A testament to how great Ferrothorn is comes directly from the length of the video. This is, at the time of writing, the third longest episode to date, behind only the Charizard and Chansey/Blissey videos. However, both Charizard and Chansey have been around since Gen 1, Blissey's been around since Gen 2, and Charizard had gotten two Mega Evolutions and a Gigantamax form. Ferrothorn, meanwhile, has been around for half as long and has had no alternate forms discussed, but its history in the metagame is so profound, it demanded an hour-long video itself. It's just that good.

Ferrothorn is that guy every sport has that always shows up to practice/training, never skips a day, always signs up for any and all competitions and always does well. He might not win or even be the favorite at any given tournament, but anybody who has any aspirations or dreams of being the best knows they have to beat this guy to stand a chance.
This guy doesn't do anything fancy or surprising, it's just raw fundamentals, a healthy approach to life and the game, and a never say die attitude.
If you ask casual spectators who their favorite competitor is, not many people are going to mention this guy because he might be kinda boring, but anybody who knows a lot about the sport, either because they've been around for a long time or because they've competed themselves, all say that they respect the hell out of him for his consistency and commitment and they always know he'll put up a good fight and whenever there's a conversation among experts of who's the GOAT, he'll always be mentioned, not because he necessarily has a ton of trophies to his name, though he does have plenty, but because he's always there, at or near the top of the game, no matter what.

Note: While ferrothorn is definitely a factor in zacian running sacred sword, the main reason zacian runs sacred sword is so that it doesn't have to deal with defense drops, as defense drops make it harder to use zacian's good bulk, something a lot of players are investing in right now. Also noted that ferro has fallen off a fair bit due to the rise of rinya sun and swordfish teams transitioning to rilla as their grass type.

Ferrothorn might be the first Pokemon I've seen that has a decent HP stat with good Defense and Special Defense. The best you'll often see from wall and tank Pokemon is to have 2 of those 3 things going for it, like Blissey's high HP and Special Defense but terrible Defense, or Shuckle having both great defenses with awful HP. Ferrothorn's only weakness is, well, it's only weakness, fire (I forget if grass makes it neutral to fighting). A neutral hit from either the physical or special side will just be shrugged off.

All of Gen4, Water Types felt almost busted because their only real counter (grass types) really really struggled to make a lasting impact, since Grass has sooo many resists. Meanwhile Grass Types always had to fear Ice Attacks, ensuring Water Types made progress. Roserade showed the potential of a Spiking Grass type that used hazard stacking to ensure progress, but its fear of Physical Water types and Ice Beams always made it shaky as a general purpose Water-Type counter. Even before Gen 5’s announcement there were actually more than a few players in Smogon theorymonning/wishing for a well rounded bulky Grass/Steel type that used Spikes or otherwise had a way of forcing progress outside trying to use Grass Attacks. At the time we wished for such a Mon as a needed balance to the overwhelming dominance of Bulky Waters, but we didn’t think its actualization would not only end the the archetype of Suicune/Milotic/Swampert-like Pokémon completely, but become one of the most dominant OU Pokémon of all time.

I think Ferrothorn is one of those rare pokemon that completely changes the face of OU without "overcentralizing".
It is an absolute powerhouse of a threat that NEEDS to be one most, if not all, teams. But if the temperature rises above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, it absolutely turns to ash and molten metal. Fire is not an uncommon attacking type. It makes sure that both teams are using it, but it's easy to deal with. It keeps the meta from being centralized because you need a counter for Ferro...and a counter for its' counters. And a counter for *its'* counters. And a bulky Grass/Steel, a strong and/or fast Fire, and a similarly bulky Water...is just half your team *anyway*. And it's not for one pokemon because that Water-type is likely going to be there ANYWAY because Bulky Waters are a staple.

I got back into Pokemon during XY, but didn't start competitively battling until ORAS. I remember watching Poketubers and wondering why a slow and fairly ugly Pokemon with a 4x Fire weakness was so common in their wifi battles. Then I started competitively battling myself and realized just how incredible Ferrothorn was

I knew Ferrothorn’s video was gonna be a lengthy one and boy was I right! I’ve been so interested in how Ferrothorn performs throughout the generations because I know it is very popular and reliable, but I did not know to what extent. I’m glad this video gave me a lot of insight into just how amazing Ferrothorn really is! Thank you False Swipe Gaming team! 🙏

One funny thing is, when I was younger, I used to have in a team a Ferrothorn with Rocky Helmet and Curse, Power Whip, Payback and Gyro Ball as it moves, and it still was performing decently well. So, I guess, even with its most inconvenient sets, a Ferrothorn is a fucking Ferrothorn XD

Thanks for this massive and comprehensive Ferrothorn video. Ever since I picked Ferroseed up for the first time playing Black this thornball has been a favorite of mine.
I think that one of it's most interesting characteristics is that it keeps showing up in VGC too, truly versatile.

God what an amazing Pokemon. I'm always happy when a Gen 5 Pokemon is good in competitive, especially a non-legendary, so naturally I'm overjoyed to see Ferro be not only good, but one of the best Pokemon of all time.
