I'm so very sorry but I'm ready for it. Cast your pitchforks đŸ˜“đŸ˜©
EDIT: 😂 So after talking to a few of you, I think I understand where some of my visceral hatred is coming from.
The main character does look like Betty boop. I fucking HAAAAAAAAAATE the Boop.
Her head looks like a suitcase on top of a girl's body.
If I can make up superpowers one of them would be so she never existed.
I only learned about her a little over a decade ago when everybody and their grandmother started wearing her on their clothes.
I cannot stand that character! I'm sorry if she's an icon for some other historical thing but it just drove me in-fucking-sane.
I hate her more than I hate Barney, the dinosaur with human teeth. If I'm in a really happy mood and I look at her face or even think about her, I instantly want to smash my face through a fucking window.
I really would want to know or ask some therapist what the hell is going on with that. There's not a lot of things that do that to me, but for some reason her face and the uncanniness of the placement of her features, just sends me into a demonic irrational rage.

Gendy actually did kind of address the animation by stating that he wanted to create a serious story with a classic cartoony aspect because much of the world believes that a show, and I quote "too cartoony" can't be taken seriously story wise. To me, this truly shows that with animation normally known for comedic purposes can be taken seriously. Gendy said that the animation style was inspired by a mix of Astro Boy, Popeye, and Betty Boop's art style. Which fun fact, Gendy was supposed to do a Popeye movie, but in exchange we got the Emoji movie. Take a minute to soak that in. Lol.

    1) For the record, Primal didn't end. It's just on hiatus while Genndy Tartakovsky is working on his adult animated Sony movie, "Fixed". When the show comes back for Season 3, it'll become an anthology show. "The Primal Theory", which was a Season 2 episode, was used as a test of that concept.
    2) I actually liked the art style of this show. It has a good mix of '60s anime, '30s Fleschier cartoon, and steampunk aesthetics. I'm just not a fan of this show's pacing. Several moments either went by too slow or too fast. It was hard to take some key moments seriously! 😅

Adding to it part of why they don't feel right might be due to being awoken too quickly this time or that they're finally in the era where the Steambot was created.
On the first guess since the Steambot was woken up by the villain's minions it's intentional as MC's mind is in this weird fugue state where she's not her witch self nor her current identity, the monk is way too young to control his cosmic awareness and knight elf seems nerfed.
On the other hand since I think they're the era that the Steambot originated in .....this might be the magic starting to fizzle out.

This was the first time a show ever interested me enough to want to watch it upon debut. I immediately loved the art style so much and I’m really glad that in a time where a ton of cartoons lack distinctiveness and/or creativity in the visuals, genndy can always pull through with something that looks different and refreshing.
I really dig the bleak and quiet atmosphere, it pairs nicely with the chosen time period and I don’t think it comes off as awkward or unnatural like you said, rather laid back and reserved. I’d also argue it’s supposed to intentionally feel like a slower-paced buildup to make room for bigger things down the line. I found part of the thrill to be how we discover more about the background of the characters at the same time Melinda does. Sure, it’s not the most stimulating approach, but receiving the information this way makes it feel worth more, and I feel it ultimately has a greater impact than if it was done in a super climactic and fast-paced way.
I’m also pretty sure that Melinda being unlikable is the whole point. She lashes out at the people trying to give her guidance, but it’s justified through the fact that her memories are lost and she has to make a difficult decision. I personally think it makes for a really interesting character, and I honestly think all of the main 4 characters have really good potential based on what we see in this first glimpse of the series, Seng especially. Edred is a bit of a wild card but we really only see him during the last few minutes so it’s understandable.
Overall I’m really excited to see more of this show and it would be great to see you give it a shot. I hope you can warm up to it down the line, but if not, that’s totally fine!

