I own a 73 les paul a 68 strat a 70s martin, and a 50s tele. I love my 5420t for the sound and it does something the others don't on the playability side of things. Without a nice gretsch of some sort you don't have it all. I took it to a luthier and had it set up with double sided sticky tape for the bridge and chose 11's. No tuning issues and I use the trem a lot. For under a grand if you want to impress the chicks get one in orange.
7 years later, gotta wonder if you ever got one. Got mine yesterday and swapping the blacktop for TVJones T-Armonds, but stock there's absolutely nothing wrong with em even now that they're mic or indo. Funny thing is, that kept the price point the same 7 years later and with inflation. Fit & finish spot-on, nicely resonant unplugged, and a dream neck profile though that's obviously subjective.
Whats bad about Andy is he plays so good and beautifully he makes the guitar sound better than it really is no matter what it is. No way in hell I could make ANY guitar sound as good as it does in Andy's hands
yeah, it's really hard to judge the quality of the equipment. i swear Andy could be like "this is the Colgate ProX Toothbrush. It sings through clean tones and gives a nice punchy, crunch when called on. I'll be running it through a 1994 leather sandal with the tone rolled off." and then he plays helter skelter like nobody ever has.
I own this guitar and it really is pretty awesome. Of course if you can't play for crap, it doesn't matter if you pay $3000 for the American version, you are still going to sound like crap.
Working Man Games, I bet you would surprise yourself how well you could get if ya found a good guitar instructor to work with ya on playing better. Practice, practice, practice is something I'm guilty of not doing. When I do put in the time practicing my playing gets better to the point I've surprised myself with the sounds I can get out of my guitar.
When I was looking to spend some money on guitars two years ago, the G5420T was on my short list. This video made sure I didn't look at any other hollow body guitars. By the time the money came my way, they'd released the newer version with the slimmer headstock and thumbnail fret markers, which I like even more. I absolutely love my Gretsch.
@@andyledger2307yep, just got mine 5 years after you and love it. Would love it more in Aspen green - discontinued, so I got the trad orange. Have 4 Gretsches - think it's a rule that one of them be orange 😀 Damn fine guitars!
absolutely. i bought it just a few weeks ago, im solely a jazz artist and it sounds amazing. put it with the right amp (ive got usually a line 6) and its the warmest thing ever on the neck pickups. beautiful guitar it is. i love it
Absolutely. I've played both. The pickups in the 5420 stand head and shoulders above the 5120. The 5420 felt a lot sturdier in my hands too. Cosmetically, i think we can all agree the 5420 prevails. Keep in mind though that i'm comparing these guitars in their stock forms; and throwing a set of TV Jones' in either of these puppies will greatly improve their sound. Brian Setzer would agree.
+ Jayke Watson there's a common misconception about big hollowbodies. They can't handle high stagevolumes (without squeeling), however gain isn't a limitation when it comes to body construction. I think it comes from the fact that in the olden days a lot of gain meant you had to crank your amp to rediculously high stagevolumes.
I've had mine for a week now and its exactly what I was searching for. Dynamic but friendly. I ordered from PGS and no issues ,real purdy in orange. Such a deal, feel the material.
The pickguard is covering the bottom part of the pickup surround. These surrounds are wider than other Gretsch pickup surrounds because the pickup body is not as wide. These pickups do sound great!
I love how all of the comments say that the Gretch is only for clean or ask if it can handle overdrive. The first two minutes and last two minutes both use overdrive, yes, a modest amount, not like metal, but open your ears folks, you'll hear overdrive in this video. It sounds great. It can be prone to feedback at very high volumes or high levels of overdrive or distortion. It's the nature of the beast. You either like the sound enough learn to manage it or buy a different guitar, like a solid body or a semi-hollow with a center block.
Wow! I just love hearing these guitars played so MASTERFULLY!!!!!! lol Definitely helps me narrow my favorites down by being able to hear them being played. Thanks Andy!!
Daryl, I have this guitar too. It's fantastic, no need to pin the bridge. Sand the bridge base to match the profile of the guitar top and that should keep it in place. If not just use thin double sided tape. It won't move unless you're seriously abusing it
Andy showcases some of the best things. I think if he showcased some rubber bands attatched to a roach motel and yardstick he'd make it make that sound cooler than beans and awesome to boot!
