names of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were added at a later date due to tradition.
@@GermanCricket13 Please point out the place where the Bible says Luke (a physician of the times), Matthew (a tax collector), Mark and John were illiterate. Many of Jesus' followers were indeed fishermen by trade and probably illiterate, but that assumption doesn't apply to all 4 gospel authors.

@@GermanCricket13 thank you! That specifically identifies Peter and John as being illiterate and could by extension refer to all the other followers of Jesus at that scene. I would respectfully suggest 2 points on this: 1) this verse highlights the cognitive dissonance experienced by the witnesses, that these uneducated and illiterate men were nonetheless capable of clear, bold verbal dissertation...so something out of the ordinary was taking place with their testimony and it doesn't seem unreasonable that the same could take place with their written testimonies that were to come; 2) if we want to dismiss the divine intervention approach, we should still note that scribes were very commonly used to handle literate matters for the illiterate, much as we would employ a lawyer to handle unfamiliar legal matters...Paul appears to have used a scribe to transcribe his own letters to the local churches.
Please consider that it's very much within the realm of reason to conclude that the authorship of the gospels is just what it appears to be: by the eyewitnesses themselves or in Luke's case after a thorough investigation of the witnesses.

That was a great video! I never knew the history of why certain books were considered canonical and not others. I grew up in a Protestant religion and then my mom converted us into the JW cult (which fortunately I escaped). I read the 66 books version many times but no one ever wanted to have discussions about why other denominations saw the other books as holy.

I appreciate any concern since I have noticed that most people who were trapped in cults get little to no sympathy when they are out and in need of help and support. It means you lose everything, all your friends and usually your whole family. It is very sad that modern culture ignores people like us, treating us like 'Oh you had free will, you could have left at any time.' But that is just totally false.
Cults keep a strong psychological and social hold over people, threatening them with shunning and eternal damnation if you have the audacity to try and question any of their doctrines.
JW's in particular have a very low retention rate, which means most people born in the cult eventually leave (something like 60%). If you never got baptized, your family can still talk to you, but if you did, you are treated as if you were dead if you leave. I was so emotionally invested in it and craved the approval of my mother and the elders that I was baptized in my teens, and spent decades trying to live the 'exemplary' JW life.
JW's are expected to show up to 2 or 3 meetings a week, do door-to-door recruitment, trying to get new converts every weekend (which DOES NOT WORK), and only date/marry within the group, and only work menial labour and lower class jobs that don't require higher education. If you disobey, you are labelled 'bad association'.
A lot of parents beat their little kids because they cannot sit still and be quiet for two hours of indoctrination sessions. You can hear it happening, and you cannot say anything. Abuse within marriage and s*xual exploitation of children is shockingly common, although the rank and file members never hear about it. They preach how terrible other churches are for putting up with child abuse while looking away from it happening in their own midst. They tell abuse victims to NOT contact the police! If they do, they are threatened with shunning! Even members of the so called 'Governing Body' of prophets living in New York State have been accused by adult survivors of CSA that they were r*ped as children. It is such a disgusting, fake group that lies through its teeth all day long, dangling the carrot of 'everlasting life on a paradise earth' to keep you from disobeying or asking questions.
But the funny thing is, if you actually read the Bible every day on your own (which they do recommend, even though most don't do it), you can see how they are false teachers, absolute Pharisees and hypocrites who dishonour God and Christ with all their doctrines.

This is THE BEST "definition" of the Bible i have ever seen. Im not "religious" in the sense that i go to church .... But, i do believe that THE BIBLE is the key to all things past, present, & future. Its prophecy can NOT be denied, therefore, the history contained with-in, should NOT be discredited. Question: I have read that the Books of Maccabees are actually different in your canon (rather than the texts you have in the Catholic/Byzantine Canons, there are related texts called Meqabyan). Is that actually true or is that just the Ge'ez transliteration of Maccabees?
*also, it is important to note that many of the books of the deuterocanon were actually composed in Hebrew (like Baruch and 1 Maccabees), even if they only exist today in Greek.
Great question! Book of Maccabees is mystery! I honestly do not know what the source for the Ethiopic text is.

I'm grateful for the video. I was with you all the way through until the end when you suggested that we need to filter the text of the Bible through the church fathers. The only context appropriate for understanding ancient text is the context that created it. We have a much better understanding of the culture which produced these books today than was available at any time prior with the exception of the time that produced the book.

While not wishing to get into any polemical topics, let me point out one objective error in the video:
The Catholic Church mostly uses councils (like the Council of Trent) for the purposes of reaffirming teachings that have been held for a long time, which suddenly begin to be disputed. The duties of a council can vary, but one of them is judicial: To compare newly-arisen notions against existing teachings, to see if they are compatible or incompatible, and to formally deny them as incorrect if they're not compatible.
I mention this because some folk think that until something is decided by a council, it's up-in-the-air. But this isn't correct. Normally a doctrine is entirely fixed in tradition UNTIL someone challenges it with a new idea, and in response to THAT, the new guy gets called "heretic" by some folks, and "genius truth-teller" by others. And when THAT happens, a council is called to decide whether the guy's a heretic or a genius truth-teller, so that the faithful can continue to share "one faith" (as well as "one Lord" and "one baptism").
When the Council of Trent stated that the Catholic Canon had 73 books (as the video correctly stated), it was doing so in response to the challenge from the Protestant smaller canon. But the 73-book Catholic canon had been universal among Catholics for well over 1,000 years.
The first affirmation of that canon was from Athanasius' Easter Letter to his diocese in 372 A.D., but the councils of Rome (382), Hippo (393 AD), and Carthage (397) also affirmed the same canon. In 393 Pope Damasus I commissioned the Latin Vulgate translation, using that canon. And in 405, Pope Innocent I wrote to a bishop in Gallacia, he affirmed the same canon.
Prior to that, we have no written record of a the use of that canon, but we have written records of canons that are similar. For example, the Church at Corinth, as early as 200, was using all the Catholic canon's books, but was also using the letter of Clement of Rome to...Corinth, for the obvious reason that it was written to them and about them.
Anyway, YES, the Council of Trent was the first time there was a big dissent about the canon in the West since the year 372. For that reason, it made a definitive pronouncement about the canon. But one can't think of this as the first time that canon was ever seen; on the contrary, because of their lack-of-knowledge about goings-on in Ethiopia, it was the first time since the 300's that they'd encountered any dispute about it.

As a Christian, I come across the issue of why we have so many Bibles and what about the books that were left out. As your video pointed out near the end, what's most important is that we understand the Bible we choose to use since "Genesis is Genesis" 💥

This video is Exellent except for errors with the names, how can he be ETHIOPIAN and speak about Jesus christ which is GREEK, he refers to jesus father as heavenly father only

Most scholars now agrees only gospel of mark seem to be written by mark. Matthew, John and luke are much later books written by anonymous authors.