I love Genndy's work and his innovative-ness! I feel like with just the first shot of episode 1, u can tell immediately it's his work! Tbh I'm not sure the reviewer would b able to continue watching based on their strong reaction to the art style. I don't think this review was even fair as while they eventually brought up points like the voice acting, they weren't able to articulate why they felt it wasn't good without going back to the unrelated dislike of art style. To me, it seems they were unable to comprehend parts of the story as well. But I digress. Anyway, I enjoyed your comment and thoughts about the show! I didn't find Melinda unlikable at all, her brooding about the situation only makes me want to find out more about how it works! It takes a lot more for me to hate someone, especially if they are someone I don't know personally.
Besides it would be a bit hypocritical of me, since artstyle is what keeps me from watching shows, that others have called some of the greatest ever, like beast wars and reboot.
It simply means you have a different criteria for your uncanny valley than others or that you have not grown up with the comics and cartoons, that inspired this shows artstyle, thereby getting used to it.
Then again I never made a 11+ minute video (have to be long enough to get monetised, right), spewing nothing but hatred and insults, at something other people seem to love, apparently with no other reason than to get views.
I would find that kind of thing distasteful and rude if not outright crass.
Now for my own thoughts on the shows artstyles
Personally I see the different art styles used as a representation of different worlds, hence why the different ages, seen in the flashbacks, use different artstyles and why the different characters change artstyle during their reawakening into their former selves.
The world is changing in ways that they might even be completely different universes.
This is best seen with Emma/Melinda who is stuck between her two selves and her character is therefore not drawn quite with either style, since she does not belong to either world.
The old-timey artstyle is a representation of the world they live in.
A time full of wonder, hope and cheer.
A world where the worst is a bit of cartoon violence, where you get a bit dirty, but are otherwise fine.
A world where the closing of an orphanage and subsequent abandonment of its charges, does nothing more than create a group of quirky rascals, who seem no worse to wear than having a couple of holes in their clothes.
At least until the ancient evil returns.
Notice how the undead elephant is drawn in a different artstyle than the background and the general population? Like that kind of thing doesn't really belong in this simple, cheerie, colourful world?

Like I know there’s a lot of mystery shows out there that make you have a bunch questions and it makes you wanna know more about the story and is meant to draw you in deeper which is what I think the show was trying to do. Unfortunately however (and I’m really sad to say this) I didn’t feel that way. 💀💀 And I hate to sound so critical because the series literally just came out and there’s only been 2 episodes and Idk it feels like I shouldn’t already be forming an opinion on the entire show this early
but at the same time first impressions are very important and my first impression of the show made me feel like I had just ingested 17 magic markers and I could see sounds and taste colors. I mean I was automatically hooked with both Samurai Jack and Primal on their first episode but this just didn’t feel the same. Oh well, I’ll still continue to give the show a chance and see if it surprises me.

It's one thing if you're not familiar with the art style, but you need to understand that the reason the character designs look the way they do is because this is Genndy's _signature_ style when he's not going for something serious, mature and / or dramatic like Star Wars, Samurai Jack season 5 or Primal. The works of Osamu Tezuka, Asterix and Obelix, and more prominently Max Fleischer are major inspirations of Genndy Tartakovsky's art style, this is visible through his other works as HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, SYM-BIONIC TITAN, and especially the cancelled Popeye movie (when he actually drew some storyboards himself) and the Luke Cage comics the most. Hell, that old school style sneaks its way into Primal a bit here and there.
Personally, I love this style because it's what I usually love about Genndy's art in general: simplicity, exaggeration and style over realism and complexity. Even when going for the Fleischer style he still finds a way to make it look dramatic and dynamic.