Hey jtricer1973, you're gonna love it. It's going to be my next guitar. I picked it up in a local store the other week out of curiosity and ended up playing it for well over an hour. It was only the shop shutting that made me put it down :) An exquisite guitar.
I went to guitar center to get one of these and they were sold out, but this old guy was sitting there playing an Epiphone Sheraton II and it sounded beautiful he wasn't buying it so i scooped it up and its okay. I really wanted G5432OT.
I just played one of these and a 5120 that the store was clearing out. While the pickups on the 5420 are clearly better, the 5120 had a much more acoustically resonate and more lively response.
I really really wish Gretsch would have come out with these electromatics or at least announced they were going to before I bought mine a couple months back. They sound so so much better. Although I do love my orange 5122 and as far as I can see they arent making that in the new series.
TV Jones pickups are overhyped & overpriced. The reason being that he basically has the Filtertron market cornered to himself. There aren't many options if you want to buy this kind of pickup, and TV Jones are marketed as upgrades for regular Filtertrons when they are anything but. I was stupid for paying £120 each for the ones I bought but I'll be selling them on asap because I found some very good Filtertrons made by Roswell for around £35 each which is a great price and they're similar in spec to TV Jones Classics apart from the Roswells use alnico 2 magnets instead of alnico 5.
It doesn't sound like a BB so it has to be the Kalamzoo. Just have in mind that Andy has magic hands, and doesn't play with a pick, so his tone is always a litte warmer and sweeter than you would often get at home.
The new electromatics look awesome especially seeming they fit filtertrons properly now so you can upgrade the pickups to tv jones if wanted but in this video they sound great. Really GASing for a Pro Jet
Andy I love your demos. Especially your guitar playing. I have a Vox AC15 C1 and now this guitar. I blame you! This guitar (mine is cadillac green) is fantastic. Played through through my Vox it sounds sublime.
You definitely can. It has enough twang for funk and plenty of body to make your blues sound neat and warm. Plus, these filtertrons sound awesome overdriven for that SRV sound, though the guitar is more prone to feedback as it's a hollow body. For the stuff you described, I would recommend a higher range Fender Mexican Strat. But why not try a Gretsch somewhere and see!
Great video and thinking of picking up one of the 2018 135th anniversary models. Been wanting to add a Gretsch and something with a Bigsby so this looks like a great choice.
Wow, great playing! Just added this video to my YT playlist. Gotta find out how you play those different pieces on the Gretsch. Love the sound of the Gretsch!
Andy logra capturar la escencia de cualquier instrumento, hacer maginificas reseñas con muy buena interpretacion mostrando siempre la funcionalidad del instrumento y las capacidades segun el estilo de guitarra. Magifico.
There are several posts here about feedback when playing using a large hollow body guitar with an amp. I have had two such "Archtop" Hollow body guitars and my experience is yes you do get feedback if you allow the front of the guitar where the openings are to face the amp's speakers and combined with a lot of volume and gain. Just face away from the speakers and do not crank the amp up all the way and no feedback. That's my experience. Most people stand in front of their amps with the amp behind them and face away from the amp while performing hence no feedback. It may be possible if your guitar chord is around 20 feet to also crank your amp way up. I've done it and no feedback. Some of these Archtop Hollow body guitars have a wood block inside the hollow body under the bridge. This is a design specifically made to reduce feedback. I think this guitar has the wood block. So please do not fear the feed back and if you like the sound purchase one of these Archtop guitars. With the Archtop type of instrument, it's un-plugged guitar tone is that of an acoustic guitar and can be described as a woody or tone wood kind of tone, meaning it's the best tone from any guitar. BTW when amplified you can play Rock and really "Rock out" on one of these and also get a twangy tone think Rockabilly and if you want, as well as a mellow Blues and Jazz tone. My opinion, and I have built two violins from kit's and I play violin and acoustic Nylon stringed Classical Flamingo type guitar as well as over a dozen world acoustic stringed instruments such as Sitar, Sarangi, Veena, Sarod, Pipa, Erhu, Guquin, upright bass, viola, cello, bouzouki, Oud and Rebab or Rabab) is that