  • PART ONE: Acoustic 12 String, D.I. BASS, Male Vocal (Time Stamps In Description Below)
Hear the sonic differences between a STOCK ART PRO VLA II, then one modified by REVIVE AUDIO with Carnhill Transformers, and one modified by REVIVE AUDIO with Cinemag Transformers.
I purchased these units myself, with my own money, and have NO AFFILIATION with ART or REVIVE. I'm just a dude with all 3 that thought the world needed this video.
All examples are THE SAME CLIP, processed through each unit as noted on the screen. There is NO other processing of any sort (until it is uploaded to CZcams and they do whatever they do.
Meticulous effort has been made to get the clip levels to match as closely as possible, BUT because these are three different devices with different behaviors... A decision was made to keep the Peaks Dead matched, and then just try to make the waveforms look as close to each other as possible. It should also be noted that the point of this video was to push the units until their own character shows clearly... so settings were about HEARING the machine working, vs. subtlety... Understand that I showed one trick of these ponies, but they have many more. .
Just put on your good headphones, or sit in front of your best monitors and focus. The differences are plain and obvious, except when they're not!

As an owner of several stock ART compressors, channel strips and mic pre’s and a nerd of studio gear in general - I absolutely loved and appreciated this video. Can I come through and hang out with y’all? Haha. Great work! Keep it up ✊🏽

Dude you are awesome for doing this video. My Art Pro pre amp just broke after 14 years of ownership. I was about to sell it as a broken item on eBay just to get another one. But now they have gone up in price 50%! I just paid a little more than $600 for a new Art Voice Channel!

So you bought the Voice Channel?
A long time ago I had .. I can't remember if it was the Voice Channel or the Pro Channel... ART is always good stuff, as far as my experiences have shown.

Dude I totally appreciate your videos and what you do! Anyways, the Cinemag sounds a little gritty but not so much on the mix,
and the Carnhill sounds warm and gluey and stock sounds somewhat similar to Carnhill but with a different tone. In my opinion. Thanks man!

the difference is so subtle that I prefer the art as it comes from the factory and for the price of the mod buy another. I have vla 1 and 2, I like vla 1. forget to occupy them in the master bus, the image is horrible if you don't know how to calibrate each channel individually, the biggest problem is that they eat up the bass or the low end a bit (vla 1 and 2). but they are glorious for monophonic shots of any kind or stereo things like synths... I had a summit dcl 200 and an avalon ad 2044 compressor and for sound I always preferred the art, the construction and the chassis are decent, as a friend says, never judge the book by the cover.

The difference is very not subtle on my monitors. I was actually blown away at the way each bottom end offered something different. I agree though, that the ART VLA is awesome, not just for the money. Period. Awesome! -Marty

  • @EvilPimpTheUndergroundKing

So let me ask which did you prefer the most especially on vocals? I just picked up a weight tank wt comp and now I need a stereo comp the vla 2 I used in the past and it was good. Maybe with the cinemag it will better.

    • @SHUTUPANDRECORD
      @SHUTUPANDRECORD  Před rokem +1

The Cinemag was overall Cleaner, but with muscle... The Carnhill is softer, maybe chewier.
Cinemag a bit more forward, Carnhillmore tucked into mix.
If any of these subjective descriptions are helpful haha
The Stock was less subtle than either.

It's amazing how running sound through stock ART PRO VLA II makes it sound WORSE than with no compression.
Just like putting silk cover over the speaker, it's subtle, but clearly worse.
Cinemag sounds less dynamic than Carnhill, but more natural. Carnhill takes the cake as far as dynamic range and overall sound of instruments. Just imo.
I had ART PRO MPA II, never liked the sound even with Telefunken tubes in it.
I sold it for almost same price I bought it for. It sounded a bit better, but it was muffled like PRO VLA II stock

Thanks for watching and the comment.
Yeah, Carnhill is my favorite. Cinemag somehow in my mind is cleaner, but cleaner is not really accurate. It's just that the Carnhill does a thing that's I guess... creamier?
I did end up selling my stock one. I think it is a really awesome compressor to learn about compressors and what they do, on.
I love that you can always find one for cheap , and always get that same money back out of it more or less. I think it makes it a classic of sorts.
On the MPA: I had a revive Audio modded one I wish I hadn't sold. It was so good on room mics.
I keep an eye out and someday one of those will pop up for a steal and I'll buy it and hide it down at the bottom of the rack, because I think people already think Im a ART fanatic. I've just found, from doing these blind tests, and deep dive comparisons, that if the judgement is purely on ears... the smartest (and often cheapest move, is to not gaf about brand name. Easier to do when you're not trying to attract paying clients.
Anyway, thanks again for watching and the insightful comment.

I got one of these units and could not get it to stop buzzing. I tried everything, so I sent it back believing it was defective and ordered another one. Guess what...same problem! This cannot be an isolated case. Either way I popped for a Warm Audio unit instead...and guess what...NO NOISE! Thanks for wasting my time ART!
