  • The Learning Pit is a celebrated way to help develop challenge, resilience and a Growth Mindset. This animation helps to explain exactly how to use it with your students.
James Nottingham created the Learning Challenge as a way to promote and enhance challenge and inquiry. James was inspired by the work of Butler & Edwards to create the Learning Challenge model that can be found on p185 of his book Challenging Learning (2010). The Learning Challenge model has now been used in many classrooms around the world. Challenging Learning by James Nottingham is available on:

The Learning Pit is something new to me but it reminded me of how important Questioning is in the classroom. The learning Pit in the classroom is a way to challenge students themselves with their own learning. The learning Pit questioning is a way to open students mind and gives them the opportunity to reflect.

Brilliant metaphor! My daughter loved learning this at school today and then we realised we could apply it instantly.

This teaching style will help me to get my students to use deeper thinking in learning new concepts.

I love this idea!! It is an amazing task to challenge the way that students think so that they truly build thinking skills that they can then apply to all subject areas. I want to think of different ways to apply this idea to my Kindergarten class. I think it would really frustrate some of the students but it would be a great way for them to learn to communicate and collaborate as well.
