Construction diary & on ride/off ride shots of The Smiler. The Smiler is Alton Towers new £18 million investment for the 2013 season. The ride will be a record setter with 14 inversion - more than anywhere else on the planet. It will Marmalise your mind & body with 5 different effects contained to the inside building and on 5 'legs' off the main Marmaliser hub:
The Inoculator - Large needles that spray water
The Giggler - Fine mist that cover the track
The Hypnotiser - Spinning discs with illusions on them
The Tickler - Near miss spinning brushes
The Flasher - Flashing lights as you pass by on two occasions on the outside track

Also, they aren't just props, you get squirted from the syringes, you get 'flashed' by the bright lights, you go through the mist of the 'giggler' etc etc, and it's all tying in to the story. It's not just random stuff, it's a well developed theme. To me a theme for a ride is more than just realistic looking rocks, tunnels, CGI screens etc - to me it's about having a cool original story and having relevant elements in the pre shows and final ride experience.
I think it's a world class coaster.

In 2011 I built a roller coaster in RCT3 that had 14 loops and I said "OMG! If someone ever made a 14-looper in real life, that would be awesome!"
2 years later, they make this :D

I'm meaning it's one of the best themed regular coasters like I said in my previous post, not most extensively themed ride full stop. I've been to Orlando and other places, I'm not talking out of my arse - it's my opinion. The theme is original and interesting in my opinion, I like the story, I like the way it's been put together. It's genuinely not like another coaster out there. Not a simple movie tie-in or runaway train. Crane your neck in, there's no need to be confrontational mate, smile ;)

Obviously everyone was just coming up with World First's to cover what was advertised. The plans tried to throw us off the inversion record but once we were up to speed during construction it became clear we were getting 14 inversions. Just seems people thought that would be the 'World Beating' part instead of the 'World's First' as advertised around the park on banners.
We may still be in for some minor surprises come opening day on the 23rd May. Maybe a pre-show in the indoor section? Smile!
I see what you're saying and understand what you're getting at, I just think the theming is already much more elaborate and interactive than pretty much any other regular style roller coaster in the world. It flashes you, sprays you with water, gives you some near misses, has a big screen, has noises etc. It would be an un-needed but nice bonus on top if there was stuff going on in the queue etc, and there may well be as there is for other rides (perhaps a bit of interactive fun and a preshow).

4:38 This seems to indicate that their is more to the ride than meets the eye, as i have said before, i cant see Wardley happy to bow out with just a 14 Loop Record that will be broken and Gimmick Theme....
This will be the Worlds First 14 Loop 4D Roller Coaster and i think the que and entrance to indoor section before you get on the train will have some surprise in store for us all.
I seen them on Halloween omgggg recording to🐼💘in 2013 I think or 2012 can't Rerember but I Defo seen them gutted I Dident get a pic with them...,

its a break run and its clear, you can see the maintenance shed next to it and the storage track
No it’s at the start. The indoor inversion can be seen behind the piece of track being put in. It’s the base hill lift

But 2 years after...Alton Towers Smiler had a crash because they hired someone who wasn't fully trained and the empty cart stopped and then he full cart collided into it and the peoples legs were sadly crushed....
Please like this video if you have heard of this...ToT I feel really bad for those people who lost their legs...

By Gimmick i mean i am sure he is not wanting to have the Theme and What essentially are themed props on the Marmaliser Legs, I think the Marmaliser has more to offer then purely Legs with big Syringes and swirly pieces of prop...
i think there will be interactive elements, and also the theme is not purely visual i think the them will interact right from various things in the ques and before you ride the ride, to the effort made into recruiting staff to play smiler Advocates
Yeah what i meant by Gimmick was if the ride basically was just as it appeared in the construction Videos before testing. For example if the Inoculator was just Large Syringes that basically are just stuck on the Legs of the Marmaliser And are just for decorative purposes, much like Alien Structure thats to do with Nemesis.
That with no other Theme or Build up would be a visual decorative Gimmick, and added to 14 World Record Looper.
I just thought Wardley would offer us more, and seems so.

All it indicates is that there are effects on the Marmaliser which we all know about. And why wouldn't Wardley want to bow out with a massively record breaking and innovative ride? It breaks at least 3 records, the inversions which it has beaten by 4 (hell of a lot really), most amount of track for the ride area and most elements per track meter. It doesn't have 'gimmick' theming either - it is one of the best and most extensively themed rides in the world. It's called a theme park for a reason.

So yeah i think the Ride will have more than meets the Eyes and be the Worlds First Propper 4D Roller Coaster with a Record Breaking 14 Inversions.
Looks very promising and even if there ends up being no 4D Elements well the 14 Inversions in a Tight Track will still make one Awesome Roller Coaster.

What? It is one of the best and most extensively themed rides in the world? You're talking out of your arse. It has minimal themeing in the guise of a few swirling props and logos. Visit Phantasialand in Germany, Toverland in Holland and any Disney park...then you will see true themeing!! The ride looks good and will hopefully be thrilling...but the theme is shit!!
Ik this is 4 years ago but the theming is really good.
Sean Hughes The theme is a secret agency brain washing the public,mother spider in the middle is the marmaliser. It is full of laughter and has a unique soundtrack to make the riders feel like they are being brainwashed by the smiling faces and 'laughing gas' so research the ride before you insult it

Bruh, it is good though. There are WAY worse themed themeparks. Alton Towers actually has one of the best themed rides around. Fantasia land is greatly themed, but it doesnt mean that this themeing is trash
