Girl. When you lost. Keep on driving. Exploring is the best thing ever.
Indeed!!!
I'm a van lifer from NY, now in Arizona! And almost everything is an inconvenience in a vehicle/van than in an apartment! Before just jumping in your vehicle and doing van life, do it for a weekend first to see how you can handle it and like it! It does have many huge benefits too though!😁
Yep, I agree. Best thing is to try it out first!☺️
Good idea. Like a mini test run. Thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks for sharing!! Fun video listening to everyone’s idea of what works or it.
all the regular conveniences are harder for sure. I have found that cleaning your living space is easier, and I'm more motivated to do it more often bc of that.
@@marydawkins4190I was very messy in an apartment. In my van… it was so easy to keep clean or to clean it up. Everything has its place so you are usually putting it back because if you don’t you can’t do something else
So much of what we need and do are based on tradition. A friend told me once when we think we can't live without something remember someone somewhere is happily (note the word "happily") living without it. I practiced living in a tiny house for over a year in my apartment before actually having one built. Moving in and adapting was a breeze, because I had shaken off habits and was already living that lifestyle comfortably.
100% agreed!!!💪🏼💃🏻🙌🏼
Same. For example I had a small apartment kitchen but I only used the cutting board for counter space.
I think attitude is a major factor.
So many think of living a minimal life as deprivation because they're not motivated to see the gains - in finances, in space, in freedom, in opportunities.
And I think this applies to so many things in life - you can see them from 2 opposite pov's and this will determine whether you consider that thing a positive or a negative
I grew up camping my whole life, but the biggest hesitation I have about van adventuring is feeling safe overnight.
Valid concern. I think safety is important to think about wherever you are!☺️
It’s easy to imagine you won’t feel safe but if you’ve been camping your whole life, you might be surprised how comfortable you feel when you are actually out there. Don’t let fear stop you from trying it at all. Try a short trip somewhere less threatening. Get away from cities and always, always trust your instincts. Move to another spot if you feel at all uneasy.
I tried van life for the last month and a half, and am having to take a step back for a few months to get myself sorted, literally, as I have way too much "stuff" in the van currently to be comfortable. The whole process of clearing out all my "stuff" in my house and ridding myself of things that were precious to me but wouldn't be to anyone else was so very hard, and I'm just not yet done with that process yet.
One of the things I was really worried about, however, turned out to be a non-issue, and that was traveling with my cat. She has had very few problems adjusting, which is amazing, as she's never really traveled before.
In any case, it's going to be part-time traveling for now and re-evaluating as I go.
That is very wise!!! I’m glad to hear your cat adjusted. That is something I always wondered about for people with pets. Have a great new year’s 🥳
Great overall perspective on considering this lifestyle. It’s been a real learning experience for me and I find it rewarding 90% of the time. The 10% is on the rare occasion when I wake up to some major disturbance and choose to find another parking spot to sleep in. Now that I think about it, I love it 95% 😂❤
Great to hear! Yes, there are inconveniences no matter what the lifestyle…the main question is whether or not we can adapt 🙌🏼
This was very entertaining to hear other van lifers talk about adapting to living in a home on wheels. The key word to living the nomad life is adaptation. I knew when I bought my van I would need to adapt to the myriad changes with hygiene, diet, sleeping in a "box", spending hours alone, developing skills to help me perform activities not normal in my wheelhouse. So many things and situations that require me to think quickly and stay alert. Knowing my limitations, physically and mentally, is key to living a successful nomad life. Never go beyond or do any activity that you have not done before or you have doubts about your abilityto perform them. Getting injured that affects your physical abilities can result in taking you off the road. I love living in my van and if I have to adapt or make changes...so be it.
Yep! You got that right. Thanks for sharing. Have a great New year’s 🥳
I just got back from a five day camping trip in Dawson Texas. I definitely prefer being out on the road camping instead of at home in my tiny cabin. I love solitude and quiet.
Thanks for sharing!💃🏻
This series was fun to see everyone’s responses!!!! Love your videos like these!!!!
Yay! Thank you! I love putting them together hope you have a great new year’s 🥳🥳🥳
I agree with everyone's comments. But I think what is most important is being comfortable alone and being able to adapt to anything that happens. ❤️
Yes, very important☺️
Montana has a lot of area without service.Just about everyone I know carries A map.But you have to know how to read one.Good info.
