Between Kevin's beat boxing, Avi's resonent bass and Mitch's amazing voice (and guitar!), this is just a tremendous work. The trio (Scott, Mitch and Kirsti went to school together in Arlington Texas and developed their mutual love of music and musical theater. After Scott and Kirsti graduated, Scott recruited them to perform in the NBC acapella competition "The Sing Off". They needed a bigger group and sound and recruited Avi through a mutual friend and found Kevin performing cello while beat boxing on a CZcams video. Spoiler alert: they won! ...and the rest is history...

Brian May is actually Dr. Brian May. He is an astrophysicist. His PhD thesis a survey of radial velocities in the zodiacal dust cloud" was published in 2007 and is a popular astronomy book of the same name. He started his research in 1970 and then stopped to run around the world in this rock band named Queen. Maybe you've heard of them maybe you haven't I had to Google them. That's sarcasm. The megaphone in a prop. Mitch does not use it in his life. Plus the voice you hear when they're looking at the stars is the same voice Mitch uses with the megaphone . Iat the night sky is homage to Brian May. Brian May was so impressed with the video that he posted it on all of his social media sites . There are 4 shooting stars and I always wondered about that because there are 5 members in PTX. I read in a comment that it's an homage to Queen because there are 4 members in Queen. At least that's how I interpret the shooting stars. The moving couch pays homage to how they started. After Sony drop them they did their own videos and uploaded them to CZcams. They would just be sitting on a couch with a camera aimed at them. I think they did them all in one take because they didn't have money for post-production or editing.
This is a link to a video titled a beginner's guide to Pentatonix

This is a link to a live version of Bohemian Rhapsody. I think it was filmed off of somebody's phone.

You asked how they found each other. Mitch, Scott, and Kirstie went to high school together, and sang together for years. Scott had the idea to audition for The Sing Off, an acapella competition when they were 19 years old. They had to have at least five members to qualify, and they knew they needed a bass and a beatboxer. A friend introduced them to Avi, and Scott saw a video of Kevin beatboxing while playing the cello. Kevin gave up medical school for Pentatonix. They got together for the first time the day before the audition, and they made it, then won the competition.

Came here to say this :)
It's really interesting because we can see their first presentation as a group, it was on tv and it's on CZcams now (if you guys are going to watch this, please, make it a react), and see how amazing they were from the start and how they only got better with every week on the show. Their first 12 or more presentations are saved, and now we can look back to them. Kirstin, Scott and Mitch were only 19 years old, Kevin and Avi were maybe a couple years older, but really young, but with the talent and practice of someone beyond their years.

@@thaiseathaydesantos Definitely a good ride for them to take. See where they came from, see how they were introduced to the public, see how the judges’ advice still molds their songs today. It’s an unbelievable journey, and if they react to Pentatonix performances on (or the whole show) The Sing-Off, I’ll watch it all :)

Aww, you guys are adorable! You’re definitely Pentaholics now, and I love watching you react to these guys :-)
PTX waited 5 years before they made this one, because they wanted to make sure it was perfect. They didn’t want to disrespect the song or Queen. They definitely worked hard on this, and it shows.
There’s a ‘making of’ video of this on CZcams also, which you might like to check out too. It shows the behind-the-scenes organising which went on, and how it was filmed etc.

You ask, "Do they know how good they are?" Well, I think they know they're good, but in the video behind the scenes of their Christmas album recording, they all gathered in the sound room after recording The Prayer to listen to the playback of their recording! They were all amazed & choked up, and Kirstin turned to the rest and said "That's us! OMG!" So sometimes they surprise even themselves! 💖

Because people usually start with Hallelujah and that's their first Mitch-slap, the part in this when he sings the electric guitar part is usually the second Mitch-slap. That moment of "Wait, WHAT is happening?" is the most universal emotion of anyone who's ever heard their songs.

