As to the question in the title, simply hot wax your chain and you can do it monthly or less!
@@Mrich775 Yeah.... about that: They talked about that previously, and i already tried to do that at home, but the time and tools required to do that really outbalance the price of using a good lube (with wax in it, such as the MucOff HydroDynamic (developed with Team Sky)). And although this is a good lube, i don't usually use it, unless i'm preparing for a 100km ride or so. So, other than that, i just keep my chain clean with some WD-40 after each ride, and then use a little bit of MucOff/Motorex wet lube.

@@CyclingLifePT their video on it in the past was terrible honestly, go check out molten speedwax and their instructions on how to do so properly. My tech is just toss it in msw in my crock pot for 30mim to an hour then drip dry and reinstall. Simple as that.

For sore butts, dont forget that your stem height/bar reach and saddle angle play a role in how your weight is distributed across the bike. If your triceps and back feel fine but your butt is sore, try letting your upper body carry a bit more of the load.

really great vid and explanations Dr. Ollie! LOVED the saddle explanation. I've pulled expensive name brand saddles off my bikes to replace them with the $60 seat that seems to assist my poor hips perfectly. I seem to have missed that one tech show per the saddles though
After ride I use air nozzle to blow chain wet or dry. Put oil every now and then, works for me.
Just on the lube frequency, I use rock n roll lube which cleans as your lube. I find with this type of lube its best applied every 2nd ride in dry conditions as it gets no build up.
Great advice on the saddle issue the user was having. A third possibility... I noticed as temps went from Summer to Autumn.. I had a habit of hydrating at intervals and I was the drinking same ammount at 12 degrees C as I was at 28. Needless to be said... I was racing like a piss horse!

Re: The *@peter hedley* rear derailleur question - Like Ollie suggested, start from scratch INCLUDING *_to check that the RD is positioned correctly on your new RD hanger._* On my first new build I had the RD rotated back ~20 deg and the Di2 would not shift into the bottom two gears - one inept LBS charged me over $100 and could not troubleshoot this; a second one found it in five minutes.
As a 60 year old who started serious cycling in the early 80s, standard gears were what everyone used. I still have a standard chainset and tiny cassette on my 20 year old Casati aluminium road bike. When I got a carbon fibre Giant Defy in 2019 it practically rode itself. We were 'ard in my day.
This. Now cyclists spend more energy discussing couple of watts or expensive fidget spinners, instead of going out and putting same efforts into miles. These days 95% of bikes are light, durable and differ by nuances important for top level athletes, not most of amateurs.

You can use 53-34 too ... I swap between 53-39 and 53-34 / 11-28 or 11-36 on my roadbike when necessary. My mechanical Ultegra groupset does it all.
Binyamin's q about saddle comfort - worth also noting that saddle discomfort might not be anything to do with the actual saddle. It could just as easily be down to bike fit.
In fact I've heard some fitters say that while specific saddle models might be more or less comfortable for you, if you are experiencing serious discomfort it probably isn't the saddle causing it.
It sounds like you could have too much weight on your saddle - and a bike fit could help you achieve a riding position that balances it more evenly across your contact points.
A bike fit can be expensive, but is probably a better investment in the long run than buying lots of saddles.
I might point out that different lubes have different service lifetimes. I am using Morgan Blue touring. It has a light transport oil and a heavy grease type lube combined. The lighter components make the grease penetrate every part of the chain. The lighter ones evaporate or are thrown off. Leaving a relatively clean outside on the chain. But the inner surfaces can remain lubed for several thousand km of riding if it isn't raining. Lighter lubes create less drag but are thrown off more quickly. Good for racing but needs more regular attention. Choose what is right for your type of riding.
I use Finish Line's Ceramic Wet Lube in rainy Thailand, even when its not raining because it lasts the longest of its products. Finish Line states one application will last 175 mi/280 Km for Ceramic Wet Lube but also notes that it takes 3 applications on a new chain to coat all of the surfaces with the ceramic material with 2 days between the initial applications. For Finish Line's Ceramic Wax Lube it states it will last 120 mi/190 km.

Compact or standard cranks... Wouldn't it be a good idea to make a different combination? 52-36 for example? Changing one chainring would be the cheapest option to spread your gears. The gap between chainrings will get bigger but can be compensated with one or two clicks more at the rear.
An 11-34 11sp Shimano cassette needs the 1.8mm spacer as it's 10sp freewheel compatible. Fit that and everything should work as before without fiddling with the gear indexing
Derailleur needs the distance between the cassette and the upper derailleur pulley wheel adjusted. When the derailleur is to close to the cassette it may skip when you back pedal if the alignment is not perfect. Adding the longer cage means you need to make this adjustment.
I only use dry lube for 12 months of the year in the UK. I donât ride in the rain and clean my bike and re lube after every Winter ride. I absolutely love Muc-Offâs standard yellow top 4 step dry lube. Itâs spotlessly clean and quick and easy to wash out after every WINTER ride.
Iâve tried expensive waxes and all sorts of lubes but this ÂŁ4 supermarket offering is my favourite

