      I used to work at the gap as an assistant, and we were told not to restrain shoplifters.
      Now you have to see this from the owner and employees POV, as a worker, you get minimum wage to sell items which can take all week to earn, you want us to risk our job, health and or life because someone lifted a pack of $50 boxers? Not gonna happen.
      The owner can't or shouldn't do anything because the shoplifter is waiting for a huge payout.
      So they hired a 3rd party security company, which even still there's laws against them stopping a thief, like if they steal items for babies, or if it's a woman (although that may have changed in recent years, equality)

    In Crime & Punishment, it's been studied numerous times & found that, it Doesn't Matter what the punishment for a specific crime is, whether it's a warning, a fine, a custodial sentence, or even a Death penalty. Increasing punishments never deters a crime. The deterrent comes from whether it's likely, unlikely, or certain, that there Will be a punishment for any potential crime. So, for example, increasing the punishment for a crime from 25-Life, up to potential Death penalty will deter nothing, what will be a deterrent is if a perpetrator knows 100% there absolutely Will be consequences to their actions, large or small, if it's certain it'll happen, Then that's a deterrent. It is in essence very simple & straightforward, but politicians & policymakers never want to expend the required resources to ensure this happens, because they're concerned with the backlash of public opinion on the needed costs to implementation.

    • @nationalsniper5413
      @nationalsniper5413 Před 8 dny

      A higher punishment keeps someone longer of the street. And when back out will think twice before doing it again. The longer he is off the street the saver the street is. It is not just to punish the criminal, but also to protect the citizens and say to the victim that what is done to him is taken seriously and prevent them from taking the law into their own hands (which will happen eventually).
      It is not just high punishment or high chance of getting punishment, it is both, the chances of consequences should be high, but if the punishment for mur der is like just a fine it is useless (bit exaggerated but you get the point). For murder punishment should be life. You take a life, you lose your life. And I am talking here about murder in which someone was deliberately out to kill someone. Then there is a 0% of this person doing this again.
      For some gangs having served time in prison gives members a higher status, so they don't care about a high chance of punishment if the punishment is to low.

    • @nationalsniper5413
      @nationalsniper5413 Před 8 dny

      A high punishment is not very useful without a high change of actually getting the punishment (you do have a partial point here), but a high chance of punishment is useless without a punishment high enough to keep them off the street for a while.
      Another thing is that people that repeat crimes should have punishments raised each time by a certain percentage (apart from mur der of course, that is end of story and you should be locked up forever). So if you shoplift the first time for something small: people can make a mistake and you could get a relatively mild punishment (like a big fine and paying for the damages), but if you do it a second time it is jail time, third time longer jail time. And if you keep on committing crime you have proven you have given away rights to walk the streets anymore.
      Another deterrent is to have people be allowed to defend themselves and their property.

    as a security guard, i dont take high end retail job, but i have taken a few. Most security jobs pay near minimal wage. Guards arent trained to take down people. The main use of a guard is basically so criminals can look at a store with a guard and say "oh they have security, lets not hit this store." but it's well known among criminals that the security arent going to do anything. Also we are told not to intervene. Just observe and report. Also security guards are viewed as disposable ponds, easy to get rid of, call the company, send me another guard. Only thing security companies care about is getting a body on a post, and they pocket most of the money from the contract. Also anyone can get a security license so long as you have like 200$, its on ly a 3 day training.

    I quit a CVS near Times Square partially because the shoplifting was insane. I was a manager so people used to always ask why we had everything in the store locked up, and I would tell them it's because local laws give more power to the criminals, pretty much everyone agreed it was a shame when I told them that. A manager who trained me, older lady in her 60's, probably 100 lbs., was fired after a shoplifter she confronted slapped her in the face twice and she retaliated by kicking him in the leg on his way out the door, I learned very quickly the not even the company would protect it's employees. Theft in general is just rampant in NYC, largely because the consequences for getting caught are a slap on the wrist. Glad I got out.

    Quite a few years back there was a town in California where people rioted, stole from businesses and destroyed the stores.
    After that, none of the businesses returned leaving a dead zone. Residents started complaining that they couldn't do any shopping and had to travel 10 miles to the nearest grocery store.
    Same thing happened in San Francisco. The court system and law enforcement were overwhelmed by all the shoplifters. So the governor passed a law that people could steal up to $999.99 and it would just be a misdemeanor. No big deal. So businesses started bailing and closing.
    Throwing $45 million at the problem isn't going to solve anything.
    The problem is societal breakdown.
    Morals, ethics, common decency no longer exist.

      The governor did not pass that law governor Newsom that is. I’m not sure who thought up this ballot measure, but it was actually called the safe Street and schools act. It was numbered proposition 47 it allowed up to $900 of merchandise to be stolen and classified as a misdemeanor, from what I hear, George Soros and his tribe put in liberal DAs all over our country. These liberal DAs will no longer prosecute misdemeanor crime, since they are more concerned with the color of the person skin who are doing these crimes and the color of the people in the majority in prison, therefore what we have is crime out of control and I myself no longer feel safe and the business I am in in a big city is no longer profitable or safe. We did not vote for proposition 47 as we read the ballot measures before we vote on them, they are considering trying to rework this ballot measure and actively gaining signatures. At the time. It was the population of the state in the majority that actually voted for proposition 47. That is very sad to think that people could be so ignorant I had sign in the windows of my building, where the tenants said, defund the police, I said to one of them who you gonna call when your car is broken into. In our town the citizens cannot even get all the cars that are on the street in front of their house hauled away, they are calling these, Cars Abandoned. The truth is these are not abandoned. These are stolen and in our town we have one of the highest theft rates of cars anywhere and we see it every day, I’m not sure how we are going to get ourselves out of this mess unless we start putting the criminals in prison and jail again. I have talked to some of the people who support the criminals and they think we can rehabilitate them and too many people are in prison, this video shows us exactly what happens when you were do not put criminals in prison. God help us all.

      Jail is housing that comes with its own food and expensive security system. It'd be cheaper to give everybody in the city a UBI than it would be to throw them in jail, with a lot of theft being out of need to survive, you'd find that the amount of theft decreases better with less money spent.
      Fact is people that want to throw thieves in jail never account for the costs associated with doing so, which is why most places won't do it.

    I'm in Canada & just the other day my son & his friend went to get lunch at a grocery store deli, they were followed in the store. At the checkout the female security guard told the cashier to check out their pockets.. I would of loved to see the dumb look on her face when they had nothing.. I understand that they're teens. While adults walk out w/hundreds of dollars of high end items..

      This isn't news, it's just late-stage capitalism. Anyone that can't connect the dots between an economic system that is squeezing people for everything they have just to pay rent and being reduced to stealing toothpaste is a clown. Crime increases as wealth inequality increases. If you want to get rid of the crime, you have to get rid of the wealth inequality. I have no patience for people pearl-clutching over people stealing to survive. That position is either ignorant or incredibly privileged, or both. And I don't feel sorry for billion-dollar corporations losing money on it either. If they want stealing to stop, they should charge better prices.

      Can confirm. I can't TELL you how much stolen stuff you'll find at a flea market or "pick a bin / resale / damaged goods" place. Diapers, bags, deodorant, OTC medicines....even unused tires at one or two places. I can't tell you the amount of Wal-mart and Target-branded shoes.

      Yes people were very tolerant and apathetic when they decided to kick prayer, the Bible and God out of public schools and now decades later the bitter fruit of godlessness is rearing its ugly head... if things keep on going the way they are without repentance, it won't be long before the West descends into Mad Max madness.
