Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 review: The foldable phone I’ve been waiting for
Vložit

- The small improvements Samsung made to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 make it arguably the best foldable phone around for curious mainstream users. Its versatility makes it more fun to use, and you’ll have to live with a shorter battery life than on traditional modern phones. But those looking for their first foldable will find the Flip 4 capable and satisfying.

I just got my flip 4, and yeah... this is freaking amazing.
I held this phone in person for the first time this past weekend. Beautiful
waiting for mine to arrive. I tested it at the store, much easier to handle it when folded. and my best is that it should help with digital well being by adding some friction to check the screen.
I love that the flex mode trackpad is best used for closing itself
😂😂😂😂
Good thing it's not enabled by default. You have to turn it on if you think you need it for certain apps.
The review was top class covering every detail thoroughly giving the viewer a unbiased perspective. Great job!
Thank you for such a detailed honest review, your reviews give real-world experiences and do not just list the specs. I am in the market to replace my Pixel 5 and am thinking of Z Flex 4 (heavily discounted to $600 CAD with 512 Gb) or Pixel 6 pro or Pixel 7(in Oct). Instead of the same old candy bar experience, I am leaning towards a Flip 4, you make it look like a lot of fun. Thank you so much for your very valuable review. Appreciated
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment!! 🙏🙏🙏
I love mine
If any of my friends and family want just one review for this phone, it's yours. I've watched a lot of reviews and yours is the best by far.
this is so kind of you to say, thank you! I'm honored
@@CherlynnLow agreed with that user. This vid was very inspiring for me to go into my phone and make some adjustments.
@@pizzamonster9758 aww thanks! i'll make sure to keep keeping an eye out for little settings to tweak. I've become so used to expecting that phones work the way i want them to out of the box that I hardly ever spend that much time digging through settings like I used to (before I became a reviewer haha). Thanks so much for your kind comment and for watching!
Believe it or not, I convinced to buy the Z Flip 4 from your review and your experiences on Instagram using the device! I was a very long time iPhone user and after the cancellation of mini this year I decided to change my 12 mini for the new Flip. In my opinion, most people like me want the small form factor for practical reasons, not necessarily the small screen and the limiting small battery. After using the Flip 4 for a couple of days in can admit that I love it!! It combines the practicality of the pocket size (smaller than iPhone mini when folded) and the benefits of a huge 6.7” display! And for my modest using I managed to pass two and a half days of use on a single charge (for comparison, the exact same usage on 12 mini gave me about a day and the next morning even when it was new).
I believe the future for the small phone lovers is the foldables.
watching this form my flip 4, i love it. although i am paranoid about the screen cracking like it did on so many of the flip 3 pictures/complaints and reviews. great review i totally agree
Enjoyed the review a lot, you clearly love the Flip 4!
great review, can you see Teams and Outlook and Gmail notifications on the small exterior display?
One of the best Engadget videos in a long time
I absolutely love it💜No complaints here.😃
The way you out this review together is great! Very informative and fun! Love the way you make everyone understand what the Flip is for :)
I loved this review. It made me want to keep mine, which I was going to return!! Thank you!!🌹🌹
I doubt a larger outside screen would reduce the battery life. In my opinion, the opposite is the case. With a larger screen you can do more without having to unfold the phone almost every time. If you can do more on a smaller screen it will safe you battery life.
Just imagine if reviewers understood alot of people, alot of the time only do small things on their phone throughout the day that actually dont require a 6+ inch screen to light up....
Do more as in what? Ppl mostly want it larger for content consumption. I've seen ppl use Cover OS to play games, watch youtube videos, tiktok etc on this small 1.9-inch screen. If it was larger ppl would run through the battery fast. Then complain.
Samung made the right move with keeping it small. Just give us more features.
Great point!

