    TEMP FIX THAT WORKED FOR ME:
    Unlock the steering column and raise, lower, pull, push the column hard. Did this two times and it worked.
    This is a temp fix. I'm not sure how long it will last. It got me home.

    Thank you so much for this very thorough and informative video. I have a 2011 CC and my vehicle over this past hot summer here in Florida has not started if parked out in the sun for too long. I had a bad cell in my AGM battery and replaced it a couple days ago and thought that was the culprit but yesterday the issue of no start and immobilizer error appeared back on the dash. I was able to start the car after the temp came down inside the car but its getting worse so time to dig in and repair. I have purchased a new steering column lock and because of your video I am going to remove my column and desolder the 2 new mico switches from the new circuit board and resolder them onto my old board as well as use the entire mechanics of the new module as to retain the immobilizer settings so I do not have to visit the dealer to reprogram the key. Again thank you for the awesome video.

    IMPORTANT. Super video. I did all this but found nothing wrong with the switch. While putting it back I sprayed the proper contact cleaner unto the push-together connector at the base of the column. And also VERY IMPORTANT, I cleared the alarms that had developed because of this failing to start (due to immobilizer). Result perfect for the past 5 weeks. I waited before posting. So try just the contact cleaner on the opened connector at the immobilizer switch first, AND CLEAR THE ALARM. The fault will come back if the alarm is not cleared. Hope this might help some. Great video, gave me the confidence to do it. Best wishes to CZcams also, magic.

      Hi David, to my memory(4 years now), the connector should be near the bottom of bar going to the steering wheel. So it is low down near the foot pedals. Make sure you use Electrical Contact Clearer as this evaporates quickly. Do not use any other.
      Also my alarm did come back!
      It happens very little.
      I remove the keys, and wait for all the light to go off (2 to 3 minutes), then try to start again as normal. Usually works.

    i have soldered those pins on the board to make sure it makes good contact, for the past 2 weeks the B6 of the costumer car did again not start this 1 time unless u shake the steering a bit, but that is because if you are adjusting the steering wheel back and forth and a chance is going to happen that the pins are not making good contact so the car won't start. well it's ok tho. better then nothing i guess, someday i take the parts out again and do a proper soldering and some tweak so the pins are making good contact with the connector. thanks for the upload! u helped big time here.

    Hi, I love your video, I have had the steering column lock fault on my 61 plate Passat CC. I had the relays changed at my local garage after I bought the kit off of Ebay. for the past three weeks it has been fine. There was a a slight delay in the ignition kicking in when the car was cold, but atleast the error had gone. However, last night, I got the error again which has totally gutted me, although the relays and switches have been changed. Anyway advice would be fab. thanks very much

    Here's how I have a problem with the 2007 Passat b6, so the tires on the car were replaced with nozzles, and then he somehow turned on the radio for 5 minutes, and then we washed his engine, because then the car won't start, the diagnostics show a crankshaft sensor error, but that put new and nothing, I really do not know what can happen if someone knows let him help,
    Could it be that the steering wheel is locked and why would that happen if you can help me

    Hello, thx for the video, well explained. I think I have the same problem, only it's not that worse. Sometimes my engine cranks for some seconds but it eventually starts, sometimes it starts right away with no problem, sometimes it starts and I get yellow spring with engine problem, visit workshop or steering column lock defective and it turns off immediately, but 2nd time it starts. Lately it starts but shuts down right after, but if I clear the codes with an obd reader it starts and run with no problem. The faults I'm getting are electronic steering column lock control module j764, electronic steering column lock check sum error and steering column lock enabling for electronic ignition lock. Could it be some bad wiring since sometimes it runs with no problem and sometimes it gives this errors but still runs?

    This is how I did mine, around 4 years ago. I didn't remove the switches, I eased off the green boot and sprayed contact cleaner in there. A multimeter is essential for testing for implausible readings. It should either be zero Ohms or Infinity. the failure is having a high resistance in the position the switch sits at when operated, not the zero Ohms it should be. It's just gummed up contacts, as per the video. Clean them until it's completely binary. Infinity or zero - nothing else.

    Great video! It helped with one Passat for a while after I changed both microswitchs but still I have the problem when outdoor temperature drops around 0'C.
    It can be hear that lock&motor are slow when it's cold. Then I got situation when it unlock-lock-unlock. If I tried to take out the key fob and put it back to key hole, lock&motor can be hear to move faster.
    Questions, can the lock be dirty which lead to this slowness or could it be slow because of cold lubrication in sleeves in lock..?
    In the other hand, I have a old battery in car, but it's strange that lock&motor works faster in second attemp.

