  • Leaving the hotel in Kesennuma, pushing thru and over the hills. Sticking on the sidewalk, Utatsu tsunami damage, coming to terms with the past and the tragedy of what happened in the tsunami. Putting things into perspective. More roadside charity. Minimisanriku.

I remember that day. Teaching my senior students when everything happened 😔 Thank you for showing the progress of the towns. Though I made it out. I know that not many did... I am happy to see them rebuilding. You've given me the closure that nothing else has done. Thank you Matt. Thank you.

Thank you for your report, Matt. Ohkawa Elementary school got tsunami and 74 students and 13 faculties are killed by it. The school was about 5km from Ocean, but tsunami reached that far and nobody couldn't expect the tragedy at the moment. It was worst tragedy under the school management ever in Japan.

I'm glad you included the drone footage. I don't see that using footage of places where disaster struck and many lives were lost is disrespectful. Especially when done with reverence a with this video. Most memories are lost in the immediate years after something like this happens. With the scale of this disaster the memories of the 84 people who lost their lives could easily be forgotten button the few people like you who preserve it.

First of all, this type of vlog is so freaking awesome. I live in Chiba Prefecture and shortly after you made this video, I took a trip to the tsunami areas going all the way up to Rikuzentakata down to Kesennuma to Minamisanriku to Ishinomaki. I've been to Okawa Elementary School and the coastal area of the city. Onagawa totally slipped my mind and I curse myself for it. Although at the time, I didn't know this channel existed. I've subscribed now. What I do want to say is the town of Minamisanriku has it's own, for lack of a better term, lore regarding the tsunami. The remains of a building, the red steel beams, is where 40 some people sought shelter on the rooftop and only 11 survived. One girl that worked there, Miki Endo, was the voice behind the tsunami warning. She stayed at her post to warn residents to stay away and get to safety and she sacrificed herself to do it. When you crossed the bridge over the Kitakami River I instantly recognized where you were. It was interesting you made the comment about the students going up into the hill behind the school. 1 teacher wanted to do that while the others wanted to cross the same bridge you did and go into those mountains. Anyway, great video and now I have a place to check out when I visit Onagawa.

To anyone who wishes to learn the unimaginable tragedy of the Okawa Elementary School, I highly encourage reading Richard Lloyd Parry's "Ghosts of the Tsunami: Life and Death in Japan's Disaster Zone." Surprisingly, this awful event was, in fact, not repeated at any other elementary school in Japan. Seeing the hill behind the school brings home the awful reality of what might have been, had responsible adults listened to more wiser children. Parry's dramatic account takes the reader through the entire event, minute-by-minute, and provides detailed insight into the Japanese family spirit and their stoic bravery through the tragic events of the Tohuku Earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011.

Here is a link to the tragedy that happened at the school. czcams.com/video/SRP71UiZMzQ/video.html -- Because the evacuation plan was unclear, most of the teachers and students gathered at the bridge after the earthquake hit. Reports from eyewitnesses said that during the first phase of the tsunami the areas around the bridge started to get flooded, cuting off their escape to higher ground. They never had a chance once the second set of waves from the tsunami came in.

Ever thought about releasing some kind of highlight reels, which are like 30 minutes long and present each country you travelled in a more compact form? They could be like little documentaries about the people you meet on the way and the interesting places you come by, like in this vlog. They would probably reach a bigger audience and such emotional highlights like this vlog wouldn't be hidden beetween hundrets of episodes of you riding (which I personally love, but may not be for everyone)
