  • Hugh Hempel is a technology industry veteran turned health care entrepreneur. In this moving talk he discusses how medicinal cannabis has enriched the lives of his ailing 11 year-old daughters. This talk will challenge your views of medical marijuana.
Hugh Hempel is a technology industry veteran turned healthcare entrepreneur. During his 30-year career in high technology, Hugh has held numerous senior management positions in many innovative and pioneering technology companies.
As chief operating officer and co-founder of Hopelink, Hugh launched one of the first Healthcare Internet start-ups that matched cancer patients with online clinical trials. Prior to founding Hopelink, Hugh held a variety of positions at Netscape, the first successful consumer Web browser software company. As Director of Online Marketing and Director of Enterprise Sales and Marketing, Hugh worked with the team that helped make the Web a reality for millions of people worldwide.
Prior to joining Netscape, Hugh worked as Manager of Engineering and Science markets for Apple Computer. While at Apple, he helped define the Apple Newton Messagepad, Apple’s first handheld computer that was a revolution in personal computing.
Hugh also held the position of Director at Computervision, an early pioneer in Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software used by companies around the world to develop automotive and aerospace products. Hugh’s first job in the technology industry was as a National Accounts Representative for IBM after graduating with a B.S. in Engineering Management from the University of Vermont.
In 2006, Hugh’s 10 year old identical twin daughters were diagnosed with a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease called Niemann Pick Type C, often referred to as “Childhood Alzheimer’s.” Since that time, Hugh and his wife Chris have immersed themselves in science and medicine and discovered through their own research that a simple sugar compound called cyclodextrin could save their twins’ lives. As parents, they successfully filed applications with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and received permission to try this never before used treatment on their daughters.
The Hempel’s journey to develop cyclodextrin has made international headlines and was recently featured in The Wall Street Journal in a 10 chapter story entitled, “A Desperate Fight to Save Kids and Change Science,” as well as in a documentary called “Here. Us. Now.” More information can be found at projects.wsj.com/trials and here-us-now.com/.
In 2009, Hugh and his wife Chris became interested in Cannabidiol (CBD), one of at least 80 active cannabinoids identified in marijuana and hemp, as his twins suffer from intractable seizures as a result of their disease and experience up to a 100 seizures a week. Through extensive research, they learned that cannabinoid receptors are involved in a vast array of functions in the body, including helping to control brain and nerve activity (including memory and pain), energy metabolism, heart function, and the immune system. After realizing pharmaceutical grade cannabis products were unavailable for their daughters and other patients in Nevada, the Hempel’s decided to create a Nevada based “cannabusiness” focused on legally developing and distributing high-quality flowers, extracts and concentrates at competitive prices.
Hugh sits on the Board of Directors for The Global Genes Project, a leading rare and genetic disease non-profit advocacy organization based in California. He is a frequent speaker on a variety of healthcare topics including small clinical trial design, new drug discovery, and patient reported outcome systems for more efficient clinical research.
Hugh aims to create a large scale cannabis clinical research clearing house in an effort to better elucidate the potential benefits of this cannabis plant. Until such time as there are readily available quality cannabis medicinal products on the market, this goal is nearly impossible. The creation of a pharmaceutical quality cannabis supply network is the first step towards this larger goal of building knowledge about using cannabis to improve health.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The guy giving the talk says that LSD has no medical use. He's making the same mistake he did with Cannabis. LSD has been used very successfuly in the treatment of alcoholism. There was a study done I believe at the University of Saskatoon. Something like a 50% success rate which is unheard of in addiction treatment. AA for example has a success rate of less than 5%. Cannabis and psycadelic drugs need to be removed from the schedule 1 designation so they can be studied properly.

Jerks all of you! You completely miss the importance of this compelling video. How about commenting on the main point here instead of completely overlooking it as you attempt to pursue your own pro-LSD agenda.....geeze!
Just so you know: after reading the June or July 1966 issue of Playboy Magazine with Timothy Leary (www.google.com/#q=Timothy+Leary+Playboy+interview),
I started my own psychedelic quest...happily so! After over 300 "trips" myself I know what you are trying to say about the deeply, soul-searching, alternate reality revelations, the mind-expanding spiritual elevations, the benefits, one can acquire from LSD.
But this is not the forum for such discussion...please, if you are able to stick to the point of the TED-X talk video here!

Thank you for sharing your story. In July 2021, at age 64, I was diagnosed with PCNS Diffuse Large B Cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. After a biopsy to remove the tumor from my brain, I underwent seven months of treatment, high dose chemotherapy and an ASCT (autologuous stem cell transplant). I was plagued with anxiety and fear, nausea and loss of appetite. My doctors prescribed medicine (including opiates) to combat the side effects and mental distress but they were largely ineffective. A friend gave me two 'joints' when I was at home, resting between chemo sessions. My anxiety disappeared and my other symptoms were greatly alleviated. Cannabis truly was an effective medicine for me as I battled cancer. I'm now nearly one year post ASCT and I'm disease free.

CBD is helpful in pain and can be ordered online as it's not illegal.
RSO type oil (rick simpson, phoenix teas) it's easy to make with a rice cooker or 'magical butter' machine, inexpensive alcohol and an hour, lots of youtube videos on how to make it..
it takes time to find a supplier of healthy cheaper trim but long term I highly suggest learning to grow your own, using something like an iDro ($500) over long haul, it's cheapest and healthiest and most controllably. You will need to do some R+D first though to figure out which strain works best for you.
It can also complement opiod treatment, making cannabis front line and opiod for breakthrough pain.