Hi GCN! Love the videos! New biker here. I just bought a road bike a few months ago. My current tires are700x25c. I don't really want to be all competitive and just want to do city rides/work commute and touring. Although going fast is a great thing on 25c tires, I would also want to have more security and grip especially during rainy days. Would changing to 28c tires (the widest I can fit in my frame, I think and I'm not even really sure if they would fit) be good option or is there something I can do with my 25c to have better grip? #AskGCNTech

Agreed - no need to lube ever ride (in good conditions), but I DO wipe the chain off with a paper towel every time. Also, how about a video on how to match your position when you have two bikes e.g. winter and summer bikes?
No need to. No one wipes off or lubes a motorbike chain every ride and they last forever.
Hi, #AskGCNTech, I use rollers (tacx galaxia) for my indoor training but I start to dislike that I need to concentrate every second to not fall off. I don't fancy buying a new set of indoor trainers, but I've come across a 'bike support front wheel mount' specific for my rollers. Does this compromise the feeling of the bike? Is it just a safety measure or can you use this wheel mount to 'zone out' (like I would want to). Thanking you in advance. Keep up the nice videos!

Hi, I have an external gear cable on my winter bike that is exposed (i.e. no outer cable) from the top of the down tube, through a BB guide, and to the end of the chainstay. Iâd like to change it to a full outer cable. Are there conversion kits available for this that deal with the cable guides on the frame, or do I need to drill these through to enable a solid length of outer cable to run through? Also, do I need a new BB guide, or can I just zip tie it to keep it secure like brake cables are? Appreciate your help! #askgcntech

On the topic of lubing, I have waxed my chains for a while thinking that it is probably not just one of the best lubricants but also one of the most hardy. I recently played the part of a mobile drink station/domestique for my brother when he did his virtual London Marathon - the day was much wetter than expected and I ended up riding through some much deeper water (knee deep when stood up in the pedals and it was horrible flood water) than the 1" deep puddles/damp Berkshire weather I would usually tackle. It had completely killed my chain when I next got my bike out a couple of days later (I had hosed it off after) i.e. it had rust visible at the links and was noisy as hell - was it the wrong type of lube, poor application or just utterly stupid use of a bike? #AskGCNTech
#GCNTech how much should I lube my chain for the winters while I have a dedicated bike on my indoor trainer? Should I change to a dry lube while its inside and since there are no outside contaminants, what are general rules about how often to apply more lube?
I just came across this-- for indoor trainers, go with wax! It's so much cleaner and doesn't attract grime like wet/dry lubes tend to do (the science behind wet/dry lubes suggests that they clean themselves out by being used over distances- typically outside on the road/trails- so on a trainer, they just turn into mud bombs). My trainer drivetrain used to be a gross mess.
Since I've been waxing, I first tried a drip wax and it worked fine... but I wanted to go all in, and am now using immersive hot melt.
A wax based drip is still much better than any wet/dry lubes for this purpose by a country mile, so you don't have to go hot melt if you're not into the (minor) hassle.

#AskGCNTech Hey! Iâve got Roval Rapide CLX wheels and recently put some Vittoria Corsa Control tyres on for winter. For my ~83kg weight, Roval recommends 89PSI whereas Vittoria recommends 125PSI. Generally, who should I be listening to-the wheel or the tyre manufacturer? Is it even usual for wheels to recommend a tyre pressure? And what might explain such a huge discrepancy between the two? Comparing like for like, I know that discs are superior (particularly in wet conditions) but how would a top-end rim brake (e.g. 105 or even Ultegra) compare to a low end disc brake (e.g. Sora or something cheaper?) In other words, would a cheap road bike with budget disc brakes still have better braking performance than an expensive road bike with performance-level rim brakes, or would the superior component quality close or even reverse the gap?

#askgcntech I have a 2010 SRAM red group set that the front derailleur will not stay in the big ring. When I swing the shifter, and hold it, it will go to the big ring, but when I let go, it immediately falls back to the small ring. I already checked the set screws, cable tension, cleaned all parts, including the shifter, but nothing worked. What could be causing this issue?

#AskGCNTech I want to upgrade the cranks on my Grail CF SL to something lighter. I have noticed that MTB cranks are usually lighter. Can they be fitted to road bikes? Also I like the style of ALDHU cranks but Rotor has much lighter carbon MTB crank arms. They look like they would fit the road ALDHU axle, do they? Thanks!
Even if they fit, the q-factor is different (offset of the pedals, or how wide the distance between them is.
Mtb-cranks have a larger q-factor for clearance, but smaller is better biomechanically iirc.
So even if it fits, it might not be the best fit for your legs and knees especially
#AskGCNtech why are most brakes lever setups are relatively opposites side one on the other. For example; If I were to setup my Cyclocross bike front brake is on my right hand side and my rear is on my left hand side as same with my mountain bike brake setup. Most brakes setups or built are setup the opposite of mine.
My question, is their a specific reason to this or is it more of a personal preference?
I just changed the cassette on my bike since my old one was a little worn, but when I got on my bike I could feel something clicking when pedaling especially in harder gears (i.e. it didn't feel smooth). According to my LBS the freehub needs replacement as it's no longer engaging properly. My question is, why did it seem perfectly fine on my old cassette? (I went from 8s 11-34 to 8s 11-32, but I don't think that difference is relevant) #askgcntech

Why does my mech shift well in gear 1 thru 7, but 8-9-10 hesitate for two,or three pedal rotations before shifting. This happens whether big or small up front.

