I miss Dick Cavett. He always was not afraid to brave these tough subjects.
Absolutely adore him...
@AJ P Actually, his liberal disposition is a big reason he's a great interviewer.
he’s still around fortunately.
As a Limey , this interview does expose Puritan America , even while they are trying to be Liberal.....in the 70s...
@@stevenmorley1639 ------------ don't tell anybody but some of the u.s. legislature branches have been documented as official hypocrites .....
Oh my god. No one is yelling. No one is interrupting each other. No one is just trying to stick in every stupid jokey-jab they can, and the audience is encouraged to shut up and listen. And it went longer than two minutes before lumping an ad in, so we actually got to hear something that sounded like a real conversation.
What a relic of an ancient, less-monetized media landscape.
Now you have Trump. What a moral degradation of the American society!
not to mention they're quoting D H Lawrence
“The more applause, the less show.”
Dick was
Yes...very politely sticking their noses into other’s business. These were the types whom Larry Flynt defeated. The people who believe they know better than others what is existentially “harmful” or not.

Back then you could Disagree, but NOT become disagreeable
Oh my goodness. She thought computers would be used to determine if porno was harming society. Little did she know computers would very quickly be the main source to obtain and view it!
She didn't think that would happen. She called it a fantasy of hers. A fantasy, as in something she would love to see happen but put little to no stock in thinking it actually would.
She was one dumb bitch lol
i know I was thinking that myself ! Now look at the addictions of it probably caused by computers......
She had many good points to make and it is a shame that the men on that panel seemed to treat her views as a joke. No respect there.
@Linda S. Martin sexism on parade -- even the audience won't support her bc women were seen as overly sensitive. She's a doctor! Cavett failed here.
Clearly they were not anticipating the internet.
Well obviously not. No one did.
oh no.. the fokin prophet here who knows about internet? HoW?????????
"The more applause, the less show."
what a quote that aged really well.... LOOKING AT YOU FALLON ... eh hes not the origin of the problem
Love that quote!
Wish I could go back in time and tell them what was going to happen
They would drop dead in their tracks.
Did anybody else notice how we've gone from public television, like this, that discussed ideas, to public television as it is, increasingly now, where people and events are discussed instead?
This was not on public television. This was on ABC.
You need to be on the internet more, there's currently lots of web shows and podcasts that have discussions like this. Increasingly?? Of course tvs been going to shit for years now. That's why there's an alternative.
@@ronflatter1235 Correct that it was not PBS, but it did air on the free public airwaves, at least that is how I read op's comment. TV is not the same today.
@@unfortunatebeam thank you. these people just hate the times they're living in so much or are lazy or something
um.. what?
I cannot get over how well spoken and respectful people are and the importance of the topic being discussed. How has society lost so much of its decency?

pornography :D
Emotion has replaced reason.
E to the Dawg because of porn!
Jerry Springer and Madonna.
Talk shows were so different then. People today don’t have the patience to listen to a whole conversation like this.
they do. podcasts
Young people this is called conversation.
A great conversation and good points made on both sides. While censorship is unacceptable in nearly any context, there is no doubt that the pornography industry has helped to fuel a serious, widespread addiction among men that often begins as teenagers. And it absolutely is degrading to its participants, regardless of them being “willing” or not.
It’s tragic that acknowledging something as sacred, as set apart, as so valuable that it ought not to be abused, is seen as unhealthy repression. It is repression, but it is repression of our human nature which desires nothing more than to seek our own pleasure at any cost.
Well put!
Then: People would discuss complex topics in turn.
Now: People scream at each other and walk off the set.
Immaturity
My uncle used to work for Bishop Moore. Nothing beats the elegant discourse and fascinating people the inimitable Dick Cavett always had on his shows. Guests allowed each other to speak and be listened to without interrupting. It's called conversation, youngsters!
One very qualified woman with ...authors?, and no opinions or contribution from actual pornographers or sex workers. Her point about ruthlessness and violence and watergate is an excellent one: I agree with her speculation about moral degradation but not standing ie whom has been harmed by porno. And Bishop Moore pointing out so well and paradoxically that repression and Puritan tendencies are at the root of an American perversion. What an era.
People underestimate the boring potential of pornography the sense of pornographic boredom that is so socially cancerous in effect
This is true👌🏾
She said "Young people have lost a sense of what might be hurtful to them" 💯 You mean like teenage boys trying to choke out their girlfriends during sex? That seems really healthy!
I was waiting for Anthony Perkins to speak
Me too.
Me too
I remember as a kid watching Dick Cavet show, Mike Douglas, Dihnna Shore, Merv Griffin, Phyll Donahue. Tv was mainly for adults back in the day, kids had PBS Mr. Rodgers, Sesame street, and we had to wait for a couple kid shows then back to big people stuff like the news. We watched then went outside to play.
Wow I never knew Dick Cavett had such deep and meaningful discussions on his show. Great that he's still around, and can see his work his now viewable all over the world on CZcams.
“Our wonderful computers” she said
We all should have heeded that woman's words.
Beautiful
Everything has two sides. What make you happy might also harm you. The point is to learn self control.