I personally have Fibromyalgia (chronic pain). I can tell you that I hold a red card and live in Colorado. I've used edibles in conjunction with FDA regulated narcotics for a little over three years now. I use very small amounts of it nearly every day and I get a lot more pain relief. Having this pain can sometimes be so severe it makes me vomit or almost. The infused marijuana has what's termed as cbd's. You get the pain relief without the cerebral change. If enough people and I'm thinking "millions" get involved in this legalization process? Then many more people can reap the benefits of it. I commend Hugh's bravery and dedication with his two daughters. We just need to come together as a nation and as a world to change the laws that are hindering the medical use of marijuana. Thank you for the video upload too.

You're my hero Hugh, I wish my parents had given me cannabis when I first got sick with my hypoparathyroidism at age 10, we didn't know what was wrong, I threw up daily and ended up with kidney stones and a lot of the other things, and by 15 I was going to die,I weighed 75lbs, well the doctors found out was wrong and removed my tumor, but I still suffer daily with my symptoms, my kidneys are literally completely covered in kidney stones for example, I tried weed when I was 16 I was desperate for relief and had heard about its medical properties, I then went and lived out in California after I was 17 on my own, where it was legal, I could work, I could be normal again, I had friends I played music and sang, I ended up with my own place, but after a series of some bad things happening in my personal life and due to expenses I had to go back to Arkansas where I was from at 19 almost 20 and I moved in with my 70 year old father, he said I could smoke weed but it's too hard to obtain illegally and I often would get taken advantage of, so I gave up on trying to get I felt guilty that my dad was paying over 200$ every week for me to do that and that sometimes I would get stolen from and etc, so I just quit and went back to being mostly bed ridden, I dropped most of my college classes after words and I hardly play music as much, I'm malnourished because it's hard to eat again, I have a hernia we found now too, I'm constantly in pain from my arthritis and it's just unbearable, I see doctors but they don't give me hardly anything that helps, they just do blood work and give me sleeping pills and nausea medicine that I'm completely immune to by now, nothing for my pain, I'm in so much agony the only thing that keeps me going is that I love my family so much my mom for example doesn't understand the weed and disliked it when I did it, but she took care of me for years and I can't let her down by giving up so I keep pushing on, hopefully my state legalizes it this year.

Mr Hugh Hempel thank you for such a powerful courageous speech you gave. I carry so much anger, & sadness for the DEA or the government towards legalising the use of medical cannibis. It’s all about politics & money. If they legalise it imagines how much money they would lose. This is unethical & only if doctors & pharmacists truly cared about their work suffering patients or instead just worry about the protocol put in place so many people wouldn’t be suffering so much & curing their sickness with toxic chemicals which will kill them away. I’m so frustrated cause I have been on this path with rheumatiod arithritis, fibromaglia & stenosis of spine now in my 50’s. After so much litigation & waiting cause Australia is so slow & afraid to take risks, I finally have received it. Tell me why is smoking & drinking legal & kills so many because too much money is involved. Truly does anyone care or is it all about the dollar.

To all of mankind!!! I have a son with rapid fluctuating bipolar disorder who rages constantly!!! he is literally an animal and we can't stand to be around him his daughters run from him etc. I recently got access to CBD oil. I gave the bottle to my son. He self administered and for an entire month until the oil was gone we literally had a baby on our hands!!!! All bipolar symptoms were gone!!! Unfortunately I lost my job could not purchase more CBD for now, and so when my son ran out my old bipolar son was back, sadly. I took a dose of CBD myself to see what the effects would be and I had a sense of complete serenity my entire day!!! This stuff works & I am thoroughly convinced that this is going to become "The Universal Medicine" Uncle Sam won't you kindly get out of the way!!! This is not a drug it is medicine it is beneficial and the amount of people that need it are too numerous to count!!!

    • @yairasevilla7456
      @yairasevilla7456 Před 7 lety +9

+GameandDestroy LSD, shrooms, peyote, is dangerous. But not in the same way as meth or heroin. Strong psychedelics like those can trigger mental illness in some people. For example, if you have a family history of Alzheimer's but at an older age, psychedelics can speed up the process and make you have it even sooner. For me, LSD, shrooms, all of that is great. I have mild depression and it really does lift up my mood, but for others, it may not be so great. Marijuana is just a high, a fucking great amazing drug that makes you float in the clouds and really think. But with psychedelics, it's incomparable. There's not enough research, not enough experiments, nothing. If you've taken the drug, you've questioned it. Every person I know who's taken psychedelics have questioned it. Like how the fuck did it just automatically make me so open minded and make me love the world. How does it do that? We don't know, I would love to know but we don't. There are risks to every drug, yes even weed.

For some seizures, a high CBD cannabis strain is best, BUT for other seizures, a cannabis strain with a balance of CBD and THC is best.....each patient is unique!
Also note that Cannabis kills cancer tumors too!!! Therefore some cancer patients are foregoing conventional cancer treatments and are finding success in using using only cannabis oil, in conjunction with a nutritional diet protocol and overall lifestyle change.

Yes, when he started with the CBD not helping completely and having to use regular meds, I thought he was going to say that they added back in a small amount of THC into the dosing - (so many seizure parents are finding out that they do have to do that) - Best on that would be Mechoulam's "Entourage effect" - (I don't think I can post a link here - but you can google Mechoulam and Entourage Effect, if you're interested.