      Hi
      Definitely dirt can obviously slow down the moving parts...
      Then motor can also be the culprit... open the lock clean and lubricate it...
      Changing the motor would be also something to consider...
      Hope that helps...

    • @olegk455
      @olegk455 Před 5 lety +1

      kupukka I have exact same problem as you described. System will function just fine all spring and summer but comes fall or worse yet winter and it starts to fuck up. It’s been doing that for two years now and I know for a fact that cold temps are causing that. First I thought that perhaps bad soldering is the issue but now after reading all that I started to doubt myself. Probably just bad micro switch just as the video describes. I am going to have to just dive in and try to fix it myself as the replacement will cost me close to 1000$ here in Canada. Have you figured out the exact cause of your issue by chance?

    • @nospam4279
      @nospam4279 Před 2 lety +1

      Can confirm. Nordic country. Car works fine all (short) Spring and Summer, no issues. Temperatures start dropping and the warnings come in. For me, it is solved by taking out the key fob, turning the steering wheel as far left as I can, then put the key fob back in. Unlocks every time, no warning. Been doing that for a few years now but I'm worried that one day it will just lock up. I haven't performed any fix as it does mean messing with a tamper proof part and I don't want to find myself in a situation where I need to pay a large amount for reprogramming the car for new parts. I don't like that practice at all. A car should be serviceable. Good to know these micro switches can be easily fixed or swapped out without the need for reprogramming, should it come that far.

    I don't have any alarms on dash board. When I plug the key in to first position I can see amber LED small steering wheel light coming on and can hear the steering lock unlocking. When I proceed further with the key to ignition start the small steering wheel LED turns red and there is no start not even trying to crank. Have you come across this issue before? Hi
      A new column would most likely need to be programmed... (I never done that...)
      At second hand column, probably would need to be virginized first... and then programmed...
      I am saying this with no previous research... so it might be that is not exactly like this...

    • @ShemekBest
      @ShemekBest Před 7 lety

      there is no chance to virginized an used one...no solution available for public... yet
      only brand new possible ,very simple...all you need is a PIn code, VCDS or similar device and good battery back up/support.

    • @LMAutoRepairs
      @LMAutoRepairs  Před 7 lety

    • @ShemekBest
      @ShemekBest Před 7 lety

      transfer the data only via swapping both ELMOS(you can NOT read those) mcus from ori into new(for me with brand new in hand,does not make any sense as programming wont take longer then 5mins,once you got a pin code ) and brand new cost only £80 at dealer...only does make sense when, new not available or you have a spur one at your workshop... hope that does make sense

    Question here.. Passat, same problem, locking and unlocking not working. I got everything out and I tried to measure microswitches. One is reading kiloohms while not pressed, press it and it shows 0.00 Ohm. The bottom one shows infinite ohms resistance just like yours when you have it out of the board. But mine is still there.. after click it shows 0.00 Ohm. Different fault than you have, but I think the board is not able to detect this microswitch if it has infinte resistance "OL" right? Or any other ideas what could be wrong?

    Hello! I have a 2011 B7 Passat that sometimes throws the "Steering Lock Defective" message I suspect it's the same issue as the B6, it's intermittent, sometimes it works fine, sometimes the ignition lights take a while to light up as the steering lock does 2 or 3 tries until they light up, sometimes the error shows up. For now I just remove the key and try again and it works fine but this situation is only going to get worse over time.
    Is the removal of the steering column easy? I can't for the life of me find a video or photos as to the actual removal of the column. I don't really want to mess with it without making some research first. Would hate to pay a fortune at the VW dealer for a steering lock replacement just because of two stupid oxidized microswitches...

      I have a message on dashboard saying that “steering column look” visit workshop.. the car switches on and is working normally, but from time to time won’t unlock the steering.
      Where can I get the car to you for fixing?
      Can I have a phone number or something for an appointment?
      Thanks

      Hi
      I do this repairs on a part time basis... and I have enough to do at the moment...
      I would however, advise you to get it sorted rather soon than later... because that will fail, and you will be left stranded....
      Hope that helps...

    now everyone can see how stupid our , ,clever" engineers are with their shitty electronic stuff in cars :) ...same shit like lectronic power steering...if its not working its more hard turn steering wheel than in old cars which dont have powersteering at all :D ....
