Talk about rain oh my Lord
Didn't it fall didn't it fall

    Oh it rained forty days
    And it rained forty nights
There was no land no where in sight
God send the angel to spread the news
He haste his wings and away he flew
To the East to the West
To the North to the South
All day all night how it rained how it rained
    Didn't it rain children
Talk about rain oh my Lord
Didn't it fall didn't it fall
Didn't it fall my Lord didn't it rain
Some at the window some at the door
Some said Noah can't you take a little more
No no said Noah no no my friends
The nature got to keep you can't get in
I told you I told you a long time ago
You wouldn't hear me you disobey me
Lord send the angel a warning to you
It began to rain and now you are through
    Well it rained forty days
    Forty nights without stopping
    Noah was glad
    When the rain stopped dropping
Knock at the window knock at the door
    Come on brother Noah
    Can't you take any more
No no my brothers you are full of sin
God has the key you can't get in
Would you listen how it rained

People don’t realize just how important and revolutionary this woman truly was. She was the first person ever to combine rock and roll with gospel, while also being one of the first to use guitar distortion. Even Eric Clapton took inspiration from her. This woman is incredible and up there with the very best.

      My guy…she didn’t “combine rock and roll”…
*She pioneered it. She is considered the MOTHER of Rock and Roll. It didn’t exist yet and she contributed MASSIVELY to its creation.*

I'm not going to nit pick that you said rock n roll instead of the blues but
the blues, and by consequence rock n roll, have always been inexorably linked to gospel
blind willie johnson was recording both in the late 20s
so if you meant the first person to record gospel and blues, she's not the first but she's not too far behind
but if you meant first person to play gospel and blues, she's not even close at all
blues and gospel being sung together might be something that goes back to the days of slavery

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a very popular gospel artist and evangelist during the 1930's and 1940's playing a jazzy blues on an acoustic guitar. She was one of two gospel singers that recorded records for the troops during WW2. She was gifted one of the first electric guitars made to create the riffs and power chords that were copied by the early rock and roll artists. She fell into obscurity like the rest of the jazz artists when tastes in popular music changed. Her life history is interesting to read. Born in Cotton Plant, Arkansas to grow up in Chicago then performing at the clubs in Harlem while still performing gospel music.

If you google "who invented rock and roll" Chuck Berry pops up. However Chuck Berry HIMSELF said his entire career was “one long Sister Rosetta Tharpe impersonation.” On stage, she did an early version of Berry's duckwalk, but all you need to hear is the guitar introduction to Sister Rosetta's 1947 hit “The Lord Followed Me” to recognize Chuck's musical debt to her. ❤

@@norskichick - The more I see her videos and listen to her, the more outrageous it is that so few people have heard her. We should all be pissed off at the discrimination of women in the music biz. This fine Lady should have been in the Hall of RocknRoll Fame from day one. The world needs to hear her and she should be acknowledged for the magnificent talent she was. Sadly we live in a world where men are immediately granted recognition and a woman like this has been pretty much ignored.
Wouldn't it be nice if she was as commonly recognized as Clapton, The Beatles, Jeff Beck? Why does it have to be a surprise that this Lady accomplished what she did?
Fred Astaire is a household name, but everyone ignores the fact that Ginger Roger's did the same thing as Fred, only she did it in a long gown backwards and in high heels. Nothing against Fred - love to watch him dance.
If it weren't for the internet I would have never heard of Sister Rosetta.
It's a crime this woman has been ignored for so many years. It's 2023 people! Way past time for women like her to be acknowledged.
Makes you wonder how many more talented ladies have been ignored. 🤔

Well, first she was Black, second a woman, and third, this music wasn’t exactly mainstream. Conservatives kept it out of mainstream music as long as they could until basically the late 50s 60s blew things wide open for rock and roll, but only white men were prevalent.

She was the real soulful deal!!! She loved God and was not trapped by some bad romance. It is 2024 and how many times have we seen a really great singer brought down by a bad romance??!! It is soooo important to sing to Jesus above all mortals. Love can come and go. I speak from heartbreaking experiences. Jesus has healed my heart and SET ME FREE. As a singer myself, Sister Rosetta is ALWAYS an inspiration!!!! I LOVE to see and hear her sing. She is the JOY OF JESUS personified with her music.😊
