  • The new SR-36 AM FM portable radio from Sangean has generated much excitement for my viewers. How well will it perform? The purchase price puts it up into some solid competition. Let's explore this receiver together.

    A big "THANKS!" goes out to Lee B, a Supporting Patron from Patreon for Donating this Radio to the Channel.
    Features I like about this Radio:
    FM Reception is Above Average.
    Headphones sound is Great on FM.
    Speaker Audio is Fantastic.
    Simple to Use controls.
    Compact Form Factor.
    Tuning LED indicator. Can't leave home without it :)
    Uses Standard AA Batteries.
    Spot for a Carry Strap.
    Hinged Battery Door.
    FM Antenna has a nice Range of Motion.
    Sturdy Construction.
    Features that could be Added or Improved on:
    Fix Popping on AM circuit.
    Packaging.
    FM Stereo.
    Include a Carry Strap.
    Lower Price.
    Overall, this radio as it stands, Does Not get a recommended buy from me. It is too expensive and the AM reception is plagued with popping/crackling that comes through the speaker and headphones. The price should be lowered to around $15. Sangean's SR-35 would be my recommended pickup if you don't want a Sony.

    Thank you, Todderbert for another honest review. None of us enjoy when a new radio from a major player is released and it isn't good. Next time, maybe! My P26 beats most everything in this catagory, but I don't have the NIA SP206. Hmmm... ?

      The Sony P26 is one badass little pocket radio. I picked one up at Walmart for $18.
      It’s a better AM receiver than my Sony ICF-38 which they’re now selling for around $200 (it was $25 when I bought mine and it’s nowhere near $200 worth of radio!)

    The Sony P26, 36, and 306 all seem to be the better option. This AM crackling seems to be common with some Sangeans. My HDR-14 has that same problem on some stations

      This one is bad...I had it out tonight and couldn't handle it and quickly put it back in the box. I did open it and was surprised by the amazing build quality. Why they didn't test their choice of DSP on the AM band is beyond me.

    As if AM broadcasters don't have a hard enough time as it is, now some of the radios add noise to a nice clean signal. AM has a bad enough reputation as it is for static without the radio manufactures making it even worse.
    Perhaps I shouldn't be so uptight about it, but I've gone to great lengths to make the station I'm on sound as good as possible because I want the listeners to have a good experience and enjoy the programing and music. I deeply care (perhaps more than I should) about what I do and abut radio itself, so radios like this.....let's just say "don't exactly make me happy."
    Get it together, Sangean. You're better than this.
    Thank you so very much for all you do. I love your content.

    • @DriveInFreak
      @DriveInFreak Před 3 lety

      @Kevin Cotham We're doing quite well with a freeform format.
      What is a "freeform format'?
      Almost anything goes, and the jocks get to pick their own music. We do not play "rap" or "metal", but we do play literally everything else. You'll hear everything from Jimi Hendrix to Michal Franks, to Zappa, to Miles Davis to Hall & Oats to Ledbelly to Stringbean to BB King to 3 Doors Down to.... THOUSANDS of records and hardly ever the same thing twice in a week or two.
      Why?
      We love radio and music. If we are bored we figure that you are too.

    • @DriveInFreak
      @DriveInFreak Před 3 lety +1

      @Kevin Cotham Give it time. With the high failure rate you are going to see more and more AM stations bought out for a song by people that want to get into radio just for the fun of it.
      You're absolutely right about the programming, though...and it's hurt the band in a major way.
      The hard part about anybody doing what we have done here in central Florida (5 stations, and counting) is letting people know that we exist. Do to all of the garbidge on the dial (regardless of political viewpoint...it's audio equivalent of watching paint dry) the vast majority of people don't bother with AM at all, thus if you actually do put something on that's worth tuning into few will just "bump into it". We got over this with billboards, as well as showing up to every even that we were allowed to (when there still was such a thing.
      I know that we are rare, but there will be more of us as times goes on. Don't give up up. We didn't, and it paid off.

    Newer radio companies have a lot of trouble with MW. The older sets seem much better on MW than this. I would like to see a radio that’s as good on MW as it would be on SW or FM.

    This certainly a pass. I have the SONY ICF P36. It is a good radio as far as reception is concerned. But my unit has a faulty volume control, which renders it unusable. I tried to clean it, but the problem persists. I also have the Toshiba TX-PR20. It also emits popping sound when the tuning light turns on and off on weak stations. I am not sure whether it is DSP or not. But it displays dsp characteristics while tuning which makes tuning hard.

      @todderbert  Před 4 lety +3

      The Sony may be repairable. Usually they use fixed wipers attached directly to the knob. They become bent and are not making proper contact. I have fixed a few Sonys by bending these back down.

      @@todderbert A lot of people complain of this problem, I personally returned a P26 because so many people had this issue I bought a roberts 925 it’s basically a fully analogue sangean 35, Sony has recently released a P27 which also suffers from popping the P26 are getting phased out in the Uk by the looks of things. • @davidrhodes9997

    Yes. The popping/clicking noise might explain why there are so many of these for sale on .bay being sold as "refurbished" which may well actually mean returned because the buyer realised it is a dud. I have some very cheap radios that do this too. There isn't really any excuse for Sangean to release such a bad AM radio as this.

    Cannot believe SANGEAN put out the SR 36 to the public as it's way inferior to the SR 35 it's predecessor . I carry portable radios in external holsters daily and gave up stereo using headphones just to enjoy great robust sound through the SR 35 internal speaker at jobsites, hiking or sports venue EVEN over the SONY HANDHELDS. BACK to the new SANGEAN SR 36 . BY design , was looking for accessable volume , tuning and earphone jack on top when holstered like it's " DT " STEREO models that fall s4hort in internal speaker sound. This model unlike the SR 35 has bad reception till you raise the external antenna 4 inches to equal the SR 35 INTERNAL ANTENNA for same RECEPTION . I use BOSE EAR BUDS COSTING 3 TIMES MORE than the SR 36 AND the ear jack fit so tight if I pulled accidently , wiring could become damaged . The SR 35 IS SUPERIOR sonically with speaker grills front and back emiting RICHER BI POLAR sound . If only SANGEAN would make the SR 35 STEREO with manual tuning to SAVE BATTERY POWER , IT would be A HANDS DOWN WINNER !

      If you want to use the Tecsun PL-310et to listen to medium wave you have to tune 1kz off frequency to disable soft mute or the pumping of the audio and distortion will drive you crazy. The volume drops so you`ll need headphones. I recommend the Sony ICF-19 ($29.00) but you have to use D-cell batteries but it has incredible battery life. Not sure if the tuning of the DSP chip is right for your country. In the USA our MW band tunes like this: 510, 520, 530, 540, etc.
