Im a 20+ year pilot, just getting back to the cockpit after an 11 year hiatus due to medical. Its not like starting completely over but close. I find your videos help me feel comfortable in the cockpit when dealing with ATC and talking on the radios. Helps with the rust as well. Thank you!!
I like going back to these older videos from time to time. Good stuff.
@ 21:40, LOL! You actually come to a STOP sign, and cross a street! That's awesome!!!
ThisMatt coolest car ever
Single pilot IFR with no auto-pilot...good job. Respect.
As a fellow IFR pilot, I want to thank you for showing non-pilots how safe it can be when you follow the procedures by the book. Nice job and great piloting skills.
4 years late commenting on this video, but couldn’t resist 😂 at 21:43 you’re lucky there were no cops around to catch you running straight through that stop sign without coming to a complete stop 😂
8:43 epic shot entering and exiting the clouds.
Very well done IFR vid. Thanks
excellent! I love your professionial approach to safety. something all pilots can take note.
I know it is pretty randomly asking but do anyone know of a good place to watch newly released tv shows online?
@Camden Mayson flixportal xD
@Drake Maddox Thanks, signed up and it seems like a nice service :) I appreciate it!
@Camden Mayson you are welcome =)
Awesome, a real procedure turn. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent stuff as usual.
Another great video Josh!
Great video! One suggestion: Could you add a picture of the approach plate on half of the screen or somewhere during your approach so we can see what your talking about? Would be a great addition... Keep up the great work!
Nice overview of the IFR procedure. Thanks.
That ending hit me right in the feels. Godspeed Skyhawk
I don't know of you did the explanation of the ILS procedure for your benefit or ours, but it was great!
Awesome video. I enjoy the longer, more content filled videos.
Thanks, good open perspective!
Great video and great flying. Thanks for sharing....
Hey man, love the videos. Keep em' coming! Love the footage. Love flying!!
Josh, I'm very impressed by your progress. Nice job!
Another great video ! Thank you for the atc audio with them
Nice approach! It's great to see such talent in pilots. Great video captain Josh! ;)
I Love your vídeos. Keep up that good work
Enjoyed the ride along!
r aeronca one thing they weren’t riding they where flying
Your videos make my day
I'm somewhere in the middle of my IFR training. I found this very impressive!
Love these videos
Great video, Josh! Love the narration. Flying is fun! Have a great time in Mena! (The Old Biker Guy)
Thanks for sharing. Nice cloud shape of a dog's head at 8:36.
Really good!
Very interesting and informative. Thanks!
This is just so good. I used to fly a Cessna 172 out of Archerfield Aerodrome South of Brisbane city, Queensland, Australia, in the 1980’s with the Royal Queensland Aero Club (RQAC). Not as much technology and instrumentation back then, more flying by the seat of your pants! Great to watch this video and check out the amazing technological advances in micro-computing assistive devices now. Very capable pilot is always the crucial factor, however, and a pleasure to watch this one here go through his paces. The 172 was always my favourite aircraft back in the 80’s! Cheers from Australia! 👍😲🤗
Very good.I have learned a lot from this video.Thank you.
Your most interesting video yet!
+MrAviation101 I wanted give you a tip for you since you're working on your CFI, or CFII. On a procedure turn it is not written in the regs to time that portion. Just as long as the procedure remains within the protected area of the approach, ex: 10 nm. I made that mistake on my CFII ride, and was corrected.
Love the videos, safe flying!
nice video as always :)
regards from germany
Very nicely done! You will make an excellent professional pilot if that is your ambition.
very nice videos I like the cessna 172 N80991
Good one, thanks kid.
Nice job! I tried to follow on an approach plate. I don't think I did too bad. lol. Love the videos!!
Great video even if i didn't understand much of the lingo. I know nothing about flying airplanes but it quite obvious that you do. Congrats to you and a fun video me me. Thanks
Great video. Greetings from MMSP.
Love it
Nice video. I appreciate your professionalism and obvious love of flying. I know you've been to Oshkosh...but if you're in town again for the airshow let me know if I can help with any of the "details". If you need some ballast for the return...I've got a lot of family around the D/FW area as well!lol! Good luck in your future endeavors
I had an interesting thought: If you were to attach one of the cameras to the aircraft with a gimbal mechanism and initialize the gimbal on the ground, we would better be able to get a sense of the aircraft's attitude from that view. Could be a cool effect.
One day I want to grow up and be just like you....A STUD.Start Safe, Stay Safe
You will love your life once you get your A/P installed! Next investment? Aspen EFD 1000? I can't imagine flying the cutlass without it anymore!
It would be nice if you could show the approach plate while you're doing the approach and show the plane as it progresses on the approach plate
We(ZME/Memphis Center) can't vector MrAviation for an ILS approach because the localizer is not depicted on our radar scopes, unlike HOT Springs, therefore there is nothing to vector to.
