Mechanic Takes Customer's Car on 113-MPH Joyride

- Mason Berger tells Inside Edition's Jim Moret he dropped his BMW convertible at a Washington repair shop. After he picked up his car, Berger checked his car camera after noticing a problem with the stereo. The video shows the mechanic leaving the shop with Berger’s car, hitting speeds of 113 miles per hour. The repair shop owner later put the mechanic on two months' leave without pay. Now, Berger wants a refund but the shop owner says the repairs were completed and done well.
This is unbelievable. He needs to be charged and the shop held liable for damaging the stereo.
I mean, they suspended him without pay, and it's not clear whether the stereo was actually damaged by the mechanic blasting the music, if it was from another incident in the shop or else. The car owner can probably sue the mechanic himself for some money over reckless driving and endangerment and criminal mischief (blasting stereo, potentially damaging it and misusing the car as a whole, separately from reckless driving). Maybeeee some money for emotional distress (I am not american but considering what I always hear about I'd assume he could get away with suing for emotional distress as well). The shop doesn't have to refund him if the things didn't happen on their premises and the drive was not necessary to the repair, and the highway is not on their premises. But he could possibly get a bit more than he paid for the repair from the insurance of the mechanic.
Damage the stereo? When did it even say that?
The whole comment about it being so loud “the whole car shakes” is a joke too. The cameras optics were shaking.. this can happen if you hold a camera phone near a loud speaker.

The shop owner can’t arrest him…
They probably knew and this is not the first time. This is probably the first time they got caught.
He’s likely a good mechanic.. finding skilled people is difficult.
…. finding good employees is even harder… as we can see here.
When you bring your car to a dealership or mechanic, check the mileage BEFORE and AFTER.
Don’t just check the mileage, take a picture so you have proof.
And take a pic of the outside of car before and after you take it to the shop.
Proper repair shops do that for you, and write it down on a form for you to sign. They do it for several reasons, and in both parties' benefit.
A dash cam that's always on helps too. And tell the mechanic to not touch the dash cam.
The ones i go to check before accepting the car. They also write it down on the receipt of the before and after
The mechanic violated this man, and even worse, he risked countless lives by reckless driving and running red lights. How did he only get suspended for only 2 months, for literally GTA, reckless driving, and countless other crimes. Not to mention 90 mins of burning that man's fuel. Also, that's quite a loooooong "lunch break".
Because the shop owner is also a huge pos. He wouldn't even cover the repairs. I would sue.
Also the huge amount of wear and tear from essentially track driving/red lining the car for and hour and a half.
@@Jaime190agreed id also put up bad reviews for this shop
Because the shop owner isn’t going to ruin his employees life for some victimless crime. He was stupid, and was punished accordingly. Suspended 2 months without pay is punishment enough in an expensive city like Seattle.
It's probably the shop owner's kid!!
Shop owner wouldn't even give him his money back for the repairs? 😂 Come on man. Then just take them to court for damages.
What damages was created? Wh would I give you a refund bc you didn't like how it was driven after? Def a reach lol
@@yungnflashytv Did you not hear about the damage to the stereo?
I wouldn't say full on refund as much as I find mechanics to often be an enemy. Definitely take at least a few hundred off the bill for wear and tear.

Struggle of owning your own business and having to trust your employees to not ruin everything for you. If I was the boss I’d never let that guy back into my shop again, once the trust is broken like that it can never be restored. I’m glad no one was hurt because of his stupidity.

the owner obviously doesn't really care. If he did the guy would be fired and the customer would get a refund. Can say he cares all he wants but his actions don't show that.
Why give a refund if the repairs were done correctly? Granted the radio speakers or whatever is a seperate issue.
@@don2deliverAgree definitely no refund the shop has to pay the tech, service advisor, parts, disposal and any other shop supplies. That's not counting the building and business setup. The shop should fire that guy and repair any damage.. maybe offer service and a discount rate if he still trusted that shop but no refund been in this for awhile never seen a refund for a completed service.
@@zackm6850doesn’t matter if he’s never done a refund in the past, he should give him one after that
It’s better to report to cops , even nothing happens , cause it’s always better and definitely the car owner needs a refund .
he ran two red lights, traffic cameras gonna give him two tickets in the mail...
He should sue the guy and the shop period
hey, sometimes we need to tweak our logic. of course, would be wise to give some compensation, but a car is built to be driven, the fact that as owner you don't want other person driving it, doesn't mean is wrong to drive it. they gave him a service, that's what he paid for. If something was damanged during the driving, a compensation can me requested, but maintenence was given to the engine, why would be refunded?. A compensation could be even bigger to what he paid for, if damage is bigger in price
@@TheHydroCreations It's wrong to abuse someone's car, and drive it dangerously, and unlawfully. That becomes a killing weapon. And besides, if you rent a sports car and try to drive it at 113mph on the public road, or bring it to a race track, you will be in for a shock when you see the bill.
That’s crazy man! He needs to be straight up fired. Who does that to someone’s car.

