Making this movie PG-13 was a huge mistake; it should have been rated R. Borderlands is a violent, rated M game, but there was almost no blood in this movie. I’m not joking-there was a scene where they were shooting people in a cave, and there was no blood, no bullet holes, nothing. Then, one of the characters threw a bomb at the enemies, and it blew up, but the bad guys looked fine-no blood at all.

Nope pander to general audiences and hope you get the masses. There's a old childrens story about a baseball player called Mighty Casey. Casey swung that bat 3 times to make the bat crackle like lightening stadium to roar like thunder. Did Mighty Casey become Zeus of the stadium that game.
No he struck out and walked back to the bench. Movie Studios are the same they want the thunderous applause of everyone. Meanwhile just hit the ball to get one base. Then with everything lined up. That one base per hit starts mounting homeruns. A consistent success not a flash of lightning to quickly fade as it loses to the darkness of the night sky.

In the game he is a hunter that was turned into a Psycho via experiments but still has his original mind underneath all of the screaming about Meat Bicycles, trying to guide his new Psycho personality in a good direction.
In fact the games seem to hint at all of the psychos being created by the big mega corps via some mass medical experiment on the miners of Pandora that got totally out of hand.

Okay so as someone who is actually a fans of the borderlands series there's actually a fair lot you could have done to make an interesting movie based on the first game alone for example.
But I'm not here to tell them what they could have done I'm here to tell you all this s*** they just messed up and destroyed.
Number one the cast of characters in the first borderlands game the cast of characters you get to play as are as follows.
Lilith: A siren (more on this later) with the power to phase shift, effective she can slip into another dimension to avoid enemies and damage. Entering and leaving that dimension causes an explosion that damages enemies. It effective acts like she's teleporting.
Roland: an ex soldier that left the army to become a vault hunter. He is just skilled with fire arms and has an auto turret that he uses to compensate his lack of special powers.
Mordecai: A sniper type bounty hunter with a love for flying animals. His unique and thing is that he has a pet bird that attacks enemies for him, gatherers ammo for him.
Brick: A literal shit brick house that is just massive, buff and tanky. His speciality is beating things to death with his own hands.
Roland is the leader of the group not Lilith.
I'm speaking about the first game.
Now there's other characters in the movie that do show up in the series.
Tiny Tina: An absolute fan favorite SIDE character who is quite literally driven to insanity due to grief. She's a demolition expert and lover of stuffed animals. She shows up in the second game.
Tanis: A fan in favorite. She's just crazy scientists that went insane due to isolation but is exceptionally smart and useful. She's useless most of the time until the 3rd game.
Krieg: One of MY absolute favorite characters. He's an ex soldier who was experimented on and developed a split personality. The insane one is in control of the body but the original mind is there speaking in the back of his head like a moral compass cricket.
    So Sirens
Sirens are a group of I believe 7 woman across the universe that have glowing tattoos on their body. These tattoos manifest when they receive their powers and each one has a specific power. When a siren dies their power goes to another woman in the universe. It's not genetically passed down or anything like that it simply picks someone random, meaning some people can be born with the power already. There's a set number of sirens and it can never increase or decrease.
    The vault.
The vault is as far as we know at the start of the first game. Just that a vault containing ancient technology and secrets from an ancient hyper advanced civilization. The one in the first game is actually an ancient prison for an universe ending threat. Go figure.
The vibe of the game is goofy with serious moments. It's characters have actual development and character mixed in with the jokes. In audio logs and notes you learn a lot about the cast and what caused them to be as they are. It's infinitely better than this shit.

    • @chrimsonphantom
      @chrimsonphantom Před měsícem

When I was watching the movie with Lilith I scratched my head once we get to see Lilith teleport the group. I thought that was Maya's power and I know each Siren has their unique power, but combined with Eridium they would enhance their powers. So yeah its like teleporting, but I don't think Lilith is able to take a group of people in the middle of the air and pop them down on the ground safely.
There is a lot of stuff they needed to do and they could've retold the first game, or if they so choose do a more original story. Because this feels like original characters hiding behind familiar names.
Tina: A clone made in hopes of fulfilling and ancient prophecy to open a vault. Thinking that she's special, because that's what she's been told all her line.
Roland: An ex commander of a major corporation, leaving on moral principles to stop the company he once worked for. Making sure that they don't get their hands on technology or power that would make them virtually unstoppable.
Krieg: A another experiment that grew attachment to one of his fellow lab rats, cannot speak properly but treats Tina as a sister.
Lilith: A mysterious bounty hunter who was sent off of pandora and forced to fight for survival, only brought back for a chance at earning money.
you could just change their names and boom you have an original group of vault hunters.

