Old-Growth Sitka Spruce-Bigleaf Maples: A Rare and Spectacular Plant Community

The ecological community of old-growth Sitka spruce combined with ancient bigleaf maples is one of the very rarest ecosystems in Canada, found only in a small handful of locations on Vancouver Island that I know of (in the US, primarily in the western valleys of Olympic National Park) - and to me is just about the most beautiful ecosystem on Earth.

If I was asked to find a new species, the first place I would look is in the canopy soil of an old growth big leaf maple.
