So here are the main steps you need to take to get rid of your accent...
1 Don’t think of it as “losing” an accent but learning another one. We assume you want to learn the accent of the country or community you are living in; not because you are ashamed of your background, but to make your communication with others easier. So you need to change your mindset. You are still who you are, and you should be proud of your background.
2 Learn the differences in words used for certain things. For example, if you are British, and you want to fit into North American life, you will need to learn the actual differences in words used, such as car hood for bonnet, sidewalk for pavement, flashlight for torch and so on. And also, you would need to learn the differences in pronunciations for certain words, such as detail and process and so on which are said differently.
3 Learn how the sounds and the way the mouth and tongue is used in the country to want to sound like a native in.
Well, if you have been brought up in a country that has a language different from English, quite often the way you use your mouth and the whole of your vocal apparatus will be different, and there are certain sounds that you will find very easy to do and some in English that you will find very difficult. Some languages use the back of the throat a lot, and some not, some use a flexible tongue, so you need to understand how to adapt the way you actually speak in some circumstances. It depends on where you have been brought up. There are a lot of good resources on the web to identify what these particular voice characteristics are for many countries’ native languages, on websites such as www.pronunciationstudio.com and so on.
4 Analyse the “melody” of the accent you want to emulate. English speakers often speak with a lot of light and shade, when it comes to timing the syllables and the words, the spaces between words quite often are dramatic, whereas in many Latin languages, every syllable seems to have the same time and emphasis. People also tend to speak faster in certain countries. The melody of speech is different in many cultures. So that’s why you need to analyse in great detail phrases from the country you want to sound at home in.
5 Next, even if you are not an actor, or don’t want to be, just pretend that you are, and it will help you enormously. Imagine that you have got a starring part in a movie pretending to be a native of that country! First of all, you need to identify what type of voice you have, and then find a recording, it may be on CZcams, or a news website, or whatever, and identify somebody who has a very similar type of voice to you. So, in other words, you need to find someone of the same sex, with similar age, similar depth of voice, and style of speaking, however this person needs to have an accent that you want to emulate.
Take one phrase or sentence at a time, and really analyse this section of speech. If you happen to have any audio processing software like us voice-overs have, look at the waveform, look at the peaks and troughs, and the timing of the words in the gaps between the words.
6 Long-term, you need to listen to podcasts on the go, and keep a radio on at home with the accent that you want to learn; in Great Britain, for example you would have BBC radio 4 on, or LBC, you need to totally immerse yourself in the language. And it’s amazing how quickly your brain will soak this up, and together with regular practice you will really crack this!
Follow the instructions and then take a few minutes to practice and you will soon get rid of your accent.

I picked up southern ascent and it won’t go away
You talk about identifying the type of voice one has, how do you do this? What are the voice types you are referring to?
Regards
Dear friend. That website seems to be down, just to let you know.
Finally some actually helpful video and not some "nooo don't lose your accent it's so unique ahah"
you're right That is an excuse to make people feel good .
I hate ppl who say don't lose ur accent
people say I'm white just because i sound like one, even tho I'm hispanic
I was in Henley and I thought I was speaking without an accent, but someone could tell where I was from. M.
Same. I have Indian accent and I hate it. I can’t speak proper English cuz of it.
When i talk i feel like i don't have an accent but when others hear me talk, it's very clear i have an accent.
same. when i listen back to my voice I cringe so hard.
@@just1it1moko Me too. Most people already hate the sound of their own voice. Add an accent to that and it's cringe all the way.
Bone vs air conduction - we hear ourselves at the bone conducted and air conducted level. While other people only hears it at the air level.
Here same also when I talk with others I feel I don't have any accent but when they hear me they feel I've accent in....
I know right 😂
If im not wrong you are looking at the comments to see you are not alone and to not feel bad.
I wish he was my teacher in real life. I LOVE his voice and the way he talks.
I just trust him more because of his British accent.
your voice is so strong and even calming. I will take the training as I am sick and tired of my accent.
I feel a bit proud of myself 'cause I can finally get every word from an english native speaker and now my next goal is to get a native accent for myself, this is so helpful for me right now. Thank you! 🥺
i have heard many people trying to speak like an American native speaker, still, there is always a hint of an accent which can tell me where that person comes from. Accent shouldn't be stigmatized, it is a badge of honor to have an accent. Of course, if you teach any language or subject, ensure your accent is not too thick and your learner can understand you. Even if we all try to speak like a pro in another language, we always carry that accent where we come from. Nothing wrong with that.
Yeah, that would be great. But in reality, I guess all of us are just trying our best to make sure others can understand us like we want them to. Sometimes it takes me a bit longer than I wanted to finish a sentence, and not because I can't say the words, but because the rhythm is just... not it. So, moving forward, I want to have at least a better flow I guess, more natural, not native, because that would never be the case, but at least natural to the ear.
But there’s also nothing wrong with trying to loose one.
Thank you for this information! I just bought your course. Can't wait to start working on it.
Thank you, great video by the way, really accurate, i hope your channel grows
If I show this to my fellow people, they will say that this guy got an accent 100%
I can’t agree more 😅
He does have an accent. And it's not de TAIL in American English, that's British. It's DE tail. Even he can get them wrong. 😊
Mr. Baker, not only is your voice beautiful, your personality is exceptional.
great tips, thanks for the video
I work in customer service taking calls 8 hours a day. It's very upsetting when a customer as soon as I greet them say: Transfer me to an agent in the United States. Or, as soon as I greet them, they ask: Where are you from? Ufff....I have to deal with this all day longggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's sooooo annoying. Seriously. People are just nasty and prejudiced. They completely dislike you and feel you will not be able to assist them as an American would. It makes my job sooo difficult. I NEED desperately to get rid of my accent. I came to the United States when I was 20 years old from South America. I speak Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, English and I am studying German. It's funny you mention German on this video. There are many new sounds I am learning, but I must say it's the hardest language I ever studied so far. The first time I encounter an r, I almost died! Try saying bruder (brother in German, or bread) I'm having a blast though. I love languages. I want to learn Latin and Mandarin as well. I wonder if the German people would also look down on me if I don't speak German with perfect pronunciation, as a native.
Sorry to hear that. There was an exchange between a student and a teacher I heard about which was great. The student apologised for his bad german I think it was. The teacher replied with "You speak my language but I don't speak yours so you are already ahead of me." wish more people had that mindset.
Also yeah the german "R" sound is a bit weird. It's not this very strong rolling sound (anymore) like in Russian but also not this smoorh(?) english "R". It's pretty scratchy I think.
Best of luck. Customer service is a rough job.
Fantastic. Great advice. Thank you very much!
I lived in Southern California my whole life and somehow I acquired a British accent. I want to get rid of this accent. I don’t know what to replace it with.
Thank you! Great video.
Anchor phrase. So that's what it's called.
When I need to configure my mouth and throat for "projection" or "speaking into the mask" (singer's term), I use "Oh really, how utterly fascinating" in a tone of whithering contempt. For some reason, that lowers the epiglotis and the adam's apple.
Very helpful. Your previous class was amazingly useful as well. I appreciate your efforts. Many thanks
We really appreciate your feedback. Good luck with the voice training. Best wishes Peter Baker www.VoiceoverMasterclass.com
This is brilliant! Loving the whole idea on authenticity and the use of anchoring.
This is giving me much to think about and the world of hope ❤🙏
Thank you and you're welcome

