Apple updated the Mac Mini with the M2 processor and a $100 price cut. With the lowest price we've seen on a Mac in years, we run it through it's paces to see if this computer is good enough for most people.

Having been a Mac hater my entire life, my first Mac was a M1 Mac Mini because I was shocked at how cheap it was, and when I used it I was blown away by how absurdly good it was to the point I made the full switch to Mac as my daily driver. I wish I could have a Mac be my only computer, but the lack of games means I have to keep my Windows gaming PC. After Alexis' account I think it's clear the gaming problem of macOS is the one thing preventing mass adoption, and it would probably be a good topic for a future video with Mac Address' take on the gaming on Mac situation even though LTT already did one.
Also, give Alexis a Steam Deck.

I get what you're saying. Bur a company like apple doesn't deserve my money (in my opinion ofc) with the way they greenwash their shit. Look how good we're doing. But they started the trend of removing Headphone Jack and power adapter. Not because it's more green, no because it means more $$$ in their bank account.
As someone who sells their old phones 8 never have a spare brick laying around. Because without the brick it nerfs your resale value. Without the box it's even worse.
And their repairability is the major thing i fall over.
Self service is a joke, married parts. And no way for your local phone store to fix your damn phone. Nahh mate this is what makes me hate apple.
And on a sidenote Samsung(anti root security, and anti non official rom bull) and OnePlus (serialized/married batteries to the Mobo). Companies limit the things you can do with your phone for a longer lifetime.
Pretty sure that keeping the phones in use for a longer time reduces ewaste.
And they are actively taking that opportunity away from us all.
Because we all know the last thing to go bad in your phone is the battery /s

    • @ids1024
      @ids1024 Před rokem +8

Gaming is a factor limiting mass adoption, but it's not the main one. I don't think it's a major consideration for most users. The main factor is still the price. It looks like the cheapest (new) MacBook on Apple's website is still $999 USD. While my impression is that a huge percentage of computer sales these days are Windows laptops or Chromebooks that cost half or a quarter that.
It's probably worth spending more to get a better computer if you can (regardless of what it is), and may pay off in terms of longevity. But that isn't necessarily what the average consumer is doing.

There is zero reason for the base level Mac mini to have 16GB of RAM. I also don't think 256GB is terrible for a base, but the extra $200 to go up to 512GB is too much. $100 should be more acceptable. And the M2 Pro model comes with 16GB and 512GB base, which are decent specs for a majority of people, just the price is a little high.

The great thing about this is that you can also just use it as a laptop and take it around with you. It's powerful enough to do both.
I have a macbook pro 16" and do the same. It's very nice peace of mind for me to know that I can use my macbook pro as either a desktop or just take it with me as a laptop.

The unfortunate thing about the state of gaming on Mac is that all of the M1 machines are actually quite capable of light gaming. The M1 GPU is roughly equivalent to a laptop 1650 - which obviously isn't amazing, but also capable of running pretty much every game at low/medium settings at a playable framerate.

I purchased a base model M1 Mac Mini back when it was released as replacement for my Mid 2015 15" Macbook Pro, and I would agree with what was said in the video. For everyday web-browsing, video calls, etc. it worked flawlessly and was a huge upgrade from my Macbook Pro. But recently I've been doing more creative work, specifically photo-editing with Lightroom, graphic design with Canva and some video editing with Final Cut Pro. This workflow really started to slow the M1 Mac Mini down and show the limitations of the 8 gb of RAM. I decided to start using my Macbook Pro for the same workflow, and though importing, exporting and rendering all takes a little bit longer, it has felt like the computer is waaaayyy faster because of the 16 gb of RAM and 2 gb of dedicated VRAM. Most of the videos I watched about the M-series processors when they were released said that the 8 gb of RAM would feel like 16 gb of RAM, and that was just flat out wrong! But, luckily the M2 Pro is now in the Mac Mini, and once I'm able to sell my M1, I'll be upgrading and will probably get 32 gb of RAM just to future proof myself!

It isn't intuitive to me, and I find a lot of the design decisions hurt my ability to just... Work.
Whilst Windows isn't great in a lot of aspects, it is a lot more flexible for me, and the freedom to install it on any hardware I want is good enough, whilst Linux is a little too... Still, it blows my mind when I do training compared to my friend's beefy desktop. With the same script and data set, I could do it in seconds while he in minutes. My MacBook pro is not the new one. It is only MBP 14 m1 pro, and I do not regret buying it. Especially with an external monitor (a must if you like to do something on a desktop) or NVME with a thunderbolt case if you like video editing and don't have enough internal SSD.

