  • There was a time when Kentucky Fried Chicken dominated the fast food market for fried chicken, but it started facing some serious competition in 1972 from New Orleans’ own Popeyes Chicken.
    KFC may still retain global popularity, but Popeyes' unique menu - that includes its signature Cajun fries, red beans and rice, and its famous fried chicken - is to die for.
    Over the years, Popeyes Chicken has even come out with popular seafood dishes like fried shrimp and catfish. This fast food fried chicken joint has transformed over the last 40 years, and to find out more about this truly southern restaurant, here is the untold truth about Popeyes.

Home cooked is best but maybe try a place like Boston Market or similar places for rotisserie chicken. Matter of fact, I think almost every Walmart or major supermarket in america with a kitchen makes rotisserie chicken.
      Nothing wrong with fried chicken in moderation (like drinking beer or wine)from Popeye's KFC or any chicken joint maybe IMO at most 1-2x a month for comfort food.

    My EX knew the lady who was Al Copeland’s nanny while he was growing up. She worked for his family cooking etc. Al LOVED her chicken and red beans recipe and learned her recipe from her. He opened Popeyes with it and bought rights to her recipe paying her 10,000 and in the 70s to her that was big Time especially since she lived in the magnolia projects in New Orleans. Anyway she died at an old age in the projects still poor after money was gone. But everyone knew about her and that it’s her recipe for the chicken, beans and dirty rice. That is the insiders truth about Popeyes only native New Orleans knows about!

    I grew up in the small town Popeyes originated from. It was before my time. Tons of local rumors about old man Copeland. He was well known for setting up over the top Christmas light setups like Clark Griswald and the old money neighbors hated it. He had all kinds of divorce drama as well. Way I remember it he went bankrupt after overextending himself to buy out Churches chicken and both went to corporate hands after that. Who knows how many corporate conglomerate hands it’s been passed through since, but Popeyes still remains my favorite chain chicken place. KFC blows.
    Pro tip, get spicy chicken, side of mashed potatoes and gravy with dirty/Cajun rice and some biscuits. Dip the chicken skin and biscuits skin into the mash and gravy, carb heaven. Treat yourselves.

      The first Popeyes opened in late 70s or early 80s. I think it was either Uptown on Broad st or Downtown on Broad st. I will have to ask around. I am in my 40s so we use to go to the original one in New Orleans. Popeyes used to have all the Popeyes cartoon paraphernalia everywhere! And the Saturday morning Popeyes special on tv where all the kids would get Popeyes and interviewed in between showing Popeyes cartoons! I wanted to be on that show so bad! If you miss home you can find the original footage of all Old New Orleans on youtube, the news, worlds fair, Popeyes show! I still live here and I miss New Orleans. I’m a stranger in my city!

      Biba Isla Boutique Salon I hit the 40 in a couple of months myself. I recall the old Popeyes locations. I loved the old design with that black charcoal like walls. I just remember growing up in Chalmette hearing of Copeland having a chicken stand on the side of the road back in the late 60s or so. Like it was a little stand, I believe they used to say it was on St.Bernard hwy down around where the old drive-in theater used to be. That’s what I meant by the “first Popeyes”.
      I miss my 20s more than I miss Nola, lol. But I gotta say, I was lucky to have had my youth in the perfect town for it. All in all, it comes down to shrimp/fried oyster poboys, snowballs, nightlife, and king cake. I mail order Randazzos (keepin it real) king cakes from time to time.

      @jonathonsimon7770 Před 6 lety +3

      Yeah, as usually Mashed purposefully makes misleading statements to get subs. In this case, blurring the use of hormones and antibiotics. As someone already pointed out, antibiotics don't make chickens grow bigger, that's what hormones do. Antibiotics keep chickens healthy and free of things like salmonella. And BTW hormones in the US are not legal, so that's a non-issue. Notice also how the headline on the antibiotics also blurs the details, by combining Popeyes with all the food production of the parent company - again purposely misleading.

    2017? That explains A LOT. My local store changed so suddenly -- went from cooking everything fresh (15-20 min wait, but it was amazing, hot, fresh, crispy) to "holding" food. Now the food is soggy, and usually undercooked. I quit going after I got sick on two seperate occassions within a month immediately after eating from there. Shame.

      Jade try making your own fried chicken. Use lard instead of corn oil and see what the difference is. "Grandma's fried chicken" is home made to perfection and so would yours if you tried lard. The thing is...save and re-use the lard. It gets better and better.
      Takes on a golden color from the chicken. Makes really good fries too.
      Just try it.

    Trivia: Even though the restaurant wasn't named for Popeye the Sailor, he was still their mascot from 1978-2012*. So, maybe not *originally* that Popeye, but eventually yeah, that Popeye. (And no offense meant to the chain, because I enjoy their chicken, but I'm sure the cartoon name recognition helped the franchise at least a little bit.)
    (* - Edit: Another source says 2006, so I'm not sure when exactly it officially ended.)

    • @Alwis-Haph-Rytte
      @Alwis-Haph-Rytte Před 5 lety +1

      That's why they use it, but MSG has sent me to the ER. I really like Popeye's, but can't have it, peeling the skin off helps, but temptation wins. So I have to eat at home and make everything from scratch. There's a lot of hidden MSG in things. It's not fun having your heart pounding so hard in your chest enough to make you think you're having a heart attack or your guts feel like a blender went thru them for the next 4 days, and or swollen lymph glands. But I did learn a trick to flush it out. Salt and baking soda in a glass of water, repeat in 2 hrs. MSG is a salt, so I use 2 salts to push out a salt. I got the idea from carbon monoxide poisoning using oxygen to push out the oxide, O vs CO.
      NaCl & NaHCO3 vs C5H8NO4Na
      It works for me, just have to catch it fast when I start feeling the symptoms from something that MSG was hidden in. I think KFC would kill me, they brine with salt and MSG. I think popeye's only brine with salt.

Though funny enough another place that has some real good fried chicken is a grocery store in my area called Carlie C's, it's part of IGA; they have excellent chicken. Also some Arab run gas stations where I live have pretty good fried chicken. Then again I live in the south and that's home of fried chicken lol.
