  • This should have been a huge hit everywhere in the world - it is one of the classic pop/rock songs. It sounds better 35 years on and despite many cover versions and samplings, this original will never be outdone.
    A #55 in Australia, a #24 in Britain and a complete zilch in America, the iconic Elvis Costello has continued to tour, record, diversify, act, produce, - what hasn't he done?
    ENJOY!

    Elvis Costello* penned “Pump It Up” (1978) while sitting on the fire escape at a Newcastle Hotel during the 1977 Live Stiffs Tour (also called 5 Live Stiffs).
    It might be one of Costello’s most defining pieces as well as his most rock ‘n’ roll song. Simple and straightforward❕ A prime example of the English musician’s witty wordplay, “Pump It Up” is sheer frustration, the lyrics being a pun for the speaker’s desperate pleas for both sexual release and the raising of the booming music he’s overwhelmed himself in.
    Worth mentioning : Madonna learned to drum by playing along to this very tune.
    Hats 🎩 off to you, Declan Patrick MacManus, a.k.a. Elvis Costello‼️ 💙🎼💛
    * The singer-songwriter took his pseudonym from ELVIS Presley and his father’s stage name, Day COSTELLO.

    • @ricklanders
      @ricklanders Před 2 měsíci

      It's actually less straightforward than that. Costello is lampooning and satirizing the excesses of the sex & drugs rock and roll era, which he saw continuing into what was supposed to be the "new wave." He's not making a "plea" for anything, he's making fun of that whole attitude.

    The vibe from this song is great. A classic. And I only listen to old school death and thrash metal
