I love this idea!! It is an amazing task to challenge the way that students think so that they truly build thinking skills that they can then apply to all subject areas. I want to think of different ways to apply this idea to my Kindergarten class. I think it would really frustrate some of the students but it would be a great way for them to learn to communicate and collaborate as well.

The Learning Pit is something new to me but it reminded me of how important Questioning is in the classroom. The learning Pit in the classroom is a way to challenge students themselves with their own learning. The learning Pit questioning is a way to open students mind and gives them the opportunity to reflect.

There is a quote from Duke Leto Atreides from the Novel "Dune". "A person needs new experiences. It jars something deep inside, allowing them to grow. Without change something sleeps inside of us, and seldom awakes." It feels as if there is a certain biological reaction deep within the body and mind that only activates if the challenge is greater than our comfort stimulus. However it pains me to think that, although we should be praising the one who wobbles on the bike, the reality is that there is insufficient resources or staffing in schools, and maybe lack of understanding in parents, to deeply encourage the child to feel confident enough to choose challenge over certainty of ease. That's why I believe the secret is to teach self encouragement. Teach that real praise can come from within, and that you can create your own praise and your own satisfaction from completion of your own challenges.