As with Primal, how else do you think that final battle would go? They can't hurt their enemy, they can't even touch him, they have dealt with supernatural beings before and all they could do was run. This is the first time I disagree with you. The art style is not as horrendous as you say and the animation is excellent. I don't know how you could say the drawing is bad when the drawing of your own logo is not even good. When criticizing the art style, asides from the character design, did you not even take into consideration the color scheme and the background? Sure the character designs aren't as good as Primal's (but to me it's still good), and say what you want about the design of the human characters, but the design of the robot is a chef's kiss for me. The backgrounds of this show are amazing! The perspective is on point and the color scheme is well done and blends well with the characters. But anyway, art is subjective, and you are entitled to your taste. As for me, I think this show is good so far and I'm going to see it through. Genndy is a versatile artist and if you look at his filmography, he never repeats the same art style whenever he creates a new show. I had heard about this show a bit ago and although I don't usually have CN access at home, I was able to catch this the other day on Adult Swim while on a trip. I usually enjoy Genndy's animation work, cartoony style, and gorgeous storytelling through expressions & movement... so I had a feeling I would like what I saw. I missed out on mostly all of Primal & the final season of Samurai Jack, but I liked the couple of episodes of each that I was able to catch. (WARNING: Slight U:WE spoilers below, probably)
I think its first episode was a great set-up for the basic plot & the whole reincarnation thing, but with the cartoony, almost rubber-hose-esque style & design of some things, it felt really weird & almost a bit safe for an Adult Swim show. I think I expected something more brutal, even at the start... but I did think the first episode left a good impression on me!
And I hate to admit it, but yeah I agree with you. Even I nearly tapped out on the second episode too. I get that it was focusing on Emma/Melinda and the whole struggle between this new identity she now has & what she once thought she would have after getting married, but... GOOD LORD, it dragged with the flashback stuff for much too long before remembering that "oh yeah, we're an ensemble cast" so it could add yet another new character... to join the other one that was added only moments before. Honestly, if it had only had one character per episode awaken to their past life, that would've probably worked better.
Overall, did I dislike it? No.
Did I like it? Eh... somewhat?
I did like the idea of these souls being reincarnated down the years, regardless of the time period. Also, the main setting of this turn-of-the-century British city with a bit of steampunk mixed in... is pretty cool. It looks a bit odd with the Genndy style of designs & animation, but at least the animation DOES look good to me. The character variety was pretty neat (I like the spherical robot), but I really wish a new character could have been released with each episode, instead of us having 2 of our leads awaken at the start & near the end of episode TWO.
Will I want to keep watching? Actually... yes.
I hope that things keep getting darker & start taking more risks while these reincarnated warriors start to get their spit together. I want to learn more about everyone & this mysterious, villainous threat. I really want it to improve so that those 20+ years he spent plotting, planning & working to make this a reality actually turn into something that is a subversion to what it seems like (a cartoony hero show with reincarnation & a never-ending battle of good vs. evil).

I want to like this show. I really do. And I don't hate it. But it feels confused about what it wants to do.
The stylized art is fine, I get if it's not for everyone, but the plot...
It's supposed to be about a trio of supernatural heroes reincarnated into the future to save humanity. What we got is a story focusing on the main girl struggling with the original personality of her reincarnated body. That could be fine, but Melinda is NOT AN INTERESTING CHARACTER. Her personality is basically "get away from me, you don't understand me". Copernicus is great, the elf dude is cool, the psychic is slightly annoying, but interesting enough, but Melinda is just awful.
It really feels like it cares more about her than anything regarding its original plot focus. Still, I'm going to finish it. I have hope that it will ultimately deliver a quality story by the end.

This series needed 20 episodes to really flesh out the plot & characters. I do not know why they shifted focus to Melinda. Emma’s arc was waaaaay more interesting, but now she’s Melinda’s self-appointed therapist? Why? It’s out of nowhere & poorly executed. This show had so much potential.

And there’s no little movements of them breathing or moving there eyes in panic or even thinking. It makes them lifeless and in those moments are when the art style creeps me out.

The art style is borrowing heavily from early Fleischer Brothers. The female lead is a re-skin of Betty Boop. There is a mismatch between the style and how it moved back then versus now. Old animation had a lack of anatomy and used what was termed "rubber hose" animation, but the mismatch is the old style, with mo0dern animation techniques. While Tartakovsky was ramping up with primal. SONY tapped him for a 3D animated Popey movie. This was cancelled, but he seems to still be enamored with that style.

Nah, I don't hate you Alteori. I do like the show though, and I am looking forward to seeing more. But you do bring up some good points. I knew the art style wasn't going to be for everyone. I'll admit, it took a while for it to grow on me. And the pacing could've been handled a lot better.
The reason why the art-style doesn't feel like Genndy's, is because the style is actually Stephen DeStefano's:
A long time friend and collaborator of Genndy's. The story as well isn't entirely Genndy's either. Unicorn's head-writer is Darrick Bachman. Much like DeStefano, him and Genndy go way back, working on projects like Sym-Bionic Titan and the fifth season of Samurai Jack.
Genndy has his own distinct style of story telling when he's 100% the head of the story. And in my opinion, his style of story telling is best seen in Samurai Jack, Primal, and The Clone Wars: Mini-Series. Which is all on CZcams and I highly recommend checking it out if you haven't. You'll see what I mean.

Unlike previous shows that KC had made, these characters has giant round heads with their lips where their chins should be. It was an art style I enjoyed (possibly because I'm a Fleischer fan), but the hate was definitely there from some of the viewers in the early days. There was a weird uncanny valley-ness that they weren't used to. It's considered a classic now, so I assume most fans adapted to it, but their reactions were understandable since it wasn't something they had been properly exposed to.