Nice honest, real world review. Kudos
Great review. This phone is nice and after using it a week now, I can say its fantastic.
Great video. I have preordered the bespoke in red/white
Very excited 😊
I'm so excited for you! The Bespoke options are just 👌👌🔥
@@CherlynnLow thank you 😊 💜
Is there a glass underneath the screen protector? So there would be two pieces of glass cover by a single screen protector that is bendable.
I think they should add a button to flip it open, that way we don’t have to used the other hand to do it.
you can remove flex mode for apps you want in settings.
A very complete test, with many details focused on describing in the most precise way what this Fold four offers. Personally I think it's already a mature and balanced phone for the masses, maybe the price is little high' in some countries, but listen, this is a high range and offers innovation. Greetings to the whole community.
Yes... interesting review for a phone I would only buy if it came with a 12 years long warranty 😉
But I still like to know what it's like to own and use the latest device... it's just that I expect my devices to outlast by far my crave for novelties.
Thank you so much! Appreciate your time in watching the video and leaving this comment
i hope it gets more improvements. the flip form is something very very personal to a lot of millennials growing up in early 2000s. i dont see it going away anytime soon as it's a way for phone companies to flex their screen tech, and also appealing to nostalgia that draws loyal milennial customers. i just got my flip 4 and i love it
How do you like it so far?? Hesitating getting this one
Thank you for the honest and interesting review. Santa is bringing me one!
Just ordered mine :)
Nice review
I went the Bespoke route, built it in white with the silver frame. The Flip 4 feels even more solid than the Flip 3. I'm digging it so far. 👍
Oh ho hoooo Bespoke 🔥🔥👌👌👌
Cool review! Does it wirelessly charge when folded or when unfolded?
Both. The trickier part though, is making sure if you are using a wireless charger stand style, that it aligns with where it needs to be, since the contact spot on the Flip phones are positioned a little lower than other phones. If you like to use ones that lay flat, it won't be an issue at all.
I had to fold three which I purchased in december, I'm keeping it but I'm going to buy the flip four. The flip was always the design that I thought was the most useful. Back in the day I always wanted that laptop phone, and I get it but these days we're looking for tablets and I use the main screen on the front just as much as I did the inside no I did.. I actually used it more. This one is actually lighter and I can just take it with me everywhere. Going to see how I like it. I'll probably get to see fold five when I sell my fold
Such a lovely review and i love the flip4 as well but i am gonna pass and wait for the S23 ultra, cuz of the fact that the processor is going to be managed by TSMC the battery life and sustained performance is going to be great in the s23 ultra i guess.I am surprised at how efficient the 8+ Gen 1 is on the flip 4 and the fold 4.Btw loved the video, please keep them coming.

@Jon G. Aw thanks! Appreciate your kindness 🙏☺️
Great review, and thanks for recapping the features that carried over from the 3 so I don't have to go back and watch that video to see everything about the 4.
I love foldable phone💜💜💜
I thoroughly enjoyed this review. Excellent
Quick question
Why are you wearing two watches ?
How you watch video on front little screen .....
I've been using my z flip 3 since it's release and I love it. The battery life is my only real complaint, glad to see Samsung improved that. I have no need to upgrade yet since my 3 is still in good condition, but I know what I'm getting when I'm ready. If the 5 isn't out by then lol.
Consider taking advantage of Samsung's direct trade-in system. They gave me $900 for my Flip 3 to use towards the Flip 4. Brought the cost down to $145.
@@midnighttornado22 I may need to look into that.
And I got the purple one for cool factor 😎
I have it in graphite. Only wish they had an option to have chrome sides. Black with chrome side would look dope. And samsung gave me 800 dollars for my S8! So this cost me a couple hundred bucks. Worth it
$800 for an S8? Hard to believe.
I enjoy flip phones. I'm gonna get the Bora or Pink Gold if my provider has it.
Loved the 3 but agree on the battery. traded in for the 4 mainly for this reason and supposedly, Samsung has improved the the screensaving foil glue, so no more delaminating.
smart move😁
Unfortunately that trade-in is US only. The rest of us will keep the Flip3 for another year and get the 5