these Archtop Hollow body electric guitars are without question the very best sounding guitars on the market for those types of music (Rock, Blues, Rockabilly and Jazz). I presently have a GUILD Newark Street A-150 Hollow Body Acoustic Archtop guitar with an old school pickup bolted to and hanging from the end of the neck/finger board. It never touches the top of the guitar but instead floats above the wooden top. It's an actual acoustic guitar that happens to have an electric p/u on board. I have the best of both worlds since my Guild sounds wonderful and can get loud when not plugged in to an amp. Or when I want I can plug it into an amp (tube amp preferred since feed back is worse using a solid state amp-go figure) and play as loud as I want t! I can rock the house! Or, I can take it along with me and sit in a park or a friends house and play without an amp and enjoy a better, real tone wood acoustic sound. I recommend the Guild Newark Street A-150 Archtop Hollow Body accustic/electric guitar (it comes with a quality hard case) as well as this Gretsch G5420T. Yes I am thinking about purchasing a G5420T, it's about 3 lbs heavier than my Guild but it has tone controls as my Guild requires that I use the tone knobs on my amp. Ha I have a new Fender EC Vibro Champ 5 watt/8" special Weber speaker with real tube Tremolo and tube rectifier (4 tubes total in a 5 watt amp) that alas does not have a tone knob. But the amp does reflects the sound truthfully of my Archtop. Rock on!
BTW since my Guild Newark Street A-150 is in reality a real acoustic guitar with a p/u that is the reason it lacks a tone knob. The fact that it weighs around 4 lbs also reflects that it is indeed an acoustic instrument. I do not see any other electric full sized guitars anywhere near as light weight as my Guild. Believe me I appreciate it's lack of weight to no end. It is very comfortable to hold and play!
This model does not have a center block. Gretch makes another comparable model with a center block. You can tell the difference in that this one has a rosewood bridge that is held to the top by string tension. The center block model has an all-metal bridge that is screwed into the center block. The non-center block has a more hollow-body sound, while the center block brings it more into the area of a hybrid between hollow and solid. The non-center block models are more prone to feedback, which could actually be fun if you learn how to control it.
i have one of the pro jet's the 5435 ones chambered i love mine and i can play things like this( well sorta of, this guy is pretty damned good!) but i can rock out on it, or i can go mellow and man the feel, and other guitarists know what i am talking about there, that feel is just amazing to me
A few days ago I call the shop and was hoping that Andy would get a clip of the Gretsch 5420T up soon. I can't believe it's on now. This guitar sounds fantastic. The Black Top" Filter'Trons sound incredible. I'll have one on order soon. This is the Gretsch twang that I am craving without spend 3 grand on a Nashville. Although the Nashville with TV Jones Classic is pretty much the king and I haven't ruled it out at all. Sweet job as usual Andy. Now which color to choose,
I hate to argue too much, but "total rubbish" is a harsh phrase... I have one with Jones and one stock because they fill different roles. I actually like the Gretschbuckers for some songs more... especially if I am trying to get a room filling overdrive sound. That said, the TV Jones are killer, and I might get one of these new 5420s to round out the herd - they seem to fall somewhere between the old Gretschbuckers and the TV Jones pups.
10-4 on the PJ GAS! Wouldn't you know, soon as I brag on Electromatics - I just had to exchange a 5420. Great sound and finish but the strings sat too far to one side of the fingerboard. Moving the bridge wouldn't work because apparently the Bigsby was misaligned. Such issues crop up occasionally with Asian guitars in this price range. We'll see about the replacement. Have put TV Jones Classics in an Ibanez AF75TDG with fantastic results - might demo it on YT.
Came for the guitar. Stayed for the playing. This guy always freaking kills it.
I've watched this more than ten times. One day, I'll own this instrument
I own this in Cherry Red! Amazing Instrument!
I bought this guitar based on this demo. No, really. Awesome.
The hollow-body design is what makes the sound so unique. I have the 2016 5420t in aspen green, and it‘s a stunner in every respect.
I'll be running it through a 1994 leather sandal with the tone rolled off."
and then he plays helter skelter like nobody ever has.
And I totally heard all of that in his voice...
I own this guitar and it really is pretty awesome. Of course if you can't play for crap, it doesn't matter if you pay $3000 for the American version, you are still going to sound like crap.

