  • A step by step transformation of a conventional outdoor pool into an Organic Pool. This was a completed by the owners and friends with the intermittent help of David Pagan Butler. The pool has a relatively small planted zone so an Olive Bioflter (invented by David Pagan Butler), provides additional water cleansing.

Let's hope they don't have a well meaning neighbour, when they're away who tries to clean it with artificial detergents. A cold water pleci' might do the trick, although they'd be better off waiting for the nutrients to be taken up by the plants, and possibly using some water lilies to reduce the light levels to the internal surfaces of the pool - which I'd prefer over filling the pool with inflatables

David, Ohio fish Rescue converted their indoor pool into a massive fish pond using the same techniques as an organic pool. Of course they needed a higher flow rate and filter bed ( livestock produce waste ) but they've succeeded beautifully with very low nitrate and no algae.
They used pumps and the entire floor of the pool (gravelled 60 cm deep) as the bacteria bed + plants beds like these to take up phosphate, nitrate etc, also a waterfall for aeration.
An added problem was that some of these giant fish are herbivores so no plants in the pool.
( Unfortunately the pet industry keeps selling fish that , when adult, grow to 2, 4, even 10 feet in length. So these guys rescue, home and rehome aquarium fish species that have outgrown their owners tanks.)

Dpb, thanks for adding another video. It's great to see how a standard swimming pool can be converted to a more naturalised swimming pond. I know a few people who have had swimming pools installed, only for them to complain about the cost of heating and running them, and that they take up so much of their gardens. Worst of all, when they're not in use, they don't benefit anyone or anything.

I know you posted this comment a year ago lol but this video straight away reminded me of "cycling" a fish tank.
The levels of rock and plants provide detoxification of ammonia that would build then get "cycled" by the biological filter in the substrate. You might get some alge but that biological filter will stop any sort of nasties that are bad for you (or fish) building up.
I can only assume that green plastic thing in the filter outtake (maybe even the inlet too??) and that's where all the nasty brown stuff is ending up, like in the filter of a fish tank. After it is pumped down the rock.
Idk I just thought this method was so interesting I wanted to comment 😃😃

You'd best check out dpb's previous videos. The floating filtration unit you saw at the beginning is his Olive powered by compressed air. The filtration used on this system is pretty standard to all his ponds using gravel filter beds interplanted with plants to take out the nutrients from the pool / swimming pond, using air stones to uplift water from the planted beds, so recycling water through them and aerating the water. It's just a shame they haven't integrated a few fish to feed off the algae in the pool, altho I suspect that this could cause a greater amount of waste that would need to be siphoned off the bottom of the pool, as fish waste often sinks.

I always heard that using cement in a pool without a liner causes problems with alkalinity in the water that then requires ph buffering. How was this concern addressed in this build, was the cement sealed or treated in some way? Thanks!

At one point you can see them applying a sealant. If david could expand on what type of cement and sealant were used it would be appreciated.

brian sullivan yes exactly my question. They seem to be applying it with a roller which means if it is a pool paint, the pool will need to be periodically drained and re-painted which is more maintenance than a liner would require and a problem if you end up with leaks in the planted zones since they would need to be emptied and cleaned to re-paint. I have a cement pool that I am planning to add a liner to but it would be simpler to not do that if there is a solution that has the same benefits as a liner that can be applied directly to the cement. But I always believed that the alkalinity problems inherent to cement products was a problem in maintaining ph even with plenty of plants and a paint doesn’t seem like a good long-term solution. Thanks!

Mosquitoes usually need stagnant water to breed.

@@madamogee9041 Well, I had a small barrel pond that I usually kept goldfish in. It had water plants and a water pump circulating the water. One year my goldies didn't make it through the winter and some frogs made it their love den. I thought it was cool. Soon after it became the frog, polliwogs and mosquito hatchery. That's why I asked.