As a child my mother mad fun of me for sounding like Forrest Gump. I taught myself to use the accents I heard from cartoons and was constantly asked where I was from in my hometown. Now as a 27 year old I'm wondering how the hell I changed it so effortlessly
I have a New York accent and I’m here. Sometimes it makes me feel uneducated 😔
Very informative , finally cleared my doubt
I grew up in the US since 2 yrs old. I don't feel I should have an accent and in my head I don't hear the accent but if I hear my self in a recording I sound like I have a big old accent and I don't like it. Also I think what adds to it is I have a high pitch voice. So now I've noticed it's the way I pronounce certain words. Also probably because some of my older siblings have an accent so probably rubbed off on me without me even knowing
I have more of a deep voice but in recordings i have a very strong Hispanic accent
Omg same i was born here and people say I have an accent i can’t hear it. But in audios my voice sounds funny .

I’m british (english) but live in ireland.
I’m fed up of being called names everytime I walk by a classroom, i’ve had to move schools to stop the bullying but nothing has changed. I’ve changed the way i pronounce certain words (the, three, tree etc.) but it doesn’t last long. I’ve lived in Ireland since I was 12 but I still have the stupid Chelt accent. I'm a Brazilian i can speak English normally and my accent is not that t h i c c but i wish it was more subtle, definitely gets worse as get more emotional
I have been working on my accent for several weeks but still i cant not get the accent that i want. I could imitate only while i was listening to the audio. But when i applied to my daily basis i unconsiously comeback to my origin accent. Anyone here please help

Im here cuz i get bullied for it lol
You shouldn't be bullied for the way you sound. Those people should first check their manners b4 checking how u sound. Don't mind them ❤
Your American accent example at 5:54 "Sure" makes the common mistake many Non-American accent speakers make - and that is over stressing and dragging the "R". A neutral American accent (Not a Southern or New York one) has a quick and soft "R".
So, its not "Surrre".
i thought it sounded great
and here I am listening voice actor on mute by using subtitles (I am in a public space forgot to bring earphones)
Lol 😂 😂😂😂
I’m here because I was curious what people accents go thru
The problem is, that I learned English with friends from the hood and now I mess up when I try to speak "standard" English y'all, this shit is a nightmare, I'm soon gonna be an English teacher in my country and I still have that accent smh

I'm tired of my Mexican accent
You should never be ashamed or tired of the accent you have from your upbringing, unless it really was traumatic and you'd rather forget it. No matter how skilled actors are, nobody can replace a native speaking person for a part that needs it. Right now there could well be many people looking for a native Mexican accent, not someone "acting" it. The key is finding those people.
Dont worry about it I bet a lot of people are insecure of their birth land. Just remember that motherland is just an idea born on a fragile system the only thing that matters is what you find joy in and the people and things you love, nevermind what people might think about your physical appearance just try to be a really likeable person, or not up to you. My point being cheese is way too overpriced.
