  • Driving in rush hour traffic with a Tilton twin plate clutch. The internet told me this car wouldn't be driveable on the street, but here we are 8+ years later. It's certainly not like driving a stock car - but it's not too bad once you get the hang of it.

    I bought a car that has twin disc and it feels like I'm learning to drive a manual all over again. I hate having to be at a complete stop, feels like I'm riding my clutch so much just to get it moving in 1st gear (also reverse). I am now one of those annoying guys that seems to always rev up my engine for no reason lol. Thanks for the tips and making this video!

      I feel exactly the same after installing a Tilton ST-246 twin disc racing clutch rated 1250 ftlbs just about a week ago. It’s a pain going uphill in a stop and go traffic😝 Pair it with a RPM B3 cam with some surging and it’s another challenge. I like the way it grabs when you’re racing, there’s no slip at all. Other than that, it is just a matter of time getting used to driving it in heavy traffic.

    Ended up with what must be an agressive ceramic twin disc spec supertwin in my C4 Corvette when I swapped it from auto to 6 speed.
    It was included in a bunch of swap parts I purchased from a partout. No info was given about the clutch. I figured it would be fairly aggressive, but it truly is like learning to drive stick again.
    This setup has no mercy. It is almost like an on/off switch. I have gotten used to it though. Now when I get in anything else with a stick, it feels extremely odd.
    Launching at the track on street tires was also a bit of a learning curve.

      @@CanadianGearhead I'm vaguely familiar with the area. I used to drive for a company out of Oswego, NY that hauled fire hydrants out of a plant in Kingston, ON. Quite often, the quickest route to my destination was across the 401 and over the Ambassador bridge into Detroit. It was always bizarre... like going from "Pleasantville" into Fallujah.
      Here's an amusing international anecdote; I once ran into a Canadian driver down in Laredo, TX... about as far from home as he could get. We had an epic conversation. He was "eh"ing everything, I was "y'all"ing everything, I'm sure it would have made quite the comedy sketch.

    This is exactly what i was looking for. A person that might be just as crazy as me with the parts choice. I am currently looking for flywheel and clutch options for my next daily driven car. And its kind of hard to find what i want because im putting an audi v8 in front of a bmw transmission. So no of the shelf clutch and pressureplate options are available. Actually no affordable flywheel options either. But the main issues i was thinking of where is it going to be impossible to drive in stop and go traffic, but it dosnt seem to be worse then my ceramic 4 puck in my current car. Its all about good clutch control and then it should be fine right?
    But the other issue i was thinking about is noise. Cant really tell to well from the video. But how bad is the noise? My current clutch is the unsprung 4puck wich sometimes makes so much noise, its sounding like the gearbox is actually falling apart. And then you push the clutch pedal and its all silent. And with the twinplates some people say they are worse, some say they are not. But you seem to be 1 of the only guys driving it on the street, so you might be the best source for this information.

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  Před 5 lety

      I can only comment on the cerametallic Tilton, but it's pretty loud. It's quiet at idle but rattles when you push the clutch in. Lots of noise on decel and loud squawking in reverse (and in forward gears when it gets hot). I could definitely see it being annoying for a daily driver. I think a clutch with carbon plates would be quieter and easier to drive, but at a higher cost.

    • @gabbermaikel
      @gabbermaikel Před 5 lety

      @@CanadianGearhead with the squawking i think you mean a sort of screaming noise right? But that is probably when you ride the clutch? My current 4 puck is doing that as well. But im not driving in reverse the whole day, so not too much of a problem. But the noise on decel might be a problem. Might have to think about it.
      And the price of a carbon clutch is so stupidly high i dont even consider it an option at this point. For the price of that i could add a shitload of insulation to the car wich would also help against heat.
      And i also looked at some of the dual plate options the germans allready use for their cars. The bmw m5 e60 with a manual trans has a dual plate clutch. But it can only handle 700nm, and i expect to end above that, more towards the 700ft/lbs your clutch should be able to handle. And there are very few clutches that can handle that.

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  Před 5 lety

      You can hear the noise I'm talking about in reverse in my 5 Things I Hate video. But it also makes the screaming noise when you ride it too haha. The noise on decel would probably be the thing that bothered me most if I drove it daily. It sounds like the trans is going to blow up. Sort of similar to straight cut gear whine, but sounds more like death.
      It's a tough call because driving a car that highly modified daily is going to mean making a lot of compromises. Personally I'd just build the car to function properly and buy a beater to drive daily.

  • @aftastosk6016
    @aftastosk6016 Před 5 lety +1

    I don't think that the race clutch is that difficult to use in traffic once you are used to. And it certainly helps quick changes which is what you hope for when you drive a heavily boosted car with a turbo lag. Actually, I don't think that turbo lag is that bad as you wanted to describe in your earlier video. The engine is running smoothly and I get the impression that in a trackday it would be awesome. The only thing that i didn't like in your car is the ride that looks really stiff and bumps and shakes...If you can afford it you should consider installing air suspension. (Greetings from a MR2 W30 owner) EDIT - I haven't watched the video 5 Things I HATE About My TOYOTA MR2 TURBO, I am going to do it now)

    • @CanadianGearhead