I can't wait to get my IFR rating
Great job. I did notice that you skipped the intermediate altitude of 3600 after intercepting the localizer outbound. That makes for a quite speedy descent of 1100 feet from 4200 to 3100, instead of a nice, easy descent of 500 feet. The devil is in the details! Great job overall, though!
Can you give us a foot-cam on take off and landing? You almost never see rudder work on these videos on youtube :)
I REALLY envy you... 8^) I got my ticket back in the mid-1980's and I REALLY miss flying (I can't pass the medical now) I used to fly a piper PA-46 most of the time. I used to fly for business (I was a Project Consultant in the Communications Industry at the time) (now I spend most of my time composing and conducting orchestral and choral music). The most fun was taking my girlfriend out to dinner to Montreal or Washington, DC, flying her there. Although a close second was ferrying aircraft with my instructor. I got to fly all sorts of aircraft from brand new 172's from the factory all the way up to an MU-2 transatlantic. Boy, what I would give to be young again... 8^)...
I would offer food for thought. At video time marker 18:55 you cancelled IFR on the approach. I would suggest always continue to landing with the IFR clearance. If something unexpected happens and you need to reenter IFR or even if you need some emergency help and cannot contact tower, no longer having a clearance will only add complexity and delay to the situation and go-around. Also there is value in practicing closing out a flight plan when on the ground. Flying a real approach to minimums , landing at a major and busy airport, and then forgetting to close out a flight plan because of the habit of doing it in the air is embarrassing at best.
Josh, when you cancel IFR in flight, just make sure you are within VFR limits (>500,
You'd be breaking a Reg if you're not compliant with VFR minimums!
love aero county, I live 3minutes from 35 ;)
I really enjoyed this Josh. Must have been a very satisfying flight. I like your explanations en route. Would love to know how you write down the clearances (presumably in shorthand) if you ever have time to explain. Thanks.
I second that. I am just about half-way through my private right now but will immediately start my instrument training after. I am struggling a little with my shorthand right now but am just dreading when the IFR clearances come.
an instructor should explain the acronym to you by which you get all IFR clearances. After that, it's all a matter of whatever gets it down on the page AND you understand it later.
The acronym is CRAFT: Cleared to: an airport or to a waypoint (clearance limit - i.e., expect further clearance prior to arrival or hold), Route: route of flight may be simple like Direct to, or by Victor airways, to VOR's (radio beacons), to waypoints, or a combination; Altitude: an assigned altitude, or to start initial climb, then on course altitude, usually to allow traffic to go along their assigned course, or arrival or departure procedures from airports; Frequency: your initial frequency to contact Departure after leaving the control of the tower, then transferred to Enroute ATC facilities, then maybe an Arrival ATC or TRACON (terminal radar control usually in larger arrival areas like Dallas, Seattle, NYC, etc.), Transponder: code 4 numbers, gives altitude and position ID to ATC. The shorthand can be found in the AIM - download free from FAA.gov.
Paul Bergman Thanks Paul. That's great. I have an IR(R) rating the UK, and this was not taught for that IR(light) rating!
never mind i see it now in the description haha
Painter? Lol. Very nice 👍
when you set takeoff thrust, i heard a high pitched sound. i don't know if it was just my laptop
As always such a cool video. Is it possible to post a screen grab of the approach plate so we can see the procedure as well?
skyvector.com/files/tpp/1607/pdf/06002IL27.PDF
G'day from Australia.
Are you and your father planing on getting the interior updated from the brown to anything matching the exterior?
Keep up the good videos.
Great to see you doing a vid, Josh. Do you still fly 2 or 3 times a week? I don't see so many vids now. You working or still in school?
Have you been itched by the airline bug? Do you think it's better to stay with the CPL rating or to make the next step on ATP rating to get more experience? Many pilots want to do it to take experience here in my country, so I'm looking for a good advice on the planning for my career in the years to come.
what was wrong with the paint also id love to see the sign on that road yield to all airplanes
What version of iPad do you use Josh? and I am assuming you have to have 4g data plan in order for ForeFlight to work right??
Outstanding, Thanks
Do you use the GoPro brand battery backpack. If not which one do you use?
Do you have new seats?
Does he calculate the tailwind by comparing the ground speed to the airspeed? Also what instruments give him those numbers? Thanks.
Josh when you were starting out flying in im assuming your high school years how often did you fly? like once a week?
2:38 MENA. 20:47 Final ap
Flaps on takeoff? I guess I don't use flaps much, heh.
+MrAviation101 GPS receptor is really necessary?
What paint body shop do you use ?
Was that a procedure turn to get established on the localizer? Was that a published IAP? I’m not familiar with a 30deg then 45deg timed turn to reverse course to get established. Could someone help me out here please?
