People don’t realize just how important and revolutionary this woman truly was. She was the first person ever to combine rock and roll with gospel, while also being one of the first to use guitar distortion. Even Eric Clapton took inspiration from her. This woman is incredible and up there with the very best.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a very popular gospel artist and evangelist during the 1930's and 1940's playing a jazzy blues on an acoustic guitar. She was one of two gospel singers that recorded records for the troops during WW2. She was gifted one of the first electric guitars made to create the riffs and power chords that were copied by the early rock and roll artists. She fell into obscurity like the rest of the jazz artists when tastes in popular music changed. Her life history is interesting to read. Born in Cotton Plant, Arkansas to grow up in Chicago then performing at the clubs in Harlem while still performing gospel music.

Me too...born in 1948; and I am a BIG Fan! I'm 74, and I heard about her from my grandmother when I was just a little girl. Rosetta and her mother were Evangelists from the Holy Sanctified Church of God in Christ; where guitars were primary and very prevalent instruments used in worship!

In 1964, there was a so-called "Blues Caravan" tour of Europe with Muddy Waters topping the bill.
A few days before the above railway station footage was shot, I saw the show in Liverpool, England and got Sister Rosetta to autograph my program.

Elvis stole music from black artists, that's not even debatable. If you want to talk bands that were influenced by blues, The Rolling Stones are the best example. The best American blues band, they were from England of course, but that doesn't matter, they were the best in the "Blues Rock" genre which is true American music. Semantics.

@Untrepid One - I grew up half in Texas and half in Canada. Rush was a big deal in Texas long before Canada. I remember sending my cousins in Alberta copies on cassette. The reggae stuff cured me of caring about what new stuff they might come out with.
This woman began rock and roll a legend. If it wasn't for her we wouldn't have metal music today.
I'm so glad we have footage of this legend and i get to see it! The blessed mother of rock and roll herself! She was so talented and inspired so many other artists that came after her. She essentially invented the rock genre in the 1930s but the credit ends up going to men who came way after her in the 50s like Little Richard and Chuck Berry.

The day my Nanny was buried in the family plot at Northwood Cemetery in Philadelphia, I looked over at a tombstone, and it was Sister Rosetta's grave. I was sad but became happy to see her grave knowing her history in music. I've been back to visit her and my family.

This fine Lady should have been in the Hall of RocknRoll Fame from day one. The world needs to hear her and she should be acknowledged for the magnificent talent she was. Sadly we live in a world where men are immediately granted recognition and a woman like this has been pretty much ignored.

Sadly she was overshadowed by Elvis. She was also growing up in a time and era of racism, which would prevent her from gaining any popularity.
I grew up with blues and bluegrass, I don't know how or where I first heard her but I've known about this outstanding woman for essentially my entire life, maybe most people just lack for good quality music growing up.
Because she's a Black woman that had Rock n Roll stolen from her like most music was stolen from us!! 🙄

Well, first she was Black, second a woman, and third, this music wasn’t exactly mainstream. Conservatives kept it out of mainstream music as long as they could until basically the late 50s 60s blew things wide open for rock and roll, but only white men were prevalent.
She was the real soulful deal!!! She loved God and was not trapped by some bad romance. It is 2024 and how many times have we seen a really great singer brought down by a bad romance??!! It is soooo important to sing to Jesus above all mortals. Love can come and go. I speak from heartbreaking experiences. Jesus has healed my heart and SET ME FREE. As a singer myself, Sister Rosetta is ALWAYS an inspiration!!!! I LOVE to see and hear her sing. She is the JOY OF JESUS personified with her music.😊