They're all like that unfortunately. Listen to that British guy testing the orange stain... Just wanna buy it no questions asked.

The one that came after this, which the slimmer headstock and thumbnail fret markers, in Aspen Green.
@@andyledger2307yep, just got mine 5 years after you and love it. Would love it more in Aspen green - discontinued, so I got the trad orange. Have 4 Gretsches - think it's a rule that one of them be orange 😀 Damn fine guitars!
jeez the Gretsch tone at 4:36 gets me every time I play one or hear someone playing one these guitars are amazing.
It's the full range. Its clear, high end-y but also super full
Vintage or new, I've never heard a bad sounding Gretsch in my life!
You cannot go wrong with a Gretsch, really lovely guitars.
absolutely. i bought it just a few weeks ago, im solely a jazz artist and it sounds amazing. put it with the right amp (ive got usually a line 6) and its the warmest thing ever on the neck pickups. beautiful guitar it is. i love it

Oh, And Kudos to Andy for playing one of my Favorite G-Love & Special Sauce songs. Always has such good taste.
Saw them in WashDC in 92. Then two months later they were on a Nike Commercial. Weird. Love that band.
I guess Andy also has chosen the right colours for his cloths to match with the beautiful miami aspen green of the Gretsch...
well done!
I've had mine for a week now and its exactly what I was searching for. Dynamic but friendly.
I ordered from PGS and no issues ,real purdy in orange. Such a deal, feel the material.
I decided today this is the next guitar I’m buying. I really love the tone. It’s so jazz/blues/country. It’s really a nice sound
Hope you got one. Rivals teles for most versatile guitar tones-wise.
I love that hollow body feedback squeal, but then again I also play lots of drones ambient stuff with a cello bow.
Beyond this probably being my next guitar purchase, Andy, you can rock pretty well.
+fender512 Mine too! Can't decide if it's gonna be orange or black though :D
+Bezzarr jesus i'd kill for an orange one...did you end up going that route?..if so i'll trade ya for the black lol
***** I did :D You won't be getting mine though :D But black also looks freakin' stunning dude, keep it:)
i like the black but im dying for a freaking gretsch orange lol
Wes Björnsson get it you wont regret it
The pickguard is covering the bottom part of the pickup surround. These surrounds are wider than other Gretsch pickup surrounds because the pickup body is not as wide. These pickups do sound great!
I tried one of these in London the other day.. I verrrrry nearly bought it. It was beautiful.

Nice preview. I'm glad to call this guitar my own. It can be used for many different genres :)
The last song is amazing, thanks Andy.
That last setting is real pretty-sounding!
Love going into the video with some Rev playing... 🤘
Wow! I just love hearing these guitars played so MASTERFULLY!!!!!! lol
Definitely helps me narrow my favorites down by being able to hear them being played. Thanks Andy!!

What a beautiful guitar, I love the retro green and the sound is awesome! $874 is a steal of a price.
This guy (and guitar) rules, and he's the only person I've seen review this guitar that uses that bigsby trem appropriately. Thanks dude.
Awesome looking and sounding guitar, always loved Gretsch thick hollow bodies
This video made me buy one when it first came out! Still have it and love it!!
Hey jtricer1973, you're gonna love it. It's going to be my next guitar. I picked it up in a local store the other week out of curiosity and ended up playing it for well over an hour. It was only the shop shutting that made me put it down :) An exquisite guitar.