I appreciate how the writing has changed since the start of the channel, I was afraid we would just get an info dump channel but the framing each video as a story has made them super enjoyable to watch.

This is just a testament to how effective it is to get people bought into your ecosystem young. She does a lot of stuff that would be much easier on a PC, but when getting a computer from her family she simply wasn't aware at the time. Different strokes for different folks

I’m a mixing engineer and sound designer and, while waiting for my M1 Max MBP to show up, I tried a 16gb M1 Mac Mini which worked great for my then current projects but was CONSTANTLY swapping memory.
Haven’t had any of that happen on my 32gb M1 Max.

I've had an M1 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM for over a year now. No hiccups as long I keep plenty for room free on the internal SSD for memory swapping. But I HATE the seconds I have to wait for the Mac to spin up external hard drives, even if I want to save to the internal drive

The funny thing is, I have a 2018 13 inch MacBook Pro. I haven't really used Apple Silicon Macs, though, so it still feels fine to me.

Nice video . Question for you .Would get the Mac Mini pro M2 with 16 GB of Rams and 2 TB of SSD or Mac mini Pro M2 with 32 GB of rams and 1TB of SSD ? Both are the same price . I am debating right now. :))) ( use for video editing )

Planning on getting the M2 pro Mac mini. I have a pc and game on that but doing video and photo editing flows better for me on a Mac. I also prefer logic and Final Cut to premier or ableton

I am really tempted to get one and install Asahi Linux on it, but the GPU driver for now isn't stable state so probably to be a fun project in the future compared to getting those higher end ARM SBCs which gets close to the price.

I bought an iMac a year ago with the M1 and I stayed away from the 8Gb as much as possible. I knew with the photo editing I wanted to do and the multi tasking my fiancé does we needed a model with at least 16Gb. We’ve been happy with it since. I’ve been thinking of getting the Mac mini for my own use we don’t have to share a work station. If I did that I’d definitely opt for more RAM

Had a m1 air with 512gb of ssd and 8gb of ram. I feel my configuration didn’t chug as much when doing light gaming and running VMs.
Web performance sucked for some reason tho.
Eventually I ended up trading my m1 air in for M1 Pro 14inch bass model. Great middle ground for memory and multiple monitor support.

I had to get a macbook pro for school before the m2's came out, and I feel I made a great buy that'll last. m1 max(32 core) 1tb with 32gb ram, ebay preowned but was able to get applecare+ on it in case i'd need to replace the battery or if I break it in 3 years. I would have liked 64gb ram and 2tb but I prolly would never have come close to a good deal like this. And, I probably wouldn't been able to afford a ipad pro with m2 chip(16gb ram) to go along with it, for sidecar/drawing/universal control. I'll just stick to refurbished store and upgrade to 1 or 2yr silicon every 5-6ish years.

Finally might be time to upgrade my base late-2014 Mac mini. Swapping over an SSD into it got a few more years of use out of it but it's probably time I retire it to being a home theater PC.

Does MacAdress not know the iPad air 5 exists? It also costs $600, $550 if you're a student. They don't have a video on it, having reviewed the regular iPad that only works with the gen1 pencil. Yet it's been out for over a year.

I like the Macs Multi-Desktop-Management so much to keep me using it over Windows. As a Software def, I have some free-room on which platform I develop, but needless to say I have to test it on Windows too. So I built a Headless PC where I "Remote Desktop" into to work - and even game nowadays. Having both now, my Main Machine portable and always with me, Silent at my desk - and a "power hungry heater PC" where the sun does not shine.

I swapped completely to MacOS a couple of years ago. I had a desktop PC that needed a new graphics card for the latest games. I would have needed a new power supply for the new graphics card and was doing most of my gaming on PS4/5 so there seemed no point upgrading the PC. I bought an intel Mac mini which I then upgraded to the M1. I now use the Mac for my main computer with the PS5 for gaming. I'm very happy with the M1 and won't be upgrading until the M3/M4 comes out as it does everything I need it to do right now.

I got the M1 base model.
For every day tasks, i.e. browsing, emails, its great. I even use it for learning Python.
The only thing one has to watch out for with the base model is to stay away from swap memory. So close your tabs/windows/apps once you dont need them anymore. And this device should last for a long time :)