I only got to hear of PTX while looking for a Christmas album in New Zealand 3 years ago. When I picked it up I knew I'd heard of them before and can only think it was a fleeting glance of their participation in one of the award shows. But I am so glad I did. They do have enough supporters here to fill a stadium though. I think their success and humility is because they've known each other so long, and their families know each other and it's just a good, wholesome vibe. At the same time one feels there must be a higher force or something else at play for these talented people to just happen to come together. It's their talent, their personalities, their work ethic, and their ability to choose the right people to join them. It's beyond comprehension, but we're the beneficiaries.

I always enjoy people's shocked reactions when they hear one of Pentatonix songs. Can't help but just submerge oneself into the music. Every song they do is simply an UPGRADE! But also, the effects are so spot on. NO ONE could have done a better job than Mitch on this one. At least in my opinion. And again, without instruments (Way to go Kevin). Simply amazing. Another Great review. I really hope you check out "Mary did you know". That one also brought tears. Again, much love from a Great Grandma in WA. State. Remember, stay true to yourselves and always stay safe in these trying times.

Enjoyed the reaction!! Kirstin, Mitch (high voice guy) and Scott (blonde) were friends since Middle and High school. They got back together to do a show called THE SING OFF, found Kevin the beat boxer online where he had created the music form "Cello-boxing" (Yes he's world class Cellist as well) Then a friend hooked them up with Avi, the bass, and they met just before the show..and the rest is musical history. They are 5 of the most talented people alive. Try "Can you Feel the Love Tonight" it's angelic. There has only been one change in the band Avi left in 2017 and Matt Sallee joined them.

(BTW, the megaphone is a prop, that was his voice) And you are correct, there are no words to describe perfection. It's difficult for your mind to accept that every sound is them. Kevin and Avi are unreal. I know you love Mitch, but if you want to see Kirsty shine, try The Sound of Silence, or Amazing Grace. Loving your journey.

      @LindaVernon Před 2 lety +2

She's wonderful in "Say Something" and Avi sings too, with Kevin "cello boxing." I think its the only where Mitch does NOT get a single solo line. It really allows Kirstie to shine, because Mitch's voice can sometimes be so similar to hers.

Pentatonix was being true Queen"s original sound engineering when they recorded this cover. As you noticed the panning from the left ear to the right ear at the beginning of the song. Then during the operatic portion the sound switches sides of the ears. You can go back the Queen's official video and listen to the song and compare the listening experience is the same. PTX is very respectful to Queen in not wanting to cut anything from the song lyrically either.

  • @loriculver7282
    @loriculver7282 Před 2 lety +4

Love watching Pentaholics being born 😊 Your reactions are wonderful! Their live performances are amazing, but there are some really bad quality phone videos out there, so be particular. They do a live performance of Hallelujah on their Christmas show that is better than the official video. Gold and Evolution of Michael Jackson would be great for you to see. Sitting on a couch in front of a couple of mics all one take. Sound of Silence is another popular one. You really can't go wrong.
One of the best live concert performances I have ever seen is Pop Spring. It features 3 originals, Cracked, Can't Sleep Love, and Water and their arrangement of Evolution of Michael Jackson. It is a little longer video, but I really hope you get a chance to react to it. Very good quality. The Honda Stage iHeart radio live performances of Cracked, Misbehavin and Can't Sleep Love are sooo good too.
This group is so humble, hard working, joyful and grateful for their success. After they won the Sing Off they all uprooted their separate lives and relocated to Los Angeles ready to role up their sleeves and get to work on the record contract with Sony that they had won. Sony canceled it two weeks later. They were crushed. But, instead of giving up, they turned to you tube and started making music together sitting on a couch in one of their apartments (that is why you see the couch references sometimes like in Bohemian Rhapsody) and the rest is history. Their official video of Starships is a parallel to their experience of losing the Sony Contract. It is wonderful!. Oh, their cover of Imagine will bring you to tears. They have a huge catalog of music so I'll shut up now 😊 You really can't go wrong with whatever you choose. I look forward to your next one!

