  • In this video we go " back in time " to the 1970's and wild camp using my camping gear of that era.
For your entertainment and fun there will be a series of old photographs from the 1970's through to present day of the different tents I have owned and varied camping styles.

Great video Pat, that brought back a lot of memories.
I'm about 10 years older than you, so I started camping in the early 60s, also starting with the Scouts. It's interesting to see how much further advanced your early gear was than mine - a waxed canvas single skin tent from Millets with wooden poles, a separate groundsheet - no matress - and a sleping bag made by my Mum from an old army blanket. I did have an early Camping Gaz stove but usually opted for an open fire whenever I could. The rucksack, again from Millets, was canvas with a steel frams and leather straps. Great times.
Like you, I've had many changes of gear since then, but I still love the Trangia nad use it sometimes. I had a Quasar too.
Thanks for sharing your memories Pat. I look forward to seeing many more of your adventures. Just don't get arrested!

I think end of the sixties all new gear appeared, new materials and the start of lightweight kit appearing.

Then big family frame tents, basically scaffolding with a tarp thrown over lol. Then caravans and back to tents. I can't walk as I used to, so no hiking for me any more. I motorcycle camp now, use an Eurohike backpacker 2 DLX, the double of you 40 year old tent. Doubt it will last as long as yours though.

I remember at my first campings in end 70`s. (Germany)
I bought my first motorcycle for public roads, so I drove bigger tours and need cheap overnights.
So I´ve done wildcamping, campgrounds, or camping by motorcycle driver meetings
My camping gear was very cheap, because small money income. (like 400 pounds/month.)
My tent was small, but rain proof. My sleeping bag was good, only for spring and summer.
Cheap, but good gas stove. And a petroleum laterne for light in the tent.
The most bad, was bad raining clothes for motorcycle driving. But the good one was too expensive for me.
My tent was too small for me and all the gear. Better for backpackers.
Also my saddlebags on the motorcycle were too cheap made. But solid boxes were too expensive for me.
At this time no Gore-tex, no LED lights and torches, no Fleece Clothings, no Internet, no cell phones, etc.
And good sleeping bags were more expensive, as now.
But a good, warm sleeping bag is one of the most important items.
Now I´m age 58, and still camping and motorcycle driving. Also cheap, but better gear.
A pop up iglu tent - ready in five minutes. It works like an umbrella.
From a dealer for half price, because some little parts missing. No big deal.
A warm sleeping bag, down to zero grade celsius comfortable. (used, for like ten pounds)
some good gas stoves, for very cheap prices. And bought adapters, for using very cheap gas canisters.
An LED Camping laterne, charging via solar or A/C, with a torch and a fan included. Runs up to 5 hours and more.
I got also solid boxes and topcase very cheap, where I have dreamed of it.
And - so nice - I bought a small gas heater. For heating the tent, and to dry clothes.
And - most important - used motorcycle clothes, who are waterproof. So I must not put rain gear on, when it starts raining.
You can get it cheaper, because via Internet.
But I use also a petroleum laterne. It looks so romantic, and remember me about old times.

Pat you are a star. Trousers relatively new at twenty years old. Just like myself. lol. I was devestated last year when my Highlander 60 70 ltr cant remember now started to come apart. The stitching was rotten in places. On closer inspection it was beyond repair. I bought it new in 1986 and had been on many an adventure over its 32 year life.
My first tent was a old silver blue campari in 78. It did ok for a few years and was used as a play tent till it was rotten.
I now have a Soulo and a Tarra. After almost 40 years i have got some good gear. Most of my old gear was given to friends kids who were starting out camping and i am proud in today's society They still have most of the stuff. Or upgraded and passed it on to another friend.
I am sure your tent was the same as one a friend had. It was a dark almost black. Im sure it was made by Blacks of Edinburgh. Absolutely fantastic as always. All the best till the next adventure.

Magic. Pure magic. Some of my favourite photos are of the boys and girl in the Vendee (Isle de Noirmoutier at least a couple of times) and south of France. We used our own tent on the way down and hired a big tent from Eurosites if we weren't using a rusty motorhome. The boys enjoyed our own tent and sleeping in fields best as it turned out. :) You prove that good gear, looked after, lasts. Thanks for sharing the nostalgia Pat.

HA HA, Patrick you have brought it all back to me.... I am two years older than your good self. I was in the Scouts and also have great memories.... I still have my original tent that my Mum and Dad brought me that I used in the Scouts. It is called a "sand Fly tent" use in the second world war and was purchased at our local army surplus store. The arm used it in the desert and was small enough to pitch under a tank!!. The first job was to apply a water proof solution... several coats if I remember to stop the rain coming in.. It is canvas weights and ton and the colour is brown so it would blend into the desert. It consist of two fix 3ft long wooden poles with just canvas loops for pegging out and a fly net at each end of the tent that you had to crawl under..... great day... great memories.. keep you Videos coming.. let the young ones have the computers... we know what the best life consists of mateRegardsIan

I'm about half-way through the video at this wrighting. It's amazing how camping gear hasn't changed all that much. Your tent set up is wonderful! You look wonderful with long hair! Your wife is a lovely lady. That camper tent is just WOW! The most recent tent I had purchased is a ten by twelve that was tall enough for me to be comfy standing up. We've had it since 1998. Since the hubby had gotten ill, we haven't used it as much as I would have liked. But, I digress. You are looking so well! And, this has been a wonderful journey with you. This brings back memories. We tend to think of all the improvements in technology over the years but In the early 70s I bought a pretty expensive ridge tent from Godley's in Manchester. I guess it was a one man tent but it slept two regularly and comfortably. It was made from material you would expect to see today, extremely thin but tough synthetic ripstop type fabric. The inner, also synthetic material had a built-in groundsheet that seemed to have some rubber like membrane to keep the damp out but it was still extremely thin. It had three very light aluminium poles (two for the front and one small one for the bottom end) and the whole thing packed up into a package that was so light and small, it permanently lived strapped to the base of my old Karrimor framed rucksack. I've owned some lightweight high tech tents over the years but that seemed years ahead of it's time. I wish I could remember who it was made by. Thanks for that blast from the past!

Hi there .. from a South African now living in Switzerland 😊.
Now that was a great Blast from the Past (born 1950) .. thank you👍.
I still have (and use) nearly all of my 70's Gear .. Backpacker Boulder and Canyon Backpacks (65 & 55 litre), Optimus 8R Hunter Petrol Stove, Army Dixies / Esbit Folding Stove / Knife-and-Fork-n-Spoon Set / Water Bottle and Mug (aka 'Fire Bucket') and Accompanying Webbing, Evernew Camping Bowl Set, 3-Pot Aluminium Billy Can Set, Benedorm '3 Season' and 'Light' Hollofill Sleeping Bags, a Salewa Down Bag (❤), 'Camp and Trail' Bag Cover, Swiss Army Knife and other odds and sods.
The kids have 'requisitioned' long back, the rest of my 70's Gear, including my very first (60's) Canvas A-Frame Tent (tough as nails .. and heavy 🙄) and the 'Cadac' All Seasons Dome Tent.
Once again, many thanks for bringing back the memories .. great ones 👍😊. All of the best regarding your Health going forward (I'm also a 'Survivor' .. although not on the intake side but down at the exhaust 😏 .. 10 years clear and counting 🙏😊).
