  • Lisanne M. D. Pattynama & Wietse J. Eshuis on "Endoscopic vacuum therapy for anastomotic leakage after upper gastrointestinal surgery"
A total of 38 patients treated with endoscopic vacuum therapy (EVT) for anastomotic leakage after esophagectomy or total gastrectomy were reviewed in this retrospective study, with 74% being successfully managed. EVT was however found to be labor-intensive, with a median of six procedures required over a mean duration of 33 days. Future studies should focus on refining the EVT technique, including the use of intraluminal vs. intracavity EVT and the frequency of sponge exchange.
