  • In today’s video, I’m excited to share nine native trees of the Pacific Northwest. Here I’m referring more narrowly to the lowland areas west of the Cascades.
It’s a place of deep, mossy forests and oak savannas, weird & wonderful trees, and giant, old-growth trees.

Number 3, American hazelnut, is native to those States east of the Mississippi River. Check any book on trees native to the Pacific Northwest and you won't find hazelnut as a native tree.

Thanks for your note! My understanding is that the hazelnut found commonly in the PNW forests is native (the California hazelnut/western beaked hazelnut), but the one that’s typically cultivated here agriculturally is not. I see hazelnut listed as native in these sources, for example: pnwplants.wsu.edu/PlantDisplay.aspx?PlantID=487, nativeplantspnw.com/beaked-hazelnut-corylus-cornuta/
