I always melt fiber on the front side of the sight and cut the rear slightly shy of the back end such that the melted ball on the front collects light and having a slight recess on the rear results in less light wash and makes the sight appear a bit brighter - kind of like a shade on a traffic light. I'm sure the difference is negligible, but always more than one way to skin a cat!
By not having the rear extend past the end, do you run the risk of the fiber falling out of the front after a few rounds? It seems part of the reason to heat both the ends is to allow the fiber tips to “mushroom” securing the fiber in the sight.
Green is the easiest colour for the human eye to pickup. We see green as being brighter than any other colour, so there is a better colour as far as physiology is concerned. Manufacturers include both colours because they're after sales and nothing more.
I’ve never used the blacked out rear setup, I’m thinking of getting a colt commander and doing this. I’m just worried about having trouble lining up the rear sights, especially in low light a lot objects appear black. Is this not something to worry about? Or how do you adjust coming from traditional 3 dots.
Are all fiber optic replacement cables the same or equal? I've got a set of sights that I'm not sure of the manufacturer that blows away every other fiber optic site I have. I sure do wish I could remember who I purchased them from because whatever fiber optic they used was significantly better than the rest. I think it may have been Dawson. I am certain it was NOT Truglo because that was the sites I replaced. The Truglo were dull and only illuminated in direct sun light. I got the replacement sites a few years ago for my M&P 22 pistol. At the time, the pistol was new on the market and they had an odd size dove tail that only a handful of companies were making replacement sights for.
I saw you have an RMR glock, do you use the green fiber optic on that glock as well? I just got my dawnson back up sight for my RMR glock and I am conflicted between using the red and the green in conjunction with my RMR. I find the green faster than the red, but I feel like it is slightly distracting when trying to focus on the dot.
I know it’s been 5 years but it’s distracting because you’re not shooting the dot correctly. Don’t focus on the dot, focus on the target and impose the dot to it. If you’re target focused you’ll never see your front sight in your sight picture.
That technique of melting the end before installation is way better than how I've seen everyone do it

Green then yellow. Those 2 colors your eyes focus on faster than any other color of the spectrum
Guess what color isn't naturally occurring and is subconsciously associated with danger?
I'm red/green colorblind but there are different degrees...I can't pick up on the red easily at all. I can pick up the green very well.
What works for me is a black adjustable rear sight and a green front fiber optic.

I run yellow in the rear, green up front.

Thanks, good video instruction. Just what I was looking for.
Had hi viz few pieces with my new Springfield and was curious very clever yet very simple! Thanks guy!
I'm just here to make sure the videomaker knew what he was doing..
Do you prefer the green over the red fiber optic?
Red on my pistols, green on my rifles.
I'm gonna try that
I just installed a green in my Beretta and works perfectly in daytime BUT DO NOT WORK AT NIGHT.

Godawfull That is a great question...Too much info to type. I’m going to address your question in a video and will post it tonight.