I think an Electromatic owner should be just as proud as an original Gretsch owner, every Electromatic I've played sounds so good.
This video is what made me want to buy the 5420!
0:00 - 1:12 = probably the best part of any guitar demo on youtube
Pretty, pretty guitar. Sounds super sweet.
LUV UR PICKIN !! CLEAN AS RAIN !!
If only I could buy the guitar Andy used for each video and get just a little bit of his talent with it!
Didn't know Hollow Body guitars, what a great tone !
Reminds me of that iconic jack white hollow body
I just played one of these and a 5120 that the store was clearing out. While the pickups on the 5420 are clearly better, the 5120 had a much more acoustically resonate and more lively response.
I really really wish Gretsch would have come out with these electromatics or at least announced they were going to before I bought mine a couple months back. They sound so so much better. Although I do love my orange 5122 and as far as I can see they arent making that in the new series.
Great demo! Really validates the fact that I want one of these guitars. Going to buy one soon.
Love it, looks solidly built, and great tone range-neck looks comfortable-i want one.
A Hazy Shade Of Winter By Simon and Garfunkel... I was thinking the exact same thing!
I want a Gretsch...been listening to so many types...have to say that I like the sound of this model better than the TV Jones...just my ear I guess.
The colour is beautiful.
It doesn't sound like a BB so it has to be the Kalamzoo. Just have in mind that Andy has magic hands, and doesn't play with a pick, so his tone is always a litte warmer and sweeter than you would often get at home.
Andy, you're great man.
Lovely playing and tone
Beautiful playing!
Love these... The only thing I don't like so much is the springloaded pickup selector that is desperate to be in the middle position.
The new electromatics look awesome especially seeming they fit filtertrons properly now so you can upgrade the pickups to tv jones if wanted but in this video they sound great. Really GASing for a Pro Jet

Tomas Felipe Jaramillo The song he plays at the beginning is 'pet rock' by the Reverend Horton Heat.
yes. in fact you can play it so well that people like me repeat the first minute dozen times!
Great video and thinking of picking up one of the 2018 135th anniversary models. Been wanting to add a Gretsch and something with a Bigsby so this looks like a great choice.
got one they are great
Wow, great playing! Just added this video to my YT playlist. Gotta find out how you play those different pieces on the Gretsch. Love the sound of the Gretsch!
Great guitar players like Andy sure are inspiring aren't they?
It's Andy Atkins!
Just got the new 140th Anniversary Model 5420T - awesome 🎉No need to spend more money on a “better” Gretch -
Pure envy, I am loving these but have to dish out my Christmas gift on a Strymon Timeline. Maybe next year! :)
great demo and superb playing
Andy great playing in this one !!
Beautiful guitar and playing, Andy. Can't wait to demo this in the shop!
Very nice demo, great guitar, great player!
Beautiful guitar and i love the clean sound!
Nothing is stopping form you from playing punk rock on an acoustic guitar
Thank you Andy, great demo.
Wish these were still made with those inlays
i wish they had more colour options.

If I could make one suggestion it would be to include a song list the the video description, that would save time for lots of subscribers :)
The sound is so totally cool, im going to buy one :)
I want one mainly cuz the electromatics is all I can afford for now but it sounds great I have a 5120 and love it and I want this next
no, you are not alone in that thought.
yea it probably would look really cool.
Looks like he is pinching his fingers together and using his thumb nail to strum with, interesting idea I might give that method a go!
Andy please demo the new electromatic double cutaway with the blacktop filtertrons in !! great playing as always, cheers!
I don't see why not. Gretsch makes a Tim Armstrong (Rancid) signature model.
i have one of the pro jet's the 5435 ones chambered i love mine and i can play things like this( well sorta of, this guy is pretty damned good!) but i can rock out on it, or i can go mellow and man the feel, and other guitarists know what i am talking about there, that feel is just amazing to me
OK, thanks for the advice!
3:51 onwards....love love love
Nice cover of 'Pet Rock' by the Rev!
Now which color to choose,
yeah, that rhythm has danger!
Most of the Electromatic line is made in Korea, but they're fabulous guitars.
Honestly can't remember...either an Xotic BB Pre or Lovepedal Kalamazoo set to medium gain. Don't forget a little slapback echo too!

Love the way that one sings... 5420T must have...sell my wife's car.
I just got a G5122 and I agree...
Gorgeous!
You can even play golf with it.