Yes, very true!☺️
Thanks for this reality check! Instagram makes it look so easy and glamorous, but there's a lot to this lifestyle that you don't know until you try it. :) It's not for everyone.
So true! Glad it was helpful☺️
I love this video; it just confirmed that I'm ready! Your's and Bunny's videos have given me the courage to try out car camping. It was easier than I expected and by the third time, I slept so peacefully. I still have a stationary job and a lot of downsizing to do, but vanlife is in my future! 😁👍
Nice…Go for it!💃🏻🥳🙌🏼😎
I love van life but realized very quickly I couldn't do it with my 90lb àmerican Bulldog, so I bought a house and my daughter will watch her while im away. I do feel more comfortable having a place to go "home" to. Planning a trip back east in early Spring, i cant wait!
That is awesome! Happy New Year!🥳💃🏻💪🏼
Bring okay with surprises, and not catastrophizing seem like valuable things to have with you.
Coolheadedness is a quality I am appreciating more.
Great advice, all. We keep traditional road atlas in our converted cargo trailer. If we ever had a worst-case scenario and our phones were no longer usable, that atlas will be handy.
Yep. I get a new one every year😜
Dee, you have a great group of friends! Loved seeing and hearing them all! I recognized almost everyone!
Yes. I’m very grateful. ☺️
Showering is a really over used modern convenience. I think we bathe far too often. I've found that my hair and skin are much happier with far less bathing and 99% less soaping up. My hair especially loves super infrequent washing, mostly rinse it well.
I agree 100% 🥳
This was very helpful for me to hear. I dream about going on the road. My head is there, my heart is a little torn. The unknown is just a bit scary.
I’m glad it was helpful. Yep, hang in there… if it’s meant to be, it’ll happen!☺️🙌🏼💃🏻💪🏼
Love this video! I am just starting my car camping adventure. One trip in the books and the second one in January. Fear of personal safety (car camping solo) is my biggest issue. I have great intuition so I do not know why I am nervous. Excited and nervous. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
You can do it! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 Yea, just follow your intuition. It’ll be nerve racking for a little while. Then, you’ll wonder why you ever worried😝
Michelle: I agree with Dee. I was nervous at first but no more. My dad gave me some advice when I was a young girl that still applies today at age 57 and in this world we live in. He said more meanness or bad things happen after dark so be somewhere safe before dark and stay put. I’ve adapted that advice in van-camping too.
There are many options for self defense. A solar motion light for outside the van is a good idea. Also, i took a gun safety course and got my license to carry and it changes the safety equation big time. Even with that, intuition is the most powerful tool you can use. If you dont feel safe, then leave.
As a woman travelling alone, intuition is the greatest weapon you can possess! If a place doesn't feel right for overnighting, then drive on, no matter how tired you are or how late it is. I lived in my motorhome for 6 years, travelling in the UK and Western Europe, and in all that time, I only had one incident in Portugal where a guy was hanging round the back of my van in the early hours. I think he's was probably after my bike on the back, but to be on the safe side, I got up and drove 45 mins at 1am back to a place I'd stayed the night before!
I've never heard another "on the road-er" cover this topic. Excellent stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been living in my RV now for almost a year and I have found I don't like moving lol I'm 62 and retired and for the past 5 years this is what I wanted to do. I'm not mechanically inclined and have learned just how expensive everything is on these things!! I know I have been loving living in the campgrounds but there's a lot more to it than I realized. So I've decided to put my RV up for sale and buy a travel trailer and just live in a campground. Thank you for talking about this I think a lot more information needs to be shared about what it all actually really is.
Lol…well, that is something I’m glad you found out🤭 good solution, though. Hope you have a great New Year and everything goes well!!!
Great info here !
12 years ago I loved my 5 months road trek . I was in my car , sometimes staying with a friend or relative. One month in an Ashram in Monroe.NY. I definitely drove places that I'd never been before from never got lost. Stayed in motels some , a Hermitage for few days ,two different Monasteries too. My HOSTEL experience was good too Often I was alone for many days. Loved the driving across country . I chose to drive mostly in good weather. Never at night.
Hiked a FALLS in Pennsylvania where I'd never been before. Loved it all !
