  • PART ONE HERE: • Ultimate ART PRO VLA I...
I shouldn't have to tell you to make sure to use QUALITY headphones or studio monitors to discern the differences, but here we are.
I have NO connection to any brand or company here. This is done on my own dime. These are personal units I bought and paid for and I have received zero compensation from anybody... and I mean anybody. I can only dream of a situation where I don't actually go in debt making you tube videos!
Hear a Stock version, A Version with Carnhill Transformers and full Revive Audio Modifications, and a Cinemag Transformer Revive Audio full mod unit! As closely as possible, same settings were used, however occasionally due to the inherent differences in the units, a tweak happened here or there... and in some clips the differences were just impossible to negate and it's very obvious. which. is. the. point.
Please feel free to comment with questions or for further specifics on the process.

    TIME STAMPS:
00:36 DRUM BUS (PLUS each instrument has also been treated with the specific unit, so it's double the flavor.)
01:31 KICK DRUM (I decided to just go with a heavy gated kick here for the example because the kick is actually two mics bussed to one track (Dynamic inside and a LDC out front) and with the condenser out front, solo'd it sounded more like a room mic than focused solely on kick so...enjoy). The attack is key here.

    02:34 SPACED PAIR OVERHEADS

The revive mods involve a bit more than just transformer switch out or is it fir sure only that, in this partic occasion?

Its a tube - opto compressor only. Theres no transformers in this unit. Im not sure what revive audio is selling you? Has sold you.

Seriously. It takes a minute maybe to go check out Revive (or any other mid company modifying gear like this).
      Go see what's up.
Then, go on and listen. If it's worth the cash is a personal thing... But I saw a Cinemag Pro VLA on Reverb for $400 last week and THAT is a deal.
      -Thanks for the comment!

Yup , I did long ago. They ADD an output transformer. Which in case masks over the sound of the tube output. Personally I would have left it alone. But to each their own.

      @@Gretsch0997 Correct.
      These VLA's have output transformers...
Would you not add the TX for sound reasons, or some other reason? Does it not make enough difference to your ear? Serious question.
Personally, the subtleties between the Cinemag and Carnhills opened up a door for me. Without the weight and/or definition each brought to the table, I wouldn't probably use a VLA. Not AFTER having all three in house to use and figure out.
I have a few JBL 7110's which had the option of adding a TX as well... (I have one with a TX and 2 w/out) These sound much closer than the VLA's do when comparing, but still... there's a bottom end thing that happens which if the option is there, always makes it a no-brainer as a choice. In my place. Just different in a way that sets it into a mix easier. Why? not a clue. But blind tested multiple times.
Have you personally used transformer VLA's? Would dig your thoughts.

@@SHUTUPANDRECORD Some of the greatest tube compressors use transformers in the input and output. Fairchild, Teletronix, Tubetech, Universal Audio, UREI, etc...I don't think the person above you knows what they are talking about.