My z flip 4 came in today. And it feels nice

I watch a lot of drama on my phone in full screen mode. I'm wondering if the crease/folding point in the centre causes any issue with this Flip 4? Whether the picture will be distorted? Can you share your views?
The crease doesn’t cause any issues watching anything in full screen mode, you’ll be fine. I’ve heard other reviews saying that they don’t see it while watching things.
@@Zbeast5972 thanks for sharing. I'm glad to know that. Have pre-ordered my Flip4 and am looking forward to receiving it soon.
@@MomoAndAoi no problem! I can’t wait to order mine.
@@Zbeast5972 Lol, drama. Cute! I am contemplating getting the 4 as well. I have the I phone 13 pro max and love it but want a convenient foldable beautiful looking and great working phone.
@@nogood2419 I have the Flip 4 and it’s been great, honestly been enjoying it more than my IPhone 14.
That suck I change it 2 times and it breaks from middle
You can actually configure the external screen to display the entire photo while taking photos
Do you mean the double tap gesture to change the aspect ratio? That's a good point 👍
Samsung needs to get the outside screen larger now that people use it to take photos mostly
Yesssss
I've had all different types of phones I've had an iPhone but I'm an android fan. Just got rid of the Wing. Don't get it. The Flip is everything I've been looking for.
Question - will Samsung be pushing these new features to the Flip 3 on the next update?
All I wish is they make the main screen slightly wider so it suits all the aspect ratios and could be used for watching videos better.
Heck yea!!
I just traded my iphone 13 pro max for the flip and Im so scared im not going to like it but I just want to try something new
I would never have done that now for the fold yes but not the flip
@@tgarris2873 either one is better imo. The iPhone 13 is just... The iPhone for this year, minimal changes. The Flip is a whole different experience
Please LET ME KNOW ? I have a iPhone 13 pro max and really want the flip z… I had the option last year between this iPhone I have and the flip z 3. And I know most likely iPhone 14 won’t be any different from an iPhone 13.
The flip is best if you want to carry a smaller phone (however thicker). However, if you have the flip 3, just pull off the screen protector if it's coming loose or has bubbles. You don't really need the flip 4.
If you're getting the Flip 4, just be wary of the screen protector bubbling up at the crease. I finally removed mine on my Flip 3 today at Ubreakifix AKA Asurion for free. Took only 2 minutes. It was only getting bigger and annoying to look at. We'll see how it holds up without one but I do take really care of my phones and Gorilla Glass Victus is very scratch resistant.
Had I got the screen protector replacement, it would just bubble up again after 6 to 12 months depending on much I use it which surprisingly isn't much. I think if you only use one phone, you need to go for the Flip 4 over 3 just from the battery life alone. Since I carry two phones daily, I don't need the battery life upgrade.
My biggest concern without a screen protector is if the black cracks starts developing at the crease? From what I've read, Flip 3 is durable enough without it unlike the previous two gens. It is water-resistant and the display was much stronger than the previous ones, so I'm guessing most likely not. Be a rare case if it happens.
If it does crack, then c'est la vie. They're just material things. Will have it recycled. Warranty expires tomorrow. Will be using my other four phones that still works fine in 2022. I do believe Flip 3 will hold up well without a screen protector. If it doesn't, then I know for sure it will be the last Z Flip I'll ever buy. I'll stick to the Motorola Razr line. I much prefer their cover displays.
My Flip 3's crease does feel less shallower without the screen protector. It actually feels nicer. Our screen protector for these foldable flip phones is basically when they're closed.
The brand UbIfx used on mine when I replaced the screen protector on my Flip 3 a few months ago was trash. The original stock protector's right side edge area of the hinge had been loosening up. Better to look online, and buy a quality third party brand. The one that finally held up flex-wise was from a brand called Skinomi. Had UbIfx put it on for me, so that my newb hands wouldn't mess it up. Was better than stock, and was flawless all the way up until I traded it in to Samsung for this Flip 4.
I've read too that the phone can survive without a protector, but I'd look at it as risky. Better to keep a protector on it. Just have to make sure the replacement is meant to flex.
I oddly love the visible crease it gives me a water like effect and idk why but if it get removed i will have nostslgia for it ... but i also have nostalgia for rabbit ear tv sets and the clamshell ibooks ...
I'm using Flip 3 for 8 months, I love it, and Flip 4 has 2 things that I wish Flip 3 does: matte back glass and better battery life (although current battery is good enough for me daily, but it's not comfortable for a long trip).
Really quality update!
Well I'm waiting for the Flip X, it's not that far away
The audio is very low
Great review but I had to laugh at the speaker review. Maybe if it had Dolby surround sound. Phone speakers will never be that good. :) I did hear there is a new lite mode which increase battery life even more...
Ahaha yea def never gonna have great quality audio wise
It doesn't obviously have rich audio but it does have a Dolby setting and it does make a difference in person
@@jamesmoucheron4799 good shout! I typically keep audio parts of review videos short since it can be hard to really show sound quality over a video, will try to spend more time on these details (when possible) in future!
Can anyone help
Curious why you started out saying that you 'hate to admit' that you have a new favorite phone?
Great question, idk why either! I think I'm somehow low-key embarrassed to admit the Flip is my new favorite phone because it's less due to techie reasons and more due to the fun aspects like selfie shooting lol
For me, a foldable screen, a second screen, and software touches like flex mode etc. make it way more techy than any old slab with incremental camera and speed updates. And the way this phone integrates all the tech to make the device fun and accessible also speaks about the company's engineering. But I see your point.
@@siddharththakur7480 I agree with you too! It's more that I'm an overthinker and easily embarrassed than anything else haha

