The kite story: people glued glass bits to the string to engage in kite battles, the object being to cut the other kite's string. Unfortunately, the string trailing behind as a kite falls can cut as an out-of-control kite dives into a crowd of people.
i can confirm. i grew up with the kite battles here during 1990s.
In Brazil, that's is pretty popular in poor areas specially in summer break when kids are out of school (yep kids with dangerous strings with glass...) cutting other people's kites and reclaiming them to yourself is common. usually there are also a lot of accidents because kids try to reclaim kites that are falling on the roadway.

Although banned at most kite festivals in north America & many other places,it is common in many parts of the world….like…India,Pakistan,Napal & Brazil.It’s called Manja line & is used in kite fighting.(look up fighter kites).The line is tough stuff on its own,but it’s coated with resin & then powdered glass.It’s hazard enough to people and wildlife,but what makes it worse is that often it is left or abandoned after use.It’s particularly dangerous when taught but safe enough when loose,it’s not actually big chunks of glass.
over here it was a common occurrence too, until one to many bikers got beheaded by the kite strings.

To explain the eye color thing, Punnett Squares are accurate, but the standard only works for simple traits. Things like eye color and hair color are determined by a combination of multiple genes, so rather than a 2x2 grid to determine results you're running a 3x3, 4x4, etc. based on the complexity of the result.
Not to mention that final phenotype is dictated by gene expression rather than genes presence. Which in turn can be affected by whole slew of things. (Like, let's say bugs in methylation or mutations during embryo's development). One of the parents can have genes for melanin production, but if they don't express for any reason, it will result in gray/blue eyes. But then offspring inherits thouse genes and gets brown as it should.
Also, Blue eyes are a recessive trait and brown eyes are dominant.

12:01 for those who don't know about this, This is very common in our area to lace strings with glass, as it make it easier to give small weight, but the biggest help it provide is glass laced string helps to cut down rival/ competitor's Kite, as you see them in Kite festival or in our case "shakrain festival" !!

About the blue eyes thing, it _is_ possible for two blue eyes to yield a brown eyed person. This can happen when one of the parents has a brown allele that failed to "activate," or simply due to a mutation. It's extremely rare, but not outright impossible. Only about 60 of Bb people have brown eyes, which means that either that brown allele isn't as dominant as we once thought, or that it has a pretty high likelihood of failing to express itself.
It could also be that both parents had Bb and the person ended up being bb having brown eyes. It would simply mean that at least one grandparent from either side had the recessive b gene. It's entirely possible.
Could the opposite be true? 2 brown eyes making a blue/greyish eye colour, that's what happened to my niece, now she and I have the same eye colour, standing out from the rest of the family.

The glass embedded kite strings were likely done for kite fighting. Two or more people fly kites and try to knock the others out of the air of cut their lines. A bunch of people getting hit by the lines and getting fatally cut is crazy.

Basically 1/3 of the kites in Brazil have glass in the string, it is meant to cut the other kite string easier but has that side effect
Cutting other people's kites was a thing when I was young and everyone used to do it in Sri Lanka.
I've never heard murder referred to as a side effect before, but I guess there's a first time for everything!

We use glue and crushed up glass dust on your kite strings as that makes it easier to cut other kite strings and also makes our string more sturdier in a kite battle. You gotta make sure that any string isn't left outside after it gets cut cause it can easily cut through skin....
Sounds like someone at that kite festival read the book " the kite runner" I think. Loosely remember that the kite battles were determined by who was able to cut the other persons kite string, they would put different materials on the string to cheat and cut other peoples kite strings more easily. Only you know, this person decided it was a day for murder instead of Kite games.

The kite strings laced with glass are used to do kite fighting. The basics are that you want to cut the other persons kite string, so they just made the strings abrasive. This is also why motorcyclists in some areas that practice this have a vertical pole directly in front of them. It blocks the strings so they don't get their throats cut.