Now I'm older with a few body challenges; eyes ,ears ,joints so even tho I wish to travel more , feeling hesitant .
Your videos ,interviews are great info for anyone considering "VAN LIFE" extended travel etc.
Thanks Dee for all you share.
Thank you for sharing your journey with us. I definitely understand the hesitation. I’m glad you enjoyed the interviews☺️ Happy New Year🥳💃🏻🚗
What is the way to handle mailbox requirements. Where or what do you use for mail. I love to watch you and your friends along the way.
Carol - I was wondering the same thing.
Thanks for another intriguing video Dee. Your inquisitive nature and friendly style is disarming. You educate, entertain and connect with us very easily. God Bless you and your travels.
I always appreciate your gracious comments! Happy Nee Year, Brian🥳
Brian: Well said and I agree!
@@LadyBugout Happy New Year Dee! I hope our paths cross next year when I get my van and retire.
Don't be afraid of a mess, and don't be afraid of your own feces. It gets messy in your tiny home on wheels some time. To those who have a port a potti (?), beware of the fluids and the mess coming out of your body. Sometimes these do smell ..... and it won't be the smell of coffee!
Very true😝
Thank you for your videos this last year...God Bless you for this next year.
👍😜👍
Thank you so much🥳
You are an amazing person. Truly. Life is short and this is not a dress rehearsal.
Thank you☺️
Here at my off-grid cabin in Michigan during the winter I use a five-gallon bucket with a trash bag in it to use the bathroom instead of going out into the cold, I will then take that trash bag out and throw it into a pit and pour some of my chainsaw gas on it and light it on fire. I do the same with my regular trash and after my pit is full I cover the hole back up with soil..during the summer I fertilize a hole near a tree helping nature grow. My suggestion for van life would be to do much of the same having a five-gallon bucket with a trash bag in it to use the bathroom and then tie the bag up until you get into a wooded area and put the bag in a hole and throw some gas or something else flammable on it like lighter fluid and light it on fire, after the fire has finished burning then cover the hole up with soil... I sold my off-grid cabin here in Michigan and I'm about to move into the back country of Texas as an outdoor living enthusiast, there I will be pretty much fertilizing trees all year round but for the cold environment burning it really helped.
Sounds like a great system!
Yep, this all good advice, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!☺️
I really appreciate the reality Q&A from van lifers who aren't doing it for the sake of seeking attention.
I do have a question about something that has crossed my mind.
The question would be "To open the door?... or to keep quiet and ignore it?". Meaning, if someone knocks on your door (especially if you're a single female) do you open it and see what they want? ...or do you keep everything locked up and hope they go away? ... and what kind of parking situations and locations would determine your answers and why?
Do NOT open the door! But, it will be difficult to hide the fact you are in there. If it is the police, they will identify themselves, and you can ask them to show you their badge-they will. If it is anyone else. Talk to them through the van walls. And if it is a security guard or park ranger telling you to move on-let them know you will do that asap. If it is anyone else. Tell them you notified authorities and either wait there or move to a safer place. I would never open the door.
Thank you for this question and answer - I fell asleep last night wondering the same thing. This helps.
Got a nice campervan that'll sit in the garage until spring so I'm not a vanlifer but love taking camping trips when the weather is nicer. I would go crazy being stuck in a van during extreme hot or cold temperatures, it's hard enough in a nice house. I think my wife and I enjoy and appreciate it more when your not doing it everyday. Good luck.
That is awesome to do what suits you best! Hope you have a great new year 🥳
@@LadyBugout have a great year also and stay safe!

The best!!!
Appreciating and enjoying nature seems valuable.
Yes😎
I just celebrated two years of Van Dwelling 🥂✌️
It's a pretty good lifestyle.
Nice! 🥳
My wife and I live full time in a 26 year old motorhome. One thing is one of you better be mechanical and handy unless you have the money for mechanics that can come to you.
That is excellent advice!!!☺️
All great points and from experienced van lifers. I consider myself a traveler, not a van lifer but even for a part timer all the things mentioned are relevant. I love being on the road and experiencing new things but I love the creature comforts of home and the ease of doing things like showering, laundry, waste disposal etc. I can easily do all that for days or weeks but not indefinitely. Happy New Year Dee. Thanks for another great video
Thanks for sharing! Yes, I think it is for life on the road in general. Happy New Year🥳
It would be nice to share this video in so many women's groups on FB. Some of the things I read women post on FB about their fears or concerns really worry me for them

Hello Dee, You are so smart from the bed remodel to the advice at the end. Happy New Year 🎇
Thank you! You too!🥳
I love this show, down can use creek water to wash clothes in her little washer/spinner instead of her potable water. All the questions and answers are great. It gave me so much to ponder.
