Gatwick Express Class 442, Gatwick Airport non stop to London Victoria, Drivers eye view.
The vibrations cause the audio to sound a bit strange when moving at speed. Apologies for that.

I was in my 50s when I went to England, stay in Horley, for two weeks every day I went to London Victoria on the train. I made a video while leaving London Victoria all the way to Horley while the train was moving. To this day I still play it. When I came back home from England, everyday I used to imitate the voice on the train. We are now approaching Clapham Junction and the one that says please mind the gap between the train and the platform. Looking at these videos I relive the time I spent for the two weeks. I just love it.

Myself and another driver were released from driving duties back in the eighties as cameraman and recordist and were seconded to a film company to make route and other railway training films under a remit from the then BRB. We had an old directors saloon coach at our disposal of around 1935 vintage which was propelled by a diesel loco for the route stuff. A lot of the films are on youtube and although the films look a little dated now are worth watching for some of the archive content.

+isdraken Productions .Sweden (isdraken) Yes it works surprisingly well but I always thought how dangerous it is for wild animals & stray humans (750 V DC). It would be very expensive to change to overhead & problematic in the low tunnels so it it will probably never change or not in the forseeable future. The class 442 has a design top cruising speed of 100 MPH & ultimate top speed of around 115 MPH I believe. I don't know what the line speed between Gatwick & London is (probably 90 MPH).
Most interesting for me was the old Gatwick Express that had a permament formation of an electric locomotive at one end (class 73 with stand by Diesel engine which was useful when traversing large gaps in the conductor rail e.g at points / crossings), a rake of unpowered BR mark 2 air conditioned coaches (second hand from elsehwere in the country) and a powered GLV at the other end (class 489 itself converted from the motor coach of the class 414 EMU - Electric Multiple Unit).
The configuration was a good example of how British Rail used to do a good job with very little money before privatisation.

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_489
Remember also that Eurostar worked on 3rd rail when it at first used to come into London Waterloo.
