    About me:
    My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician & songwriter.
    My channel is these things:
    1. A place to share my songs - via various 'Back on Track' video series - in which you'll see each song idea evolve step-by-step, with me (hopefully!) improving my song-writing skills as we go.
    2. An outlet for me to discuss all things musical - including technical break-downs of software and tools that I use, as well as more wide-ranging discussions of topics that interest me.
    I play the guitar (electric, acoustic, and bass), and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
    All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase.
    I try very hard to make my videos PRACTICAL and no-nonsense - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about.

    What a brilliant teacher. I was not sure about buying Halion as it looked very complicated and I was not sure my 77 year old brain would get to grips with it. However, your excellent calm, detailed explanation and general teaching skills have made me realise that I will enjoy learning and using Halion and produce my own sounds for new compositions. Thanks very much, Anthony.

    A huge thanks for you sir! It all started with me wanted to sample my drum machine to free up some inputs on my AD converter and to keep the kits virtual in cubase. First I looked at Groove Agent but was sort of dissapointed over it could only handle 24bit audio. So after remembering having a Halion 3 license that was able to upgrade to 7 I went for that option to be able to sample in 32bit float. And you can imagen how suprised I was from having years of break from Halion 3 and entering 7. It's like an own audio workstation and not just a VST anymore :D

    Halion is a really powerful and fast way to make layered sounds, and I find that starting from presets and altering their modulation, filtering, layers and internal program tree structures, is incredibly powerful. The only other synths that come close to this one are MSoundFactory (which is not very fun to use, frankly) and Falcon (which is almost as powerful, and arguably better UI, but less powerful). I would also like to give Steinberg credit for building up an incredibly vast set of presets and content for Halion.

    Hi Anthony, I have watched lots of your videos and they are very useful in understanding lots of things!!! Just a quick question: I have bought, registered, activated and downloaded Halion 7. Why then when I try to load Halion 7, I only get the option to load Halion SE3. I load it in however and then the instrument name in top left is Halion Sonic 7, not Halion 7 as in your video? I still have access to all the Halion 7 instruments such as FM lab etc. However the 'load', 'programme', 'media bay' &' browser' don't show up as in your video?These are the options above the 'factory' and 'user' on the top right. (I was trying to go through the steps in this video, I loaded 3 oscillator lead OK but cant access the prg tree) Not sure you can answer this one TBH as it may be something to do with my system specifically. I have downloaded Halion 7 more than once as I thought that may help, but no joy! Thanks

      Are you running it inside Cubase? If so, have a look in your Studio\VST Plugin Manager\Instruments tab to make sure it's visible. Another place to look is in the Steinberg Library Manager to confirm that it's properly installed

However that's ok as I can access it in Cubase now I'll be able to follow the steps you go through in this video now. Thanks so much.

    Your tutorials are great, and in this one you show the power of Halion 7.
    However, I find it hard to believe that in order to use a piano sound, or a bass, or a saxophone, I have to study every single detail of all the things you can do with every sound.
    I am 12 minutes into the video, and I have no idea where to look for an instrument.
    Would it be too much to ask for a dumbed down version, so that I can use and instrument as it comes, prepackaged, and later one, learn to do all the possible wonders to each sound?

    • @OneManAndHisSongs
      @OneManAndHisSongs  Před 5 dny

      That's a perfectly reasonable request. I must admit it hadn't occurred to me (inexplicably) to make a single-serving, basic introduction video for Halion, and I certainly should. I'll add it to my to-do list.

    Hello, in the DRUMKIT area. in Halion 6 many drumkits cannot be modified, when you open the mapping page the samples are not visible, why? Furthermore, it is possible to access the factory-proprietary sample libraries in order to create a customizable mapping. I hope that with Halion 7 we can do it. Thank you

    • @OneManAndHisSongs
      @OneManAndHisSongs  Před 8 měsíci

      It depends upon the Macro. Many Halion presets are "black-boxed", meaning that some or all of their sound make-up is hidden. That's a design decision that lies with the preset/macro designers. If you wanted to created a sample library from "hidden" Halion content, you can always record the notes in Cubase then render them (freezing works too). That will create raw audio in your project folder over which you have complete control, but obviously at that point you're not really inside Halion at all.

    Wow, the most powerful? I know you're a master of Omnisphere, so I'm paying attention now. I do have Falcon as well, and it does look a bit similar to Halion. But I find that with all that power their UI can be intimidating as hell, which is why I've gelled so much with Omnisphere, as it's powerful, but compared with Halion and Falcon, seems like a simple synth! :-)

    Am I supposed to feel way in over my head when you start talking about oscillators and trees? Does everything start to make sense later in the series?
    I assume many other people are like me, and don't find it useful to be given a verbal description of the software with jargon.
    I think a much more effective technique is to start making a song and say out loud step by step why you are clicking each thing you are clicking. Thx for this superb tutorial series. I have two questions: 1. Having Cubase artist, what from Halion do Iget in the package? Is there a description of all the content? Is Tales part of the package? And 2.) How do Cubase and Halion interact. Here is a vido from e about the problem: czcams.com/video/m7oTko1aEAw/video.html

      Different versions of Cubase come with different bundles, so I can't answer your first question. there will be comparison charts that tell you what you need to know though. As for the second question you've loaded a PROGRAM called Acoustic Grand Piano, which pre-loads all the channels of your Sonic Instance, but from that point onwards you've overwritten the instrument in Slot 16 with a different instrument. It's like loading a MIDI song into Cubase then changing one of the instruments. It's still the same song, just with a different instrument on one track.

      You're welcome. I've made a couple of Cubase tutorial series - the Cubase Fundamentals series is the latest one. I'm in the process of making "one-shot" videos on V13, but that only started fairly recently. I've also made an "Essential MDII" series that goes into quite some depth on that subject. Check out the playlists from my channel home page and you'll find everything neatly sorted :)

    Sombody, please, before i start screaming and never stop...I'm pretty fluent in all things Mac, all things that connect to and use Mac...but either I'm just being a complete idiot or somebody''s not being clear...do I need to even have GB running to use this? I understand a "stand alone" program as one that can be used independently of anything else. No matter what I do, I cannot get sound to produce from this program. Not independently, not w GB running, not through my MIDI keyboard....WHAAAA???????

      I have no experience of either Macs or (presumably?) Garage Band, but Halion is definitely standalone-capable and doesn't need anything else running to function. It sounds like a config issue - something with your audio interface, presumably, but impossible to trace without knowing your system setup. Steinberg Customer Support is slow, but they do eventually respond if you can bear the delay.

    HALion 7 is insanely complicated to use. It's not intuitive at all and 95% of clicks don't do anything I expected or hoped for them to do. Isn't making music supposed to be fun? Steinberg really should improve their software, and make better tutorials as well!

      Completely agree. Came here to see if I wanted to upgrade from Halion 6. A VST I never ended up using. Watching this video, confirms why I don’t. I don’t have time for this. I do appreciate his work with this tutorial however.

      What synth do you prefer? I’ve tried pretty much all major synths and Halion looks powerful, easy no, but powerful yes.