Which stratus are you using? 1s or 2s?
What would have you have to do if you needed to go missed? I imagine you'd go back to approach and pick up another IFR clearance? It seems like a mess.
I'm a private student here, so I'm probably missing something.
I loved the video :)
As soon as he cancelled IFR he was operating under VFR rules. Most people don't go missed when operating under VFR they just go around in the pattern lol
+Jakob Stuber right, but I was wondering what would happen if pattern altitude is higher than 500ft below the ceiling.
+Nacho Soto fair point
my aunt lives in mena
how tall can u be to fit into a c172 or height limit
on the IFR clearance was he giving you radials to follow??? i've never heard of a clearance been given that way
Thats what I'm trying to figure out. That was weird.
what's the white device with (3) green lights on it just to your left attached to the window?
ADS-B receiver to get weather and traffic on his ipad
Hey Josh whats the name of the iPad mount you`re using? Thanks!
I don't know which mount Josh is using, but I use this one for my mini and it works great: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YYZH0U0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Mena ,AK the Iran/Contra cocaine ,Clinton/CIA airport Barry Seal operated in the 80's
I was going to mention that too. A lot of witnesses (teens) bit the dust on the railroad tracks there when they were discovered. Clinton/Bush money laundering.
Have you been to Amarillo Texas ?
🎤🎤is this the way to Amarillo,
Every night I've been hugging my pillow,🎤🎤
Sorry, had to.... Ok I'll leave.
If u are cleared direct somewhere on ifr, do u have to take a straight course? For example if u encounter class B airspace, do u go through it or around it? Sorry im not a pilot so i dont really know this stuff that much
If on an IFR flight plan you do not need explicit clearance to enter a Bravo. So yes, direct is a straight line.
Steven Schwartzberg so i would pretty much be handed off to the controller controlling the B airspace as im going through ut?
+krelshell4 corrext
Regional is definitely not like PHX (aka ZNY) :D
where did you buy your mount for the ipad? cause I need one!!
Get them off eBay
Francisco Bonari "RAM Mounts"
I'm a student pilot and i was wondering what app or whatever is that on your iPad?
Zach Uminski foreflight
Josh, do you not have an autopilot?
I was going to ask the same thing. I'm still interested to know the answer. I would certainly want one to decrease the mental work load.
Have you flown an ILS to minimums in IMC? The first time is a rush.
Yes!
He even recorded it
jchang133 Link?
Is it normal to Cancel IFR when flying IFR into an uncontrolled field?
Very common
A pilot can have both an IFR and VFR combined flight plan. You list that in your filed flight plan. Start either one and then transfer over to the other when needed for weather or simply to have ATC take you into busy airspace. You can cancel IFR anytime you can fly to your destination under VFR conditions (cloud clearances and visibility requirements) and descend and land safely in a routine manner. You would not normally do this into an airport that had a large volume of controlled traffic. In Class B airspace, you must be cleared to enter, and then you are in contact w/ ATC at all times. You can fly under the shelf of Class B, or C airspace a without contacting them in VFR conditions. These are in explained in the AIM; download free from FAA.gov.
that would be funny if he picked up like 80 lbs of ice, but I the plane was totally fine, and flew normal, but with so much ice build up.
1:05 Is it a requirement to be able to do checklists that quickly? 0.0
Not a requirement, but the before takeoff checklist in a Cessna 172 is very simple and that's his plane - he's done that checklist literally hundreds of times.
Why was the outer marker beeping for so long?
I had it on high sensitivity
that was a geiger counter
Hi MrAviation101! How are you doing? I would like to know how is the app that you have on your iPad called?
Thanks! Mauro
The app is called ForeFlight
Its in the description
+morgs77cool thanks!
+JoeTheShmo Thanks!
Mauro Quaggiotto your welcome
Don’t drink and fly kids
Don’t text and fly kids
Kids don’t do drugs and fly kids
:D
Just out of curiosity, why did we make a right hand procedure turn?
That's what this particular approach calls for on the approach plate.
+MrAviation101 cool, that's what I figured. My plate shows the barb being a left hand turn for some reason. Thanks for the response!
+Brandon D so the bard that you see indicates a 30 degree left turn. You turn to that heading and fly outbound for 1 minute (generally) then you execute a right hand turn of 180 degrees to intercept the final approach course. Make sense?
+MrAviation101 roger, appreciate the clarification. Solid videos!
+MrAviation101 Josh wouldn't that be a 45-180?
Please add subtitles CZcams subtitles are not accurate
Yo man! Just got into flying school. Any beginner tips?
Have a lot of money!
always try your best and have fun at the the end all the hard work will pay off!!!
And don't be afraid to ask atc for anything you need help with. That's what they're there for
+Tallishyeti27 It is the instructor which may be in the way😂
+food Is awesome what part of the country do you fly in