Great idea! She is in cities a lot, so I’m not sure if that would work. But definitely a good suggestion for when she is out of the city.🥳
Tonight will be my first night in my prototype suv set up. There are still one or two more things left for me to get but I’m doing a trial run.
Years ago I slept in my car while doing two delivery jobs. Looks like I might be doing something similar again.
How fun! Enjoy every minute of it☺️
I definitely need a boiling hot shower ideally twice a day
Love these types of videos, great bunch of experts. I can picture myself fitting right in to your little tribe. I only 'vanlife' on weekends, but I wish I could go for longer, but I also like coming home to my sticks and bricks. Well, mainly to my hubby who is definitely not into camping.
Lol, yes… good thing you like to go home for your hubby 😜

Glad it was helpful! ☺️
Omg! I was watching the scrolling credits and listening to your friend and he mentioned Northern Exposure! I must meet this young gentleman! I'm a huge fan of the show and I have watched it several times all the way through and recently started rewatching. Hehe please tell him he's not the only huge fan of the show when you see him again! Happy trails!
That’s funny!!!😆
Great video! I didn't know what to expect from the title. More than anything it will help people decide what type of vehicle they might need, for example private shower peeps might need an RV with high fresh water capacity. Social peeps might need to travel in a caravan and carry walkie talkies. Working peeps are going to need places to sit other than the front driver and passenger seats...and so on. Very helpful!
Glad it was helpful! ☺️
Hey Ms. Dee ! All very good and valid points folks should consider. We aren't full timers, still much of this applies. I camped as a solo motorcyclist a lot of years, that experience made the trials of shuttle bus camping a breeze. If you can't be comfortable in your head alone, maybe you should consider a different lifestyle. Here's wishing you miles and miles of smiles in '23 ! Take care of you !

Glad you enjoyed! Happy new year🥳
Great topic. And you all covered it very well. The only thing I would add, and this affects me occasionally. If you are out on your own for extended periods of time with loved ones back at a home base. I'm a retired senior and don't need to stay at my home base for any particular reason other than my wife lives there and does not want to camp travel. I love it, and she is totally cool with me doing it. After all, we have been married 30 years. But I do wonder if I should go home more often. I'm constantly torn with that part of it. In a few years I know I will have to go home for good. It's not loneliness. It is thinking I should be somewhere else.
Good point. Thank you for sharing it. That is always important to consider.☺️
Totally agree. I feel torn between home and the road too
@@krishoffer8984 Yep, it's a real thing. Bob Wells dealt with it and talked about it in his early videos. Until one day, he simply didn't go back home. I think some people are just born with a Nomad heart.
I grew up in the Nomad life and can’t wait to get back to it. My husband, however, is a stick and mortar stationary guy, so it’s going to be an interesting…adventure. 🦋
@@daylenestaneart775 Yes, we live for that sense of adventure. You are lucky if your husband is cool with you going out to adventure. So much to see, so little time. Safe travels.
Simplicity is the way to go 💫
🎊🎇 *Happy New Year* 🎆🎉
So true! 💃🏻
It seems important to have activities or pastimes or hobbies or loves that you can enjoy on the road.
Yes! That is a great point!
Great points

You are so welcome☺️
Happy new year Dee and everyone 🎉💥🍺 the vans packed and we’re off to Nug Nug for a week of camping in the bush 👏👏👏😘😍🥰❤️👁👁🙃🙃🐕🦺🙏🦘🐨🇦🇺
Have fun! Sounds like a an awesome trip! 🥳💃🏻🚗
Hi again, yeah, I'm glad you made this video because a lot of vanlifers are always selling this lifestyle ONLY in a positive light and as you well know, there's a lot of work involved. At least these folks have a place to park over the winter and don't have to constantly be thinking about moving. Take care, enjoy the holiday and I'll see you 'on here' next year !!
Happy New Year 🥳
