They got the factory up to speed on the new model making an exclusive run in different finishes while they sold out the old stock pre-update guitars before introducing the updated model using the regular name. Car companies usually fancy up the last year of production so they don’t have to discount them when the new model comes out, but the way Fender did this makes sense for guitars.
This was also when they switched factories to another country?

Thank you for a Great video that answered all my questions about G5420 vs G5427. I have a new G5420 in Airline Silver and I love it. I have had my eye on the G5427 Midnight Sapphire just because that blue and gold looks great...but it's good to know the GC/MF might ship a demo rather than a new guitar. I will have to clarify that with them before ordering. Thanks again!

Yeah, the pickups were a problem. I've got TV Jones in mine, but I'm about to pull the classic out of the bridge and replace it with a Hi'lo-tron, she's on the bench right now.

Oh Wow! Man that baby is pretty! Love that one, and have actually looked at it several times. Love the blue. I have that guitar (I think)... but in a Mahogony color. It's gorgeous. Not a real big Hollow-Body guy. Much more into the Semis. But I just love Gretsch, as you know, and every guitar player should have one Semi and one full hollow. I don't like the gold hardware. I think it looks cheap. So yeah - love this guitar. So cool, Joe! I might have to check one of these out.

5427 and 5420 are not identical. There is a very slight body depth difference, and a 5420 pickguard does not line up with the screw hole by the neck on a 5427. No idea why there is a such a slight difference, but there is a difference. Rad video, though.

Hey Joe. Coming up on 60 years of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Your talking about colors, wonder what color Gretsch George played that night? Anybody know?

Hey J.P. I believe his Gretsch Country Gentleman was "brown"- looked "black" on b/w tv.

Thanks for the reply Joe. Probably not a big color selection in 64

Nice, Joe! I have a couple of Gretsch models and I have never been able to bond with them. I just picked up a little solid body (cheap) with a Broadtron in the bridge and a P90 in the neck. It is soooo jangly. Not my thing. I thicken it up with gain. As for the P90, and I like P90s … this one does not seem to be height adjustable? I’d be interested in knowing if anyone else has encountered this? Finally, I saw your video talking about out your limited collection. My question is … did you do that to hide the truth from your wife or are you as good at selling them as you are as buying them?:) Tx, Joe!