Really enjoying your reactions to PTX. They never cease to amaze us with their unbelievable talent. They are the best when it comes to their covers, but they also have a long list of great original songs that you don't want to miss. Some of their best are "Love Again", "Run To You", " Standing By" ,"Water" and many more. Other covers you need to check out are "Gold"(Mitch is jaw dropping amazing !), "Imagine", "La La Latch", "Can't Help Falling In Love", "Sound Of Silence", "The Prayer", and for something really different and fun try "The Wizard of Ahhhs". They are known for their Christmas songs, and "Mary Did You Know" and "Silent Night (Live)" are a must. Avi Kaplan (the original bass of the group) now has a wonderful solo career and is well worth checking out too. Enjoy your adventure down the PTX rabbit hole. It's a deep and exciting one.

Scott (tall blonde), Mitch, and Kirstie grew up together from ages 8 and 10 years old. Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi (bass) joined them at the last minute when they competed on TV.. The Sing Off in 2011. The "trio" were 19 years old. That's when they started calling themselves Pentatonix. Avi and Kevin were perfect match! They all love each other and are like family.. They ended up winning the Sing Off competition. Even though Avi left in 2017, Matt is another perfect match!
Ben Bram has been their arranger ever since then. They do include instruments now on occasion but you will always know, it will be obvious. (Kevin on cello or Scott on piano)
Please react to one of their originals, SING. It is very upbeat.. was recorded in Japan and many of their high tier patreons are in the video.. a VERY happy song!

01:28 The panning on "little high, little low" pays tribute to Queen, who did the same thing on the original recording.
PTX: How are we going to do the guitar solo?
    Mitch: Hand me that megaphone!
Apparently the megaphone is just for show, as comments from people who've seen them perform this live say he doesn't use it during the show and it sounds just the same.

You two are so down to earth... And adorable! And Thank You for starting a Pentatonix Playlist. And there's a video called Beginner's Guide to Pentatonix... Even if you don't do a reaction to it, maybe watch it on your own to gain insight into their beginnings! Love you two!! 🤗 💞 But what are your names? Maybe i missed it...

I absolutely LOVE the two of you! I watch all Pentatonix reactions and yours are by far my favorite. Please keep reacting to them! They have lots of songs to react to and they are all worth watching. You have the power to keep me happy for a long time if you keep doing these!!

I have seen them live twice and I guarantee to you they are simply incredible in concert, and, no instruments!!!!

The Grassi Guitar does not require a megaphone. It is just a prop to draw attention to who is making the sound. I heard it done live and it was EPIC.

    Their live performances are incredible.
Recommend their live four song set from Popspring 2016. It’s a high quality 15 minute video with three original sounds plus The Evolution Of Michael Jackson.

I would love to see your reaction to Wizard of Ahhhs. Todrick Hall featuring Pentatonix. They select music to retell the story of the Wizard of Oz.

In response as to why you have never heard of this group, or Home Free, is because they are not mainstream. You never hear their songs on the radio. It's all CZcams. I would have never thought to find artists on CZcams until them, and to be honest, I don't even remember how I found them. Maybe a facebook post? I'm not sure. All I know is I have become a big fan of the acapella world, because of them. FYI, you guys are an adorable couple. I am a sucker for non-American accents! ;) Keep the PTX and Home Free reactions coming!!!

Just some background on this video. From what I understand the reason that they used a dirty old couch for their main prop is because they were paying tribute to the "good ol' days" in the beginning of their careers. Back then they were very broke and had no money for fancy sets and props so they made many of their first videos in one of their living rooms. They must remember those days fondly to do this now lol. It is amazing how simple this video is and yet so complex at the same time. Their level of talent is mind blowing to say the least. I was nice to see you both appreciate this talent for what it is.

To see how well they work together in the recording studio, watch/react to "Pentatonix - The Recording Of Evergreen". Really fascinating and you'll see their genius in action.. Evergreen is their latest album (Christmas) and there are several that are absolutely incredible.. OVER THE RIVER (also with Lindsey Stirling on violin and Kevin on cello!) and THE PRAYER are two of the biggest hits on that one..

Many people say they don’t do covers, they do upgrades. There is a video titled, Introduction to Pentatonix that explains their beginnings. It is very interesting however, spoiler alert, it does contain snippets of some of their music. You might enjoy it though. Great reaction!!! 💕💕