So Borderlands 1 and 2 are 2 of my favorite games of all time. I despise 3's story (look up videos on Ava if you want to know why, also they did my girls Lilith and Maya dirty), so I went into this movie knowing that it was gonna be complete garbage but wanted to see it to make sure. The only people who were cast alright were Krieg, the psycho on their team, Marcus, the guy who drove the bus, and Moxxi, the bartender. Tanis is a 30 something year old scientist who is incredibly brilliant, talks down to everybody, has no social awareness because her time on Pandora drove her insane. Tina is like a child with ADHD, runs around a lot, always blowing stuff up, fun voices, actually insane because she has ptsd from losing her parents (she's not a test tube baby). Roland is tall, masculine, the leader and is the straight man to the comedy. Lilith is a 22 year old girl who is heavily sadistic, fun loving, cocky and playful. Like one of her voice lines after you kill a bunch of enemies is that she laughs then says "I'm really good at this." She, Roland, and 2 others from the first game, Mordecai (her child hood friend) and Brick were all proud vault hunters who sought out the vault for fame and fortune. That's the premise of the first game. Not some destine child of the Eredites, hell, Tina and Krieg aren't even from the first game. The movie would've been so much fun and better if it was about those 4 meeting each other in the bus (like they do in the game), seeking the vault, and it being a gory action comedy more akin to Indian Jones than what we got. I really hope they don't make a sequel, because Handsome Jack is one of the best written villains of all time, and they would butcher him.

A movie through the eyes of Kreig would actually be brillant. What is hard to convey in the movie that is conveyed int he video game is that Kreig is actually VERY lucid. He is actually a calm and intelligent guy but he is trapped in his own mind. His internal dialog is often fighting with his own body and he struggles to convey what he is thinking as him (his mind) and him (his body) are lmost like two different characters. Like when he tries to tell himself to ask Maya (a character in the game) to help him, to tell her he is peaceful and needs her help, his body screams "I HAVE THE SHINEST MEAT BICYCLE!!" and his mind groans "and great.. you just got us killed.."
So having a movie with his internal Dialog kind of narrating and commenting would have been a brillant move

It blows my mind that Alteori doesn't realize who Lilith is... or where she may have seen or heard her before? I know I have seen you do review on How to Train Your Dragon... and maybe you missed the two series... Cate Blanchett did a voice over in two series. She was the VA for Valka. But how... how can you NOT know this is Galadrial from LOTR and the Hobbit series? How the hell could you not know Claptrap was voiced by Jack Black. Geez put some damn effot into your reviews or don't do them.

Lilith is supposed to be twenty something, 30 at oldest, and she can teleport and release a wave of flames.
She is the mage of the cast, alongside the soldier Roland, the roid guy Brick and the sniper guy. Krieg is from Borderlands 2 and wasn't even in the same team. He is with Maya, Zero and the Gunzerker guy.

At 1:54 you talk about if the story was about Tina and Krieg. Neat theory is that it's implied in the games that he may be her father. And him going crazy could be interpreted as him "dying" which is why he doesn't remember.
His BL2 character trailer also has a sane voice narrating but he seems to struggle in hearing/understanding it.

I watched the trailer and my literal first thought was: "When NONE of the main cast are on screen it looks decent". and I was more referring to the effects quality which isn't that much of an achievement in this day and age. Had they made this as an animated movie with all characters done in the style of Borderlands I may have watched it, that said they uncomfortably aged up and down characters that really don't work with the age change. Like Lilith is 10 years older than anyone with her lookout on life would reasonably be, Lilith's mom should be her estranged grandma who at best ditched her mom at the nearest orphanage, and so on..

I think the studio exec thought that the reason 'The Last of Us' and 'Fallout' were well received was because people are just enjoying video game adaptations now. Like people's interest just shifted. They didn't realize that those were both love letters to the source material made by and starring people that were either already huge fans, or who were directed to play the source material and become huge fans. Since they thought 'the public' was just into this now, they did the same thing that's been done in the past. They hired a bunch of recognizable big name actors, and slapped together a completely generic action movie with 'Borderlands' skin on it.

This movie is a retcon of the first game, they didn't have much dialog or story to begin with in the first game, it was just treasure hunting with awesome guns. B2 made these characters a family and B3 made them completely stupid and act out of characters. And Claptrap was lots of fun in the old games while in this he is suppressed for the PG 13 rating.
This movie should have been like the first game but with an actual good story, and also we should have had lots of profanity, cool gun showcase and this merc dynamic between the characters since this is the first time they should meet as a rag tag group of mercs who work together to fulfill a contract
But all we have is B1 reimagined in the story of Borderlands 3, if Ava was present here I think the cinema would have burned.(for anyone wondering who Ava is just watch some cutscenes with her in B3 and you'll see why she is hated).