Good question Niels, we've found that lower ranged components which are more modern can often have better performance, but that's completely up to you
I've been worrying about how to remove those blackish oil build-up on my chain. I was able to wipe off most of it, but I knew, there are still left at the areas that only brushes can reach and also the rear derailleur cage.

Dip it in lamp oil in a plastic bottle and shake vigorously. Let it sit for a while. Then do the same with dish soap and water. Rinse well with water and pat dry with a towel and a blower/hair dryer. Dip the chain in pure alcohol to dilute every last drop of water. It should evaporate quickly. Then put a drop of lube in every roller or give it a bath in molten wax.

No, SRAM Road 12-speed has its own gearing configuration. The chain rollers on SRAM Road 12-speed chains are larger than other chains', so it won't allow for full chain and teeth engagement.

Squirt is great....lasts for several hundred kms, can survive wet conditions and leaves you with a nice clean chain. I have reapplied it to a degreased chain and its fine

@3:30 i think the guy might have threaded his new chain the wrong way over his rear derailleur cogs (jockey wheels).. I did this myelf and seems to skip over the metal bar that separates them.. scratched my head a few times and realised my error.. may be the solution?

#AskGCNTech Have Shimano SPD mnt bike style cleats. On different bikes with different pedals, I get an annoying squeaking. Sounds like a creaking BB, but does it on different bikes with different BB types, so something to do with the cleats/shoes. Any suggestions?
Try a small drop of oil underneath the front tip of the cleat (the side facing the sole). It will also make engagement and disengagement easier.

How do you know itâs before itâs going to start squeaking? Crystal ball?
â@@grobbosixtyone Pay attention to how quietly the chain is running and how easily it is shifting. Be in tune with your machine. It's not a black box.
Well before it squeaks there is a sort of a "rattling" sound that comes from the rollers. The oil serves as a cushion that dampens this noise. Once you hear the rattle there isn't much of a film between parts. Incidentally a clean steel chain often will not squeak even if bone dry. Tiny amounts of rust seem to really ramp up the squeaking sound.

Wondering do we need to clean the chain and drivetrain after every ride. I do notice it turns black and attracts lot of fine gravels (roads here have lot of fine gravel and its very windy most of time). I've been cleaning it once a week with dry cloth but don't lube after every clean but once a month when I give bike for servicing.

You can clean your chain in diesel or kerosine types (like for the petroleumlamp) of fuel if needed. only lube if the chain feels dry, that could be every ride. if it feels sandy, time for the dieselbath.

Question: Can I really use all-weather lube in all weather conditions? You often talk about dry lube or wet lube on GCN when probed on lube. My local bike shop said all weather lube was just fine (e.g. ProLink Chain Lube). Iâm new to cycling and want to get the most out of my rides (longevity and performance) and most importantly not develop bad habits for the future where I say to myself âeverything is just fineâ - when it really isnât or shouldnât be..! Thank you :)
All weather lube is perfectly fine to use. The only disadvantage over dry lube is that it will attract more dirt so you'll need to clean your drivetrain more often.

#askgcntech recently my chain fell off as i was cycling. had a bit of a hard time putting it back on. can you give me some tips on how to put the chain back on fast and efficiently?
If it falls 'into' the frame, shift to a higher chainring and then turn the cranks clockwise.

Can you recommend a flat post mount hydraulic brake system for use with flat handlebars . My gravel bike has flat mounts for brakes but I use flat handle bars . I currently use cable brakes as canât find anything suitable to upgrade đ
Maybe take a look at the mountainbike hydraulic brakes those are made for flat bars.

A major reason for needing to pee every 5 minutes is all the coffee a lot of us are dependent on - it irritates your bladder and is a diuretic! The need for comfort breaks is also inversely proportional to the numbers of layers you are have to remove to go! (See âWhat to wear in winter vidâ!)

Is it normal that when I put my bike on my indoor trainer (Kickr Core) my gear become unindexed? I no longer have access to my 11 tooth and the shifting isnât as smooth. Iâm running GRX if that helps #askgcntech
What is the cassette on the bike on the road? If it's an 11-34, do you have the spacer in there? If not, your gears won't be indexed on the trainer if you don't have the same set-up

#AskGCNTech I am recovering from a mild stroke and loss of precise mobility of my left side, including my foot. As a result, clipless shoes and pedals are not an option. I wondering if you might know of a source for vintage (80's - 90's) road shoes, cleats, pedals and cages. Holy Balls, never thought I would be calling my self vintage:). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I got some vintage-style toe clips at Decathlon, only âŹ10 and decent quality. You should be able to find them at lots of shops. Good luck!

To the questioner with a stuck blimit screw... If you have disk breaks be very careful when spraying the limiter screw as you'll contaminate your pads if you get any of that spray on it.
