  • ‪@steinberg‬ takes us into the past, present, and future of FM synthesis with the new FM Lab for HALion 7. FM LAB gives you all the tools you need to create compelling new textures and instruments.
    • Algorithm designer
    Freely design your own FM algorithms from the ground up. Each operator can modulate any other operator and itself, allowing for feed-forward and backward configurations. Connections are easily established by setting the gain of the junction. Carriers can be panned and all your custom algorithms can be stored as sub-presets.
    • Find your favorite algorithm
    The Algorithm Finder is loaded with all the algorithms from Yamaha’s legendary DX7, TX81Z, and modern FM-X synth engine. Browse through the algorithms using the icons or use the number of serial and parallel operators to narrow down the search for the perfect starting point.
    • Multistage envelopes
    The pitch, filter, and amp envelopes of FM Lab are completely customizable. You can easily draw envelopes and paint the shapes you want with the pen or brush tools, making the creation of vibrant, tempo-synced rhythmic shapes straightforward. Design your own or combine up to 48 of the most useful shapes as a starting point. The all-new Shaper mode for envelopes cycles through your drawn multistage envelopes, keeping them perfectly synced to the host tempo.

    Sounds good, Simeon. Seems like Steinberg has a winner with FM Lab. Despite all the craziness going on in the world, it's still a good time to be alive.

    Thank you , i had H6 but only used the presets as FM synthesis was scary and intimidating. After H7 came out i upgraded and the revamped interface and new VSTs esp FM Lab sold me. Your video helped me to begin to understand and learn more .This VST is powerful (especially having been a teen in the 80s and grew up on the DX7 songs)

    When these sounds are RE-CREATED by the OEM Synth Engineers from Yamaha itself, through the Steinberg HALion virtual synthesizer, using the organic material from the original synths that articulated these sounds 40 years ago . . . the RESULTS are PHENOMENAL ! Noooooooone of the other emulators are doing the RIGHT thing when it comes to rendering these sounds. The emulators mess up big time by fidgetting too much with the operator knobs too early and almost ALL of them (emulators = Arturia, Ni FM8, Plogue OPS7, Dexed, etc, etc) . . . as SOON as you test the way they programmed these operators across the ENTIRE breadth of the 88 key keyboard . . . u realize that their sounds are DISTORTED in several ranges of the keybed. Only Yamaha PAYS ATTENTION to the issue of HOW these 6 opeators SHOULD be BALANCED to prevent noticeable distortion especially in the extreme RANGES (high octave or LOW octave) of the keybed WITHOUTTT introducing distortion 😍😍🥰. The emulators get it COMPLETELY wrong when it comes to reproducing the FM sound at LOWER ranges of the keybed 😆😆😆😁😁 They DONT do what HALion does !

I added some index markers to make it easier to get to navigate through the sounds but agree that there is so much still to discover, especially the newer presets the amazing sound designers put together, so stay tuned. • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Před rokem +1

      It should be the EPiano 1 patch. This was the sound that was used on so many iconic recordings when the DX7 was first introduced. I revisit it later in the video, applying different effects and such. FM Lab really gives you a lot of opportunity to take these classic sounds further. Thanks so much for watching. Joyfully!

    TX and DX are all well and good but the real question is:
    Since it includes all the FM -X algorithms , how do we import some Montage/ Modx patches?

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Před rokem +1

      With the FM-X Presets, especially with the Montage there are some differences that the hardware introduces that creates some difficulty with them working 1:1 inside of HALion. Here is a response from one of the developers that provides some insight into this:

      Thanks for watching.

    • @MrPsanterIsBack
      @MrPsanterIsBack Před rokem +1

      @@PraiseTracks Thanks for sharing their feedback.
      So as it is, it means that the FMX algorithms exist in Halion but are almost completely useless in their current implementation. It's like Steinberg did only half of the job and stopped in the middle of it. Nonetheless, it makes sense that Yamaha wouldn't allow Steinberg to make a 1:1 copy of their $3,000 current flagship. Even if this was possible.

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Here is what I heard from Mattias who helped develop FM LAB:
      "FM Lab doesn’t have a Unison mode. Some presets use multiple detuned Layers to achieve a richer sound. Alternatively, you could load a Program multiple times, then go to Edit > Program and detune each Program as you wish. This also gives you a richer sound."
      I hope that helps and thanks again for watching.