I’ve been a mechanic in the same area as that shop for over 30 years so when I say there is no way the shop owner didn’t know something was going on I know what I’m talking about. Seriously who takes a perfectly good car on an hour long “ test drive “ ??
It almost feels like that bald guy is not really a mechanic.
It's a good thing that mechanic didn't get into an accident while driving that guy's car, but it's quite a shame he'd even risk doing something like that.
00:50 The guy was gone for an hour and a half. Either he was off work and took the car for a joyride which means the cops can arrest him for theft or they have really long lunch breaks…
No refund? That’s when you know this behavior is tolerated in this business. You hired that man and instead of firing him you suspend him only and on top of that you excuse yourself by saying that the repairs were done well? Seriously, have some common sense, most importantly, have customer service, and give the client, who trusted you and your shop, a reason to continue trusting you. By getting rid of the employee that put your entire business in jeopardy and by showing some respect and covering the cost of his repairs no matter what. That is what being a professional means. SMH
If you have a nice car, when you take your car to any shop, write "Current mileage:100,000" or whatever your mileage is. Then take a picture of your mileage for further proof. Then place it on the dash. Guaranteed that they will think twice especially since you know the mileage. If they need to test drive, you CAN request to be in the car. I have always been in my Maserati Gran Turismo coupe during ALL test drives. Non negotiable.
That’s smart.
@@firstnamelastname7708 Amen.
Smart but how often do maserati's have problems you already know the drill lol. Nice car though.
this is very upsetting. It's like when you get your phone fixed and they go through your stuff without you knowing.
I had a guy bring in his car and complained about some that went on above 110 mph. I pointed out that I could only check thing up to 70 unless he wanted to rent a track.
Refund him. Apologize. And fire that dude. These shady ass shops have zero intergrity. Just out of spite I'd take them to court and ask for twice the repair costs.
I know a mechanic did the same thing to my car because before I send my car in I take note of the mileage, when I got my car back I noticed 30 miles were added to the sped o meter which meant they didn’t just take it around to test drive and make sure it was okay.
No refund!? I'd be like "Okay, I'll drop this off to the police."
What a joke of a punishment. I'm not a BMW person, but if that was my car, I would have been in that shop raising holy hell. Cops definitely would have been involved one way or the other. I worked in a shop. I treated customers' cars better than if they were my own, and I treat my vehicles very well.
Unfortunately people with your mindset seem to be getting rarer and rarer.
Only 2 months? He should have gotten fired and the owner should have gotten the service for free.
He's basically fired. 2 months is too long to wait out for the average american without a paycheck. All the owner has to say if they guy does want that job back, is say "we've eliminated your position", or "we've decided to go a different direction".
Good thing there weren't any Red Light cameras! That would have made this a lot more stressful. Imagine if there was no dashcam, the mechanic could easily deny it.
That shop owner is no different than his employee ! Yeah, job completed and done well.
How about just fire the guy?
Two months for jeopardizing both the business and innocent people lives!?!? This business needs to be review bombed. This owner needs to be held accountable and refund the service.
Why was he put on leave and not fired?
Because it’s incredibly difficult finding and retaining mechanics lately. If he fired him, there’s no telling on when they’d have a replacement which could strongly negatively impact their business.

Says the brony, what is this 2013?
He should file a civil suit for the damages and the public records of this shop and they don't vet out employees before they commit felonies and the mechanic should have criminal charges endangering the lives of people on the road, and the owner of the company can file a similar suit against his employee for the damages done to his company from his actions.
I left my motorhome at a shop in Tucson, AZ for a few weeks to get some upholstery work done. After getting it back, I noticed that it had more mileage on it than when I dropped it off and there were other signs that made me believe that somebody at that shop camped in my RV while it was in the shop's possession. It's too bad that I didn't record it because if I had, I would have blasted them on Inside Edition also!!!

I hope this footage evidence of speeding is shared with the local police and I hope he finds a lawyer to go after this shady car repair facility and hold them accountable for the actions of the people they choose to hire to represent them.
1:24 bro the Durango was flipping him off
Just tell the shop you want $1000 for wear&tear, compensation for the inherent risk incurred from negligent reckless driving joy rides in your car (make sure to include your insurance deductible amount), breech of service contract in that a test drive does not include taking the car for a joy ride, and take them to small claims court.
Shop owner should be sued. That's a big violation! What about two red lights that he drove past! Who going to pay the tickets!
nobody because he didn’t get pulled over lol, on the super off chance that the 2 intersections had actual 24/7 surveillance cameras installed, then they’d get sent to the owners address in which he could take the shop to court and present the videos
Why would they not fire someone who's an active criminal on company property? How is he not charged with anything?
the shop owner really isnt going to refund? id sue and find EVERYTHING wrong with the stereo for them to pay for
I never drop my car anywhere.. I stay right there till it's fixed and a 5min ride around the block is all it needs or somebody's paying or lose your business license..!!!!
This happened to me but I didn't have a dash cam and they hadn't done the repairs yet so he destroyed my already overheating engine and then offered to replace it for me for a few grand 🤦♀️ I HATE MECHANICS

A friend of mine took his BMW to the dealer because it was shimmying at highway speed. A couple of days later, he went to pick up they car up and dealer's service advisor said they made no repair as they were not able to replicate the problem.
