  • Four young students are challenged to walk the Pennine Way. This was an attempt (before it's time) at reality TV. The film crew walked with them all the way, which again in those days, had not been done before.

I can remember walking this in 1973 just after I left school, and even now 50 years later I can still pick out where I camped along the Pennine Way. I hiiked it again in 1976 just prior to joining the Army. I would love to go back and do it again but I realise the years have caught up with me and I have to admit it will not be possible to undertake the 290 miles hike and relive my memories via YourTube clips like this one. Thanks for uploading a treasured memory.

Thank you for posting this film which I enjoyed many years ago. I was afraid it had disappeared without trace. So much better than the recent B.B.C. programmes on the Pennine Way which was all about the presenter and not about the walk.

It would be nice to see the four walkers in a documentary on where they are now, and what they are doing now in there lives.

Delighted to see this again. I had the series on Betamax as a teenager and must have watched it at least fifty times. I've still got about 80 miles left too, and I'm 43 now! The commentary, music and camerawork all really capture the experience of doing this kind of walking - not least the desolation which can sometimes engulf walkers immersed in these landscapes. It's great to see the bleak summit of Black Hill as Wainwright described it - "a hopeless quagmire" - rather than with its recent patio, and to remember all the eighties hiking gear which made us so uncomfortable. I wonder what became of the four walkers? A magical programme.

Fascinating watching. Just shows how much tougher the walk was back then. No flagstone paths, technical lightweight equipment etc. One thing that hasn’t changed though is if you wander off piste on Kinder or Bleaklow then prepare for knee high bogs!

Nice calm soothing presentation,so much better than today's noise soundbite garbled speech poseur TV. I wish they still made TV like this. I too would like to know about the four walker today.

Do the walk;the trick is to realise that it isn't a flipping race.So slow-down at the foot of very hill-and-slope.(I employed this er technique when I did this walk as a 14 stone 15 year old in 1981!So you have NO excuses.

Loved this a young hiker in the 80s. Miles better than more recent programmes on the PW. Wonder what they are all up to now?

There were quite a few programmes like this back in the day. Proper walkers doing hikes and they focussed on the walk and the scenery. Nowadays they spend more time on the presenters and the bores they 'meet' along the way. The recent Best Walks series with Julia Bradbury have been awful.

Great series! For anyone contemplating the Pennine Way, North to South is the best way to do it in my opinion

Looks like a lot of this doesn't yet have the stone flags as it does now? Anyone remember what it was like?

I first did the route in 1983,a year after this film was made.I would say the walk was different in those days as the main problem was constantly wet feet unless you walked during a very dry period. After the paving was put down in 1990 the problem became sore feet!