@@aidanfl the point is to live and figure things out, in my opinion. but that opinion has also two sides. you can agree or disagree

@fynes leigh Could you explain what this word means to you in any shape or form, in your imagination?
The word you’re looking for is capitalism
And here we have another great example of the nuanced, civil, intelligent and sometimes introspective discourse that we seem incapable of holding or even hoping for in today's society. I suspect that it is less about societal degradation from laxity and more from repressive societal control
1:46 Tony Perkins is either fascinated or horrified by what he is hearing.
The doctor is right but I'd lke to herar Anthony too. Amazing actor.

It's refreshing to see and hear mature and intelligent discussions on television. Of course, this was from the early 1970s.

Nice upload date though
cavett makes a good point about other vices being harmful, but legal, there is of course regulations, which the one fellow has a problem with, pretty sure he wouldn't want to do away with the drinking age, or letting people drink and drive. the lady also made a good point that everything is in varying degrees, and one size fits all laws like a total ban only creates an underground. and suppression does lead to a harmful black-market, like outlawing abortion, drugs, and alcohol.
it's better to legalize vices and regulate them, as opposed to an outright ban... freedom comes with a price and i think everyone wants the freedom to make their own choices.
Interesting that there is only one woman on the panel.
Less than 50 years ago. Dang.
Pornography has created a sex-crazed society. Too many young people have become addicted to constant sexual stimulation. Not to mention the distorted image of sex it presents them. Rampant ease of access to this filth will bring about society's downfall. Remember this comment.
Then, as now, many-most?-people didn't seem to understand the difference between facts and opinions.
When many-most?-people say "I know", they're flattering their opinions.
This taught me that only time really tells things most times
Yes.

Loved Dick Cavett. Ted Koppel comes to mind as another intelligent and composed journalist / host capable of facilitating volatile "discussions" like this.
The bishop surprised me

That was a pretty 'out there' conversation for 1973!

Teach people how to respect themselves and others . Cultural persuasion, not law governs morality.

in my mind by pointing out people always use the ''same old arguement' against regulation etc., the guy made the case for a more anarchistic individual liberty based social realm.
Not if you realize that the deregulation of the financial markets he referred to resulted in financial crisis. The sharks made his case.

Talk shows before were informative at least. Now talk shows are comedy shows ...
Plus, due to cancel culture , controversial topics cannot be discussed in depth out of fear the host, the guests, or the network’s vulnerability to be canceled and lose advertisers.
Laws cannot create morality because morality is internally motivated.

There most definitely are people harmed by pornography, especially as it exists today, but that doesn't mean it should be banned.
Thanks for posting this. The beautiful lady speaking sounds like she is living right here in 2020. Such a beautiful mind, she really stood out on that set.
Miss Purity had only way way of looking at it and had obviously never read a Harlequin Romance novel.
Frustrating to only hear a circular 11-minute clip of what could have been an interesting discussion. This is a great show, ill-served by the prematurely quick clip.

Wow, what at vacuum of ignorance! "The more things change the more they stay the same." The guy to the left of Mr. Cavett sounds like a lawyer for some porn mag.
Most people think viewing pornography is harmless. Truth is, it is not. It warps a persons view of the opposite sex, viewing women as nomore than sexual gratification and vice versa. It can turn others into perverts etc pedofiles etc. Its disgusting and not natural.

Ah, this is something I've heard of, Civil discourse!! Now you would have 4 SJW's on the panel shouting at anyone who disagree's with them. 🤣
I mean... it obviously hurts those acting in it.. but it's their choice.
it’s not always a choice a lot of women are forced into sex trafficking and there are videos where you can’t tell if the woman is consenting. also with things like onlyfans the idea of a sure fire way to make money has been sold to young teenage girls that have no idea what they are getting into. the industry preys upon young women chews them up and spits them out bc a lot of men are sick and attracted to minors. they want the youngest girls they can find. these girls’ brains are not fully developed and pornographers use this to their advantage.
1970s porn was quite disturbing😨
