Worst Car Commercial ever - "Apple Juice"

Originally titled "Everyday Smoothie" everyone knows this ad as "Apple Juice". I am told this is the commercial that almost cost Saatchi & Saatchi the Toyota account. While I'm sure this seemed like a good idea at the time, the ad was pulled almost immediately. I've very glad I wasn't around then for it must have been a time of great wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I remember the Toyota "Everyday People" jingle from the late 90s. This is a bad car commercial because you have 45 seconds of people extolling apple juice and 15 seconds of seeing the actual car that is advertised.

I used to work for the ad agency that produced it for Toyota: Saatchi & Saatchi LA. This is one of the little nuggets of awesome that I collected while I was there. I didn't work on this ad or for SSLA back then, I came along later, but I heard some stories about this ad. It's nice to connect with someone that was in it!

The 1998-2001 Corolla was the LAST small Corolla, that was compact and lower profiled. In 2002, it became bloated, ugly and high-sided like a battleship.

Actually there were two different versions: the mid-size sedan for worldwide and compact for japanese. It became bloated in 1991 for worldwide, until the japanese got bloated too in 2002.

What's so awful about this ad? I have always associated "Everyday People" with Toyota. I don't have an explicit memory of this commercial in particular but I get the point. It's consistent with Toyota's other campaigns of its time which I still remember 15 years later...shows the message has a lasting legacy. You could argue that their ads today convey the same message but in a contemporary way. Clever