what about the crease in the center of the screen?
It's a crease. It doesn't really do much, just kinda sits there
I'd like to see them put an eINK panel on the outer cover. Don't need a fancy color display for simple things like checking notifications, music, calendar, alarm etc. Keep a small color viewfinder for the camera if need, but otherwise the eINK would be perfect for this.

Waiting for the 512GB version to come in for my wife. She's looking forward to it after playing around with one briefly at Best Buy.
512 seems like such a life changing storage amount. Can’t wait for mine to come in.
@@lawbinson Yes and no. Being a person that has had devices with expandable storage it was always nice having that "extra" space even though I really rarely used it, especially considering OneDrive storage for who knows how long. Then when having a phone with no expandable storage but with 256GB of space built-in (Fold 3) I guess it's nice but still have the cloud storage for accessing everything that I deem important. However, my wife is quite the shutter bug so videos and pictures are always nice to have readily available instead of trying to find on GPhotos or OneDrive.
@@canad-ian Coming from a Note 8 64gb with expandable storage, I have not lacked for storage for photos and videos. But, I keep having issues with Apps eating up all my internal storage. Moving them to expandable storage only lasts until the next app update.
And, some photos / videos still need to be manually moved over to external storage depending on the app and its feature set. So, having a simplified massive internal storage for me will be quite life changing. I’m constantly clearing app caches, moving stuff over from internal to external… and would love to just not do that anymore.
one,two and triple chins?
The small front screen is one factor im waiting for Moto Razr! I prefer a slightly larger ftont screen. Samsung needs to improve the camera on flip phone for sure.
Hell yea!
Nothing works for me in flex mode, except for CZcams
If my s21 didn't dry out from dropping it in a pool I'd definitely take advantage of att trade in deal for a free flip. Even though the s21 is waterproof, it really isn't. I got the greenish yellow screen plus no service from sim card and fingerprint reader. Works fine after a week and half but used a TCL FLIP in the meantime. I do love flip phones as I grew up with them, first phone was a nokia 6110 in 97. Still in a way wished my s21 didn't work so I could get the flip4. But I'm content with the battery life and 3rd telephoto lens on the s21.

Yeah it's kind of stupid. $1k for an Android simply because it can fold.
@@JediWebSurf pretty much any flagship nowadays $1k already..
@@imnotokay7yago588 the flagships I consider cost at most $800. Anything more is extra. You can get the Galaxy S22 for $700 on Amazon.
